chicks
« on: June 11, 2014, 13:50:52 »
Hello All,

Every year we have Blue tits nesting in the bird box, this year being no different.
Until I checked inside the box and found 4 dead chicks.

Is there anyone out there who could shed some light on why this happens.
I remember the parents being attentive to the chicks. The mind boggles.

(Hope the picture doesn't offend)

Many thanks,
Gertie.

Hi,
If the parents are disturbed in the nesting box sadly they will abandon it.

Perhaps something has eaten the parents.  Cat, hawk, kite, etc.  Maybe an infection, we found dead birds scattered around the garden about four years ago.

Maybe something - probably not you - scared the parents so badly they abandoned the nest. Small birds have short and interesting lives, and there are all sorts of possibilities.

Those chicks look very close to fledging. It's a bit of a mystery...

It's a huge mystery as nothing has changed in the garden. I look after guide dogs occasionally
but I've done that for some years now. Clutching at straws now.....mind boggling.

Gertie.
