Cannas and manure

Hi
Looking at my bed of cannas (the red and orange flowered ones) and the flowers are now coming to an end :'( I usually chop them down around now. And was wondering if they would appreciate a mulch of manure? They did ok this year (it's a new bed) but not brilliantly (i.e. they are between 5 and 6ft tall, usually they are more like 7ft!)
I'll be tucking the yellow leaved and flowered cannas up separately with straw and fleece as they seem much more sensitive to cold and wet winters. :)
Thanks

thanks Biscombe, I can't remember ever giving them a feed before and they usually come up a treat. But as I have a moster pile of poo, I thought they might have appreciated a spadefull! Anyway that will save some work :)

I never cut mine back, as I believe the goodness goes back into the plant as the leaves wither. Wrapping the plants is useless. The top is dead, only the rizzome is alive so a deap mulch is better to keep them warm.

Thanks Ace. I'm trying to figure out why I cut them back (apart from generally tidying up) and can't !!
So either way a mulch won't do them any harm :D
