Hi Lucy
We wouldnt put bread in as this would encourage rats. Citrus fruits we cut up into smaller pieces.

As a general rule,no cooked food in the compost as it attracts vermin.

I put the odd bit of mouldy fruit in and I do not think it has caused any probs :)

Sorry but bread is not good for the birds either.
It fills up their stomachs but is not nutritious enough but then they don't have room to eat more nutritious food.

yeah, not even bread for the ducks for the same reason, Kea :-[

As has been said, not bread in the compost cos of the rat/foxes..mostly rats for me :-\....citrus, again, balance it out & cut it up small & mix it in...grapefruit halves, tho...stick them upended on the top of canes and attract the earwigs - which you can then dispose of 8)

Or just leave on the surface for the slugs to congregate for collection and destruction...  :)

Our council started allowing any food waste in the composting bins when they got a closed composter, so it would reach higher temperatures to kill off any nasty bugs, and the rats/birds/foxes couldn't get at the contents.

I guessed that :D - your waste from Derby probably goes to the same one as ours from Burton.

But I'd already written mine by the time I saw your post.

I will do - thanks ;D

Our site doesn't have anything as exciting as fabled sheds - or plant sales or open days  - or anything except plots and waters.
