Topic: Broad bean aquadulce

I'm running late on my early sowings and have some broad bean aquadulce in toilet rolls to go out this weekend - however, just seen on an online site that they shouldn't be planted after Jan. Should I give it a go or chuck them and try another variety?

Aquadulce are traditional overwintering broadies, but I would plant away bupster. Your beans may come a little later than those sown by end Jan, but the plants will be fine and crop anyways. You can tell yourself you are Sowing In Succession he he. When I took over my plot last year in May, I planted me broadies in the middle of the month, and they were a treat in the summer ;D

I have grown them as a later crop but there are other varieties better for later sowings such as Green Long Pod.

Aquadulce work well when sow early as they are very hardy.

I put mine in in October and they've started coming up right in time for the horrible weather!  Do I need to protect them, and if so, what's the best way of doing it?

They should be fine as they are hardy, though pigeons do take a fancy to them in hard weather so you may want to cover them to be on the safe side.

Fleece would be fine.

Jerry should this type grow up canes or are they a bush?  I planted mine over Winter and they are ok but some have another shoot coming up from the bottom.

Broads dont need canes as such though they can do with a little support, I place canes along the rows and run string from cane to cane at 3 levels to give some support from wind.

I ususally plant my aquadulce about mid-February, and they do fine. As things are this year, I only bought them the other day! Yours will be fine, they'll just crop a little later than the overwintered ones.

I've been brutal to my BBeans.  Started them off in itchy-finger flurry in Jan, sprouted well infront of the radiator, grew & grew. 

Remember that brief warm spell? put them out to harden off, went out for the evening, came home about 11pm: BBeans keeled over in the icy cold.  Thought "Sod it" and left them. 

All bar two (from 8 tubes - 7 sprouted) survived and were outgrowing their loo rolls.  Planted them two weekends ago (final unsprouted loo roll actually showing leaves) with some seeds straight into the ground to boot. They seem tough little b*ggers so far, so lets see what they can do.

I'm willing them to survive and give you a good crop bennettsleg - they seem to be fighters !! lolol  ;D
