Title: In or out????
Post by: RobinOfTheHood on May 10, 2005, 21:33:27
Got some tomatoes 'marmande' happily growing away in pots, but should I put them in the greenhouse or outside?  ???

I also have quite a few gardener's delight, of which I'm going to put a few inside and a few out, but I think I read on here that marmande does not like to be under glass. Is this true?  ???

Your Marmande will be happiest outside or so it says in the Organic Gardening Catalogue (I just checked)  :)   It also says it will need support and some pruning.

Any will grow well inside but some won't be happy outside unless it's really warm

Yes - if you hand pollinate?

Put them outside in a sunny spot in your garden, but make sure you get them used to it first for a few days by putting them out in the day then bringing them in at night.I have always grown marmandes outside and they seem to do really well.

Gunnerbee, where in the country are you?

I'm in South yorks, this is my first time growing Marmande, I had decent results outside with gardeners delight last year until the blight struck, although me dad did better in his greenhouse.

If catalogue says it's ok to grow outside (which it does) then I'd go for it or do half in and half out  ;D        I always do G Delight outside and it's fine.  I don't have a greenhouse and have grown lots of toms outdoors.  Grew Red Alert once which were ok too.  I'm growing Mortgage Lifter for the first time which is an outdoor type and G Delight outside.  I put them in tubs yesterday.  I think they'll be fine

Here they are - they're only little just now  :)

PS  I do have more than two plants  ;D

Hand pollination is unnecessary, a few whacks on the cane on a warm day gets the pollen moving sufficiently, it has the same effect as those electric bees the commercial growers use

Electric bees?

Blimey, I hope they don't make electric wasps as well  ;)
