Cordyline
« on: January 20, 2010, 17:11:31 »
We have two of these in large half barrels outside my place of work, they are about 6yrs old - noticed this morning that one of them looks in a bad way.

The top spikes have flopped and its gone white-ish at the bit where they join the stem.  Noticed a few others in the gardens on my way to work have the same problem.

I am guessing this is due to frost damage.

Will it recover ?

They sometimes recover but after a long time and re sprout from near the base I seem to recall.  Every 3 or 4 years I seem to lose some Cordylines, they seem to rot at the crown.  I do have two that are about 15 feet tall now though.  The pink coloured ones seem to be more suceptible.
Best laid plans and all that

We bought two smallish ones 12 years ago, a red one and a green one.  We planted them in the ground when they got too big for pots the green one is nearly three metres high and flowers every year, the red one didn't last the first bad winter in the ground. I think the red are less hardy.
