Might sound gross, but need help or advice
« on: April 08, 2007, 16:02:09 »
Hello,

OH is away till next Sunday and I cannot think of how to get the brown scum/scale/lining from the toilet bowl to go! I don't want to pour in a gallon of bleach, it just bleaches it, doesn't get rid of it. Brushing doesn't seem to do a blind bit of difference.

Is there a special home made concoction that would work, before resorting to buying a set of marigolds and a ten pack of washing up sponges?

I keep thinking of bicarbonate of soda or sodium something or other. There's got to be a way.

anyone out there know of a solution???

many thanks in advance

Tesco limescale remover, blue bottle, leave to soak overnight scrub flush and do again and again once a week keeps it at bay but don't let it build up.   ;D ;D ;D

vinegar is what you want. tip a good old splosh in there and leave as long as poss, preferably overnight and then give a good scrub with stiff brush. do that once a week and you shouldnt need nasty chemicals. (yeah yeah i know vinegar is a chemical blah blah ::))

Hi Dolphin,

My NGOH says leave it `til next sunday  ;D

I use limelite or viacal, both do what they say on the can.

Or see if you can find a product called one-shot. Its for blocked drains.
I think its concentrated sulphuric acid, don`t get it on your skin,
wear gloves and old clothes, don`t get splashed, don`t breath the
fumes, don`t use if you have asthma, ventilate and close off the room.

Actually you`ll be safer with vinigar. Try that first.

Has anybody ever tried cillit bang ?

good old liquid harpic, i live in the south and water presents in a terrible limescale, harpic does the job excellently.  They also do a super duper one for folk who have used everything else, allowing the limescale to build up and now need to get rid of it!!!

I'm sure I read somewhere that coca cola is a very good toilet cleaner. Proper one, not diet or anything.

Yup! Full Fat Coke shifts most things, except the inches on your hips!
Mate tried it and left it overnight, came up a treat!

Any acid will do it. vinegar, certainly, or coke. It contains, I think, phosphoric acid, or if not, something which sounds similar. Having seen what it does to coins, I wouldn't want it anywhere near my stomach lining!

Spirits of Salt.  Not easy to track down these days but we swear by it.  Toilet comes up like new if you tip some down and leave it overnight.

WARNING:  Always leave the window wide open.  Always completely cover your nose and mouth when pouring as this stuff is mighty dangerous.

Once poured, we put an open newspaper over the top of the toilet, close the lid and leave the window open all night.

Will need a swift brush and flush in the morning.  You will be amazed.

If you choose to use this method please do take care as I'm sure I don't need to tell you how hazardous spirits of salt is.  Having said that, we've used it for years and years without a single accident and swear by it.

Is there anything nice that can be added in the cistern bit to keep the limescale down?

Thank you all for your tips.

I'll try them all. I really need to get an old style brush too. My current one is circular and can't get into the corners. tch.

Coca-cola - really?  Do you just pour it down and, what, leave it overnight?  (Good grief - imagine what it can do to your teeth  :o - I hardly ever drink it, but even that's about to stop!!)

I remember an experiment at school (many moons ago) where we left a pulled tooth in cola, and watched it over the days as it dissolved  :P :o.........put me off for life!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

It certainly does dissolve calcium most effectively. Never done the 'tooth' experiment (although I have heard about it) -- however, for years I've used Coca-Cola to dissolve coatings of barnacles from old bottles etc found while diving.  Cleans 'em up a treat! :)

Brick cleaner - sold at most DIY stores - is this stuff.
