Quarter them, remove the seeds, give 'em a quick rinse, and pack them in a clean jar topped with white vinegar. Put a lid on it, and stick it in the fridge for a week. After a week, eat one, blow the back of your head off, and put them back for  another week before you try again ;).

They are really nice done like this, they lose some of their heat, but still pack a punch.

I got this recipe from a guy we met in our casa in Cuba. He used a slightly milder chilli, and I couldn't stop eating them. Yumyumyumyumyum ;D
Nothing rhymes with orange...

Just cannot think why people want to die young!! DP's idea, or roast Chillies Rellenos, stuffed with strong cheddar, I accept with a mild vehicle like Anaheims.

But, as often said, cool the the Habeneros by spicing cooking sherry with them?

swainclubber

thanks for the interesting ideas!

I'm in the same boat, Swainclubber.  This is one plant - I have 3.  Last year's harvest still in freezer.  Resolution: not to grow habs next year.

Mmm, sounds like my idea of heaven.
Pickled or served with sherry, both sound appealing, as does the cream cheese.

Needless to say, I like the hottest curries the restaurant can prepare ... with raw chillies as a garnish ...

You got shares in Gaviscon?  ;D

Here's one of mine Tim.  Grown from 'Habanero' seed supplied by the Organic Gardening Catalogue.  d**n hot they are too!  Hope the piccie's sharp enough - my camera's too basic for good close ups.

swainclubber

cool..mine are big, but a few are like small malteser size..very strange

tim

Jill - lovely picture.

Don't know much beyond Jalepenos - just saw this on the net.

Ta, Tim.  :)  Reckon the close up view they have is either of a stunted one (habs do vary quite considerably in length and breadth) or the picture has somehow been squished.  The photo underneath on that website looks more like the ones growing on my plants.

BTW I don't really want to die young (or rather while my boys are still young) and I'd like to use up some of my hab build up, so what's the trick with the sherry?????

tim

Just for fun, Jill - I don't grow them, because I like to taste my lovingly prepared food - here's another version.

Sherry? Just chuck half a dozen smallish ones into a cheap sherry & brew a month or so for spiking almost any dish.

Jill

Right, off to buy cheap sherry - sounds wicked ;D  I like to taste my food too so won't be growing these again!

Just googled and found this http://www.chilefarm.co.uk/seeds3.html
Mine look much like the Golden Habaneros pictured.

1, And I like to taste my chillies!

2. Habs? Yes - all wiggly & bumpy?

We have a massive glut of chillis now.
Some "habanero", some small thin "heat wave" and some big "hungarian hot wax"
Any ideas of what to do with them.
Is the best way of pickling them with white vinegar? or should I try brine or alcohol?
The sherry and chilli is that a drink???
We typically stuff the hungarian ones, but would love suggestions for new stuffings or any recipes that uses or preserves lots of chillis!!!
Is freezing them an option?

Sherry and chilli is used to add to soups and stews for flavour. Where my OH comes from they have fish chowder with sherry peppers!

Freezing is a good option for chillis, and lots of peeps on here dry them sucessfully, I never grow enough to dry so have never tried!

Chilli sauce is good too, there is a recipe either on here or on R4All I posted last year.

Or EJ's chilli Jelly.

This may help you   http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/yabbse/index.php/topic,4759.0.html

Yes, you can freeze them.  I spread them on a tray and bag when frozen.  Trouble is I've still got a large bag over from last year and most of this year's habanero crop still to harvest.  EJ's chilli jelly here I come.
