I have a zantedescia (sorry if spelt wrong) which is flowering for the first time (third year). Got loads of flowers. This is probably a stupid question but if I cut the flowers will I get more?
Good question Justy ,I've just chopped off the whole flowering stalk but it was hugely thick like ruhbarb and didn't seem like something I should have "chopped through",did I do bad? :-[
You can use arums for cut flowers, so it's not bad to cut them :D However, I have my doubts whether cutting will encourage new flower heads to grow (I think flower production is actually linked to size and age of plant, etc...) , but maybe someone else with more experience can answer more definitively.
I've had Arums for about 6 years. I dead head when they've finished, but as yet, I've never had a second flush!!! Well, not with arums........! :o Lottie
:) I have arums they are lovely but I have never had more flowers because of dead heading :( The older the clump the more flowers is my experience :) I cut the dead heads of just below the top of the leaves first then tidy the stalk up later as sometimes new growth comes on the side of old stems :) feed well while flowering I use tom feed :)
Agree with Marley Farley - I never got extra flowers either! But they do love a lot of water so watering well might help.
;D Yep they are very thirsty plants water well I do ::) it's a bind but worth it ;D
yayyy noticed today I've another three blooms coming ;D
;D ;D ;D Great ;D ;D ;D
Showing off, I know and I'm sure other members have better examples, but had to post pic!! They looking lovely, won't last much longer, and promised Marley to keep practising!! Lottie ;D

They look wonderful Lottie. ;D
Mine are just opening after I repotted mine.
Think they're beautiful plants, Arums, couldn't possibly pick and put in vase!! Lottie ;D
;D Those are lovely ;D ;D ;D ;D Maybe you don't need to practice quite so much now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D My arums are just coming to an end I think, they flowered early this year ;D :'( :'( :'(
Think you being very supportive!! However, I was lucky that the pic was already the right way up! Who knows what the end result may have been!! Hubbie hid camera since I posted his pic....... Had to be done!! Lottie
;D Haven't seen the pic of the OH where is it ??? ;D
In the Shed!!!! Only place for it!!!!! Got camera back now, watch this space.... Lottie ;D ;D Titled "Distraction? Cos not Darling..."
;D ;D ;D Gotcha, My life is so peaceful now, but when the grandkids come over the house is alive, sometimes think ww3 is breaking out if all here. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
How many grankids so you have!!!!! Lottie ;D ;D ;D
;D ;D ;D 6 ;D ;D ;D
A smile for each! Excellent!! Lottie
;D And I really couldn't be without them, they are the light of my life ;D ;D even on the bad days ;D ;D ;D(http://nucite.net/isWext.php/3842/76044.jpg) These are the three youngest last Xmas, it's impossible to get them all to sit for a pic!!!!!!! The other three are much older & would not have their pics on here. They are adults now ::) ??? ;D
They're lovely, Marley!! And they look really happy children. Chip of the old block? ;D Lottie
;D I know I'm biased, but I adore them & yes they are a very happy bunch, the adult lot are different now though, much more serious, but I'm sure that phase will pass ;D ;D
Adults need to enter the phase of "middle youth"!!! I'm in it, great fun!! Going back to being a bit of a twerp, pleasing myself and the odd bit of irresponsibility.....!!! ;D ;D ;D Lottie
Getting back to arums, you do not cut them but pull them like rhubarb, and if you see yellow leaves, leave them, they are putting goodness back into the plant.
Gorgeous, but remind me of weddings and funerals! My great nan had them in her wedding bouquet and my dad had them in his funeral flowers!
;D Lottie The OH says I go to pieces when in company of the young grandkids, Don't hear or see anything else when with them ;D Think there may be a little green head peeping up there ;D ;D And EJ as you say back to Arums, yes they do remind me of weddins & funerals, but they are such beautiful flowers, and heritage I only cut off the dead head just below the leaves to get rid of the unsightly bit & the rest of it is then left to die back. ;D
Lol!! Think you've answered all queries outstanding!!! I just cut the dead heads off mine too, then give it a really good mulch with homemade compost. Lottie ;D ;D ;D
;D Bet they think their luck's in then ;D ;D
Decided they quite snooty plants that expect this sort of treatment or else....!! Snobs of the plant world, but well worth the pampering. Lottie ;D
;D Absolutely ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I can declare that my Arums are now officially finished :'( :'( :'(, but what a show!! Now start pampering for next year...... Lottie ;D
::) Yes mine have finally finished too. :'( :'( I am busy feeding mine up for next year. ;D I have a crinum Powellii that I inherited a few years ago now, I didn't know what it was until recently. I have planted it out this year, so have my finger crossed it will flower next year, although I have since been told that I will be very lucky as they don't like to be messed about with. It has lots of babies too, so although I have not had it in flower it can't have been too stressed. Lets hope it settles in to new home. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/1530/ You can see what they should look like here. ;D
Beautiful, Marley! If you happent o have too many babies........ ;) Lottie
My kiwi blush has not done thing, but I do not think it is really as hardy as they say, the green goddess is really thriving in the shallow end of the pond, also I have just treated myself to a new one called pink kiss, knocked down from £15 to a tenner, can't wait to see the flower as it is supposed to be a late one.
;D ;D Sure thing lottie if I can get a baby off & maybe rooted for you I will, how does that sound? You will probably have to wait a year or so before it flowers as the babies are quite small only about 7" or so, but I will try & get one sorted later, I will let you know when sending it. ;D ;D
;D Sounds like you have a beauty to come there heritage :) post a picture when it flowers. ;D
Yes please, Marley!! Have pmed you my address, and I'll sort out seeds as sson as dry!!! Thanks. Lottie
:) Morning Lottie, yes have your details, will post seeds off when I have them. :) :)
Got yours too!! Wonder who will win seed swappng race??? Honesty has now formed seeds, just waiting for them to dry. Lottie ;D ;D ;D
:) Will see about the lily, if the weather will lets me this week. Not sure if there will be roots or not. So will let you know when I get the baby out so to speak, then I will be able to let you know the ETA. ;D ;D By the way do you like agapanthus? ;D ;D
