Strkes me as being rather early - I remember hearing them in the early summer when I was at school in Norfolk, but haven't heard one since.

I think it's a bit early too, although I could be wrong
There is a rhyme, I can't remember it all, but it is something about in April he comes to stay, in May he sings all day
Friendship isn't a big thing.
Its a million little things.

My grandmother used to say

"The cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May,
In the middle of June he changes his tune,
And then he flies away."

I like the rhyme. Perhaps we could start another topic on gardening sayings and rhymes - they must be preserved.

i have a couple of cuckoo ones ;D

in april come he will
in flowery may he sings all day
in leafy june he changes tune
in late july he's ready to fly
in august go he must

not tried this one yet as i havent heard a cuckoo in years :(
when walking along outside, if you hear a cuckoo you should turn over all the coins in your pocket whilst saying;
'lucky coins now i count thee, cuckoo fairy bring me bounty'
you are supposed to come into a bit of money  :D
'blood sweat and tears really don't matter, just the things that you do in this garden'
