broad beans and onions
« on: November 09, 2008, 19:23:30 »
hello all! i've just got an allotment and am laying incapacitated after 5 hours of digging!! :P

I'd appreciate advice on the following:

1. am i too late to plant in a couple of weeks broad beans and onions ( i work full time and need to break up the soil more)? if i'm not what is  the best variety to grow at end of nov?

2. if i put unrotted manure on the soil next to the bean seeds and onion sets will it adversely affect the growth of the above?

3. what is the best stuff to put on/in the clayish soil before i plant?

Cheers,

TD ;D

1. No! Get your Aquadulce broad beans in now and they will be fine. Overwintering onions and garlic too although you may find thatmost places have sold out of onion sets by now.
2. No! leave it there to rot down over winter then dig it in next spring.
3. Dig in plenty of manure and compost. Sounds like you are on the right track already.
