Topic: brown markings on Charlotte potatoes

This is the third year we have grown Charlottes.  This year, when washed, each one almost has pale brown markings-not bumpy and raised up like scab.  The marks just peel off and the potatoes are lovely-delicious steamed.  Would it have anything to do with the weather?

Probably! I'm growing Charlottes but haven't lifted any yet. I'll do so at the weekend and have a look to see if any of mine are like that.

It's interesting because I dug up some Anya a couple of weeks ago, grown in the same row, and they were perfect.  I also dug up some Nicola-again, perfect.  Up to now, it just seems to be affecting the Charlottes, and yet they're all in the same bed.

I've lifted a few Charlotte so far and all seems as normal despite the weather.

I can't think why yours might have fared differently from other types in the same ground grown under the same conditions.

Have you grown any other varieties to compare them to?

got some two week old kestrels out of a dark sack today and they also have the tan coloured stripes in places. It looks like a lurgy. They looked perfect when I put them away  ???

"Pink Rot" or "water stain".... just looked it up and the following website looks quite informative.

Might this be what your spuds are suffering from? It sounds very like it to me.  :(

THink I might have had that ona Lady Chrystl.... the thing was well weird, never seen anythign like it before....

It didn`t look like pink rot. It is only on the surface and is slightly indented and mostly in the form of a strip. Tan coloured, shiny and firm, maybe 1/2 cm wide. All potatoes were carefully hand lifted and handled carefully so it`s unlikely to be damage. The inside is good and the potato is very edible but I am seeing more and more appear on my lifted potatoes

Tbh, I am glad I am not relying on these for storing. I may set to and part roast a tray full today, for the freezer. I don`t trust them to keep at all, even the kestrels

Ah, now I hadn't thought of part roasting them!  I've never done it before....how long should I roast them for?  And no, mine don't look like pink rot either....sound just like yours Strawberry.

I did it, and they lokk fabulous- I think they might be my best ever!  Have never par boiled and shaken them about before-what a difference!  You're never too old to learn!

My mum, 92, has always part-boiled her potatoes for roasting - great aren't they!!  :)
