Title: Goldfinch
Post by: Ceri on June 03, 2005, 13:47:54
I've just seen a pair of Goldfinches in my front garden - never seen one before in my life!!  They were busy eating dandelion seedheads - I'm so glad I didn't get all the dandelions out in time!!  I had to get my bird book out to work out what they were (I don't know much about birds as you can tell!)  they are so colourful and exotic looking.  I'm more used to starlings and housesparrows frequenting the bird table in the back garden.

Come to Lincolnshire - we have thousands of them all over the place.  We didn't 25 years ago when I was a child - I never saw one and they were my favourite bird, but they seem to be really on the rise.

We have loads of chaffinches here as well.

PS Lincolnshire is the best place for seeing Barn Owls and Sparrows, but not much else.

PPS I have a very small terraced garden and two cats.  Since getting rid of the cat flap, we have managed to encourage House Sparows, Blue Tits, Robins and Black Birds into the garden - we used to just have the sparrows despite the garden being an insect, green stuff and seed paradise.  I am looking the extend my range and the Goldfinches that live just down the road and any local chaffinches will be most welcome - pleeeease!
