:o Wow Margaret :o How many ponds do you have in total? :o They are lovely, bet you have to watch your step in your garden. ;D

I use  HP Photo to reduce my images although there are many freebies on the net just as good, IrfanView was another you can download from downloads .com.

Thanks!!  Eric very kindly went through each step with me last night as to how to reduce the photos before putting them on here so you won't have to suffer the monstrous size of them in future. In fact I might have a little play again just to see how it works!!

Margaret, your ponds look fantastic!  Just wondering how you've constructed them.  We're planning a pond which will be raised up from the patio to the higher level of the soon to be lawn and were trying to decide how best to do it.  The pond in the forefront of your photo seems to be like that.

Right, another attempt to reduce the strain on your eyes, folks!! This is the view from my upstairs bedroom window of the garden. The pond on the left is my nature pond.

Jill, the raised pond was built for us by a specialist as hubby dug the original one 15 years ago and swore never again. We had the raised pond done to house the fish whilst we had the original one made larger.Unfortunately the blokes we got in made a complete hash of it and we had to get yet someone else to redo it so it was built up with breeze blocks then lined.I didn't want 2 formal ponds but i had no choice. The raised pnd holds 800 galls and the other one 1200. You need to get expert advice on a raised pond as the thichness of the support walls is paramount.

Many thanks Margaret.  I know how your hubby feels as we had to dig out about 25 tonnes of top soil when we created the patio and we swore we'd never do that again.  Our builder chappy was thinking of a concrete lining which would reinforce the single skin brick wall he was putting in.  But that was when the pond was going to be semi-circular, before the work was actually costed and found to be double the original budget.  We're now thinking a rectangle.

After hearing about your ponds for so long Margaret, it is great to actually see them.  Well done :D  They look really good and the lilies are lovely.  I'm really envious.  All I get each year is one solitary flower from my water lily.  I did hear that lilies don't like moving water which may be the cause of lack of flowers.  Would this be the case do you think :-\

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments.I have worked very hard and spent a lot of time and money to get them where they are today.

Yes,Roy i do have to watch my step! I fell in once, that was not funny! And i also have a lot of little froglets at the moment coming out my nature pond so it is not easy.

Jill, the easiest shape is indeed a rectangle or square when making a raised pond for obvious reasons when building up the bricks.Mine is 9' x 7' and my other pond is  12' x 10'. The only really important thing is to get it properly lined on the inside with concrete but then to treat it with the proper stuff,as cement is very dangerous to fish.

Pat,my lilies are near to a gentle bubbly fountain but not directly underneath. And they don't seem to have a problem! Possible a powerful waterfall and movement right round the pond would affect them more.I find the older they get,the better they grow and flower, for some strange reason. You could try feeding them with lily sachets as i do occasionally. But with so many lilies i just leave them to their own devices.

When i get my new camera i am looking forward to getting some close up photos of the fish. They are there, honest, but prefer to stay under the lilies where it is cooler i think at the moment.
