Title: Cold Frame
Post by: SpeedyMango on April 11, 2005, 13:38:15
I don't have a greenhouse as we're not allowed them on our plots (only little sheds), but here's my attempt at a little light carpentry at the weekend:

It's four and a half feet square, made out of some old secondary glazing panels my Dad had lurking in his garage (he's a great source of useful stuff!). The minor carpentry was simply screwing the panels to four stakes (shortened tree stakes to be exact) that sink about eighteen inches into the ground at each corner. The 'lid', three more glazing panels, is currently held on by sisal 'guy ropes' (not shown in the pic) to make sure they don't take flight across the allotments in a high wind. A more permanent method of fixing the lid panels down may be devised when I've got time, although it's useful to be able to completely remove them for access.

It's placed over a previously manured bed, and will be used for growing salad crops etc (hopefully giving a longer season and keeping some of the bugs and slugs off).

Judging by the speed it heated up on Sunday, I think that 'cold' frame is a misnomer!
