Hi all!!  :D

I got Grow Your Own Vegetables from The Book people for £3.99  a couple of months ago, they may still have it on their website, or it's usually on Amazon.  There is a wealth of info in it.  I really liked her star rating as to which crops give a bigger crop in the same space.  Loads of reading!  I have also got Dr Hessayon's Veg and Herb book which is really good but he likes to use chemicals.

yes, i totally agree with tulippa:)

i find joy larkcom's book very very good reading - not only descriptions of vegeetables and techniques, but everything else for the gardening novice.

dr hessayon's has pictures of the pests, so good in that respect, but he does recommend a lot of chemicals which i will try to avoid.

i think the two book compliument each other but my first choice is definately joy's book :)

happy reading
our local blackwell's always has a copy on the shelf.

Another Larkcom fan here, support whats been said already. Grow your own Vegetables is my "bible" - wouldn't be without it, combined with what I learn from this site! I got my copy from Amazon last year.

Definitely worth getting that book.
There is another book of hers that i like called Creative Vegetable gardening - not much info , but so much inspiration...

Nobbs xx  ???

Link a bord is made at a factory near me.  It's recycled double skin plastic boards which click together to form raised beds, planters, whelping boxes etc
They have a permanent display at the HDRA.  They have a web site which is probably www.linkabord.com   (something like that)   They claim it to be rotproof, ratproof, won't warp or crack or lose its colour (comes in green, black, yellow, white and blue)  They also say it keeps your plants warmer so they put on more growth

I can't substantiate any of it as I have only just got mine.  I wanted to be able to make a raised bed myself without sawing, cutting, painting, drilling, hammering, etc so I get myself some.  See piccy below. I have a larger one now and will take a photo tomorrow  :)  I have put the box up now and I've put dowels in the pre drilled holes so I can put fleece or netting over

So after all your talk about Joy Larcom I went to Book People and ordered it.  I also ordered a book called 'The Complete Book of Vegetables, Herbs and Fruits'.  With all this reading I won't be able to get to the lottie  :o

This is my link a bord raised bed which I treated myself too as I couldn't be bothered with making another one from timber (as my bad back is just getting right).  Getting 12 or 14' lengths of timber in my little Fiesta is a pain in the ar*e  quite literally  ;D.  I wouldn't recommend it yet as I haven't used it but it slots together easy but bit of a pig getting the dowels in as holes weren't drilled quite right the way through.  You can put 2 m long dowels in hoop style to support net or fleece

Here's a pic of the built up thing.  It will go as high as you wish to each new level adds cost. This little lot cost me £45  :o   We have rabbits all over the place so I hope it's high enough to keep the devils off  :)
The company who make it locally say it's everything proof and keeps plants warm   I think this will be a one off as I like to use stuff I've scrounged but at least the plastic is recycled  :)

I think this is the best possible vegetable growing book there is, the way it is divided up is great. It's an enjoyable read I take it to bed with me,(I know I need to get out more.) but it is also  brilliant if you just need to find out something specific, it is precise and to the point, well worth buying.

I agree - 'tis a brills book, lots of info.

I've also got the RHS Growing Vegetables by Tony Biggs.  I think this is a good beginners book too - lots of illustrations and a handy month by month guide at the back.
