Title: Got my Lottie at long last Hoorah!!!
Post by: lanky lass on May 10, 2005, 22:35:23
Hi everyone got myself a lottie today. Its fab. It belonged to an elderly chap that can't work it anymore due to arthritis.
It's quite over grown but among other things thats been left is a shed and a greenhouse(originally a lean to for a house i've been told). Shed's a bit ramshackle but not complaining  :) Greenhouse/lean to need a few panes replacing.
Can't wait to get stuck in. :) :)

Congrats LL.  Plenty of hard work from here on in!  Listen at me - I've not picked up a spade in anger yet  ;D   I need to do something quick though as I've run out of raised beds and builders sacks.

It'll be great fun though or should be if you don't try to do too much at once  :)

Spent a couple of hours this morning weeding one of the beds. Told myself I had to finish it before i went home. Now got very sore hands ::) But it looks a lot better. Dug out the odd old onion. Would carrots be ok to grow here?
I'm in Blackburn Plottie!! So not that far from you.
Got some spuds "chitting" at home and pumpkins have germinated for the kids!! Waiting for cucumbers to show still.
So much to do...........

I think it is also known as no dig, layered cardboard method etc....

LL   I'm doing lasagne too but I do get quite a few detractors so be prepared.  I want to see it through as an experiment so see if it does work and how well and what the pitfalls are.  You do need lots of materials for mulching and starting off so start collecting cardboard which is the first thing you'll need, oh and manure, straw, newspaper etc   The HDRA book gives good advice on this.

I've got my spuds through and they are looking good and the problem is earthing up and does it need doing at all if they are under black sheet mulch.  Thought I would just in case so I stuffed some straw round them and tucked it in as it does blow away.  It looks a bit odd but what the heck  ;D

Hi All, Been really busy since getting lottie last Tuesday.
One overgrown bed's been weeded, dug over and divided
in two. Have planted carrot seed in one part yesterday, under fleece (have heard of the dreaded carrot fly).
Other half i will put some spuds in. Was advised to plant my peas in seed trays instead of straight  outside as problem
with mice stealing them on our lotties. So did this today and put them in the greenhouse. Hubby and brother and all our kids came to help today. Gave kids an overgrown bed to weed, they seemed to enjoy getting mucky without getting told off. ;)  Hubby had to brake into greenhouse for me. He replaced a couple of panes of perspex that had blown out.
Me and my brother busily pulled all the weeds up from inside it. I mistakingly pulled up a grapevine,(thought it was a dying weed Doh!). My brother told me to replant it,so i put potting compost around the roots and a good soaking. Maybe ok?
Have got a gooseberry bush, and a massive rubarb plant amongst all the weeds. It's like a treasure trove i keep finding things.......... :) :)

And finally Beautifull nesting swan on canal bank next to my lottie.
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/lankylass/P4230007.jpg) She's been nesting for a few weeks now. One of lottie neighbours feeds her daily. Won't be long before the eggs hatch! :)

That's all for now. Sorry if pics a bit big ,don't know how to make them smaller?

Ta for the pics.  Looks idyllic especially with the swan  :)  Looks like your youngest is enjoying it so hopefully you'll always have a willing helper  ;D

Yes Wardy He's a very willing helper, If he knows i'm going he always want to come with me. Has great fun using the fork and pulling out weeds......Other Son been a couple of times and enjoyed himself, but he also like playing out with his friends so we might not get as much help off him?
