Hydrangea help please
« on: April 22, 2007, 08:05:39 »
The OH's grandad has two hydrangea bushes.  One a greenleaved variety, the other almost black (can't remember which is the pink and which is the blue now unfortunately).

The growing tips of the green variety are going brown and rotting.  There is evidence of whitefly (?).  The black doesn't seem to be affected.

Any ideas on cause/solution.  Sorry for the rubbish pics, but it will be a week or so before we get up there again.

Looking at the rest of the growing points these seem OK. The crown tip seem to be a bit scorched & chlorotic. It might even have been frosted!

I think all I would do is cut the tip off down to the next pair of unaffected leaves and hope that the new axil growth that will form will be OK, if not get back to us!

Chlorotic ??  (watered with tap water ? ).

Seems sensible.  From memory, it was only the lead shoot that was affected on each branch, all the lower down ones looked fine.

What to do with the whitefly ?  A good blast with the hose ?

Will get on the blower !

Many thanks.

now if it was a usual weather pattern for this time of year, i would agree with you.  i bet grandad has never watered them in his life before !!!!  The rain takes care of all that so I doubt if it's that as we've had precious little rain in weeks.

I'll whip the tops off as you suggested and will keep you updated.
