Title: Double Aquilegia
Post by: Palustris on June 01, 2005, 10:56:25

I picked these from round the garden last night. Not bad considering we have never actually planted any double aquilegias to my knowledge. The only downside is that the flowers are not that big, say 2cms across at the most. Don't know if they come true from seed, most Aquilegias do not.

Rather keen on that bright blue one Eric.  I have found 2 doubles in my garden but both matching deep purple.

It is almost like a pompom, is it not. There is also a similar shaped white one where the edges of the petals are pink! I found that one today.

The very dark one is quite similar to my "Black Barlow" and very pretty it is too

lovely!

Could they have cross polinated and self seeded themselves? If they keep doing that you'll have an amazing collection soon.

Started out 8 years ago with a packet of Mckana hybrids and lots of species( wild collected seed too). Now they are all self seeded, all over the place. All we do is pull out the ones in the wrong place and leave the rest to do their own thang! The flowers on the non-double ones are now getting smaller and mostly washed out pink, so before long we will have to start some more big flowered ones. Have got, just starting some seed grown ones from Mellow Yellow and they look to be big and a good yellow too.
