Peppers & Chillies in or out?
« on: June 14, 2007, 21:33:43 »
I’ve been given two each of the above by a colleague at work, just before he disappeared no his hols. Question, are they best potted and grown in the greenhouse or out into the raised bed? Any info would be appreciated.

Here in Edinburgh I grow them in the house or in the greenhouse. I can't answer for elsewhere.

Last year I grew them in a cold frame/mini green house and they did OK. This year I have put them im the green house and they are doing really well.

they ARE doing well TS.  What are they?

I usually grow them in the greenhouse but they do well on the patio in pots as well.

Thanks - they are a sweet pepper called Sweet Chocolate form the Real Seed Company. When ripe they are a sort of chocolate brown and are quitw sweet to eat - but not chocolatey!! For salads etc only, not puddings!

I was hoping to plant mine out at the Lotti with my aubergines - novice that I am -  is this a definite no no!

I planted two (Espanola and Mirasol) out on the allotment last year in late June  - they were about 12" high, and they were fine.

I also some in containers in the garden which were ok. If they've been used to indoors, it is probably safest to harden them off for a few days before putting them outside permanently.

If you want to over winter them bring them back in before the first frost.

Should mention I'm in London - so probably have a few degrees edge on Cheshire.

Sweet peppers don't need as much warmth as chillies. I have a vague memory that chillies like an ambient temperature of about 23degrees but could be wrong. Anyway I tried them outside here in Edinburgh and didn't really get anywhere so I'm greenhousing and window-ledging this year.

I've put some spare ( from the sale) Sweet Peppers in the Lottie and Chillies in a hot box... Glass sides.. temporary roof... off at the moment to get a good soaking...

Thanks for the replies! I think the greenhouse is the best option. Hope mine turn out like yours TS.

The very hot chillies need to be in a greenhouse or indoors.
The mild or 'normal' heat ones do fine outdoors,
I had a massive crop of georgia flame chillies on my old allotment which I had left unattended.
They are very mild, but very big.

I grew a load of others outdoors in pots last year and they were fine.

I am so far behind this year regards planting out, as I have a new allotment covered in couch grass which needs to be cleared first.

I have a few inside but most are outside.
Last year I got lots of chillis off the allotment plant.  The peppers were ok but not as big as the greenhouse ones.
Good luck, whatever you decide to do,
