I have a number of Tumbling Tom seedlings almost ready to go out. Can anyone advise me how far they will trail? ie how high do the baskets/troughs need to be?
Also, do you need to pinch out the side shoots like you do on other toms?
Apologies for daft questions, not having a good day..... :(

They trail upto 18" in my experience, though I only ever grew TTs once then reverted back to the more expensive Tumbler cos it gave nicer fruit in my opinion!
I grow three per 12" hanging basket which has to be watered regularly or else!
Don't pinch out. They are determinate and just ramble away.

How big are your seedlings ready for planting out wivvles?
-
Thanks for advice Moonbells - that fits in nicely with my plans!
oubykh - they're about 5 - 6 inches high and fast outgrowing the 5 inch pots that they're in. Planning to plant them this weekend - have been hardening off since last Saturday.

Thanks, y'awl - this thread has reminded me that I need to get the rest of my toms potted up this weekend.
I grow them all in large planters and troughs (and this year, hanging baskets) on the patio, where I can keep an eye on them & pick them as and when necessary. J-I-T gardening/cooking!
Got two "Big Boy" plants in their final planters already -they were given to me by my dad, and typically are about a month more advanced than mine (he has a heated greenhouse).
Three "Lemon Tree" plants - from old seed found in the shed when I took over the lottie.
Four "Crystal"
and about 10 "Tumbling Tom", which are going into the baskets. (Thanks, Moonbells, I was wondering if I could get away with three in a basket).
Should keep us in toms for the summer... (we like tomatoes)

I've crammed 5 in my basket! We'll see what happens, one of them is a rather sorry looking little thing, so I'd call it 4! I also have 2 in a pot. I put them from the growhouse into their homes at the weekend, and they seem to be fine so far. No shortage of watering from the skies here at the moment ;D

You're lucky, then. Although we have had a bit of rain recently, the soil on the lottie is bone dry when you dig down.
Im on nightly watering missions at the moment.
