What size of greenhouse do you have?
« on: August 22, 2010, 15:45:13 »
I was looking around a place selling greenhouses yesterday (spending imaginary funds on my dream greenhouse! ;D), and it got me wondering what was the average/most common greenhouse size amongst amateur gardeners.

I personally have a 6' by 6' structure that i am currently finding a bit small for my needs and am wishing (as we all do) that i had a bigger one.

I have a 8x6, ans so do 2 other plot holders, 1 plotholder has a 6x6.
I find my greenhouse too small, but don't know how big would be big enough, as I will always want a bit more.....

I have an;

8' x 6'     10' x8'   12' x8' and a 28' x 8' from these I would reccommend the 12' x 8' as it is more versatile.

Only the 10' x 8' is heated as this is at home and it is the one I do all my propagating in.

A lot depends upon what you plan on growing in it! I grow very little in my 10' x 8'

I have a 6x8 and now wish I had a bigger greenhouse :'(
My brother-in-law told me to get bigger and I had to admit to him that I wished I had taken his advice. I dont have enough room for everthing I want to grow. I wish I had two one for propagating and one for growing my toms and cukes etc.
Get as big as you can afford and as big as you have the space !! :)

6 x 8ft   at home
6 x 8ft   at plot 1
6 x 8ft   at plot 2
6 x 12ft also at plot 2

They all get filled too, though the larger one is predominantly for seedlings and potting on.  Although I do put a few extra sweet pepper plants in there.

I totaly agree duke, i could do with a gh for propagation and one for growing. Trying to do both in one small gh is tricky to say the least.

I've got..
1x  6x8
1x  8x10
1x  8x20
1x  10x20 tunnel
...and some how you never have enough room for those few more things that you want to grow..and yet you always manage to squeeze another 'new' tomato..to try ::) ;D

Hi
For years i had greenhouse envy and had a small fleet of mini greenhouses each one could take 2 tomatoes or 4 chillies!  they did really well becuase each one had different conditions.

Now this year i finally bought my first house and built a plastic 14ft by 8. Fabulous.
Id say any wider and the things at the back get a bit mildewed and forgotton.

A good tip though is to have a bench that has a slatted or grid top that lets a bit of light in below with slatted shelves on top or even a row of minis inside so that you can basically have extra storage and shelf space . basically build up This works great for things you can grow in pots, chillies , plum tomatoes, aubergines carrots, spring onion salad, and all your seed trays in the winter. also you can grow things like cucumber in a corner by training them upwards onto the ridge same with grapes and to some extent melons. and put shade tolerators under the bench this is ususally my house plants in the summer.

The other thing is whatever size you get stick a couple of rows of bricks under , its a total pain to build a foundation but this will give you more space to grow upwards. This is what i did with my new greenhouse and it means that i can stand up to work in the eaves and have more shelves- of course watering can be a bit challeneging and you often get a stream down your arm!

good luck with yours what every size it is, some of my best crops came out of the minis!

One 8ft*10ft   one 16ft*16ft  greenhouse and a 20ft*10ft `Solar` tunnel

And still not enough to grow everything ;D

greenhouse envy attack coming on fast

WARNING-greenhouses are addictive. "I thought I could handle it,but one was not enough. Yes I do not sleep well when frost is predicted ,and in the summer I lay awake at nights worrying if red spider might could steal in"

You have been warned ;D

I have really missed not having access to the "big" greenhouse this year. I have to walk past it every day and all there is in it are a few self set tomatoes sprawling about...  :'(

I'm intending to stand again at the AGM... and get back in...
I wouldn't mind so much if they had used the season to do some maintenance on it... or I would have looked out and planted it up if they had asked..  :-X

December... or late November if they manage... too late for this season really. I won't put over winter stuff in as it interferes with the run up to the plant sales...  :-\

Hmmm. Was thinking I could probably squeeze a small greenhouse in the new veg plot when I do it next year. Now thinking I really need to get out there with the tape measure and figure out whether I can squeeze a huge one in ::)

You lot are a bad influence  ;D
