Title: Gardeners and their cats
Post by: Georgie on March 31, 2005, 21:28:18
Over on the pest thread a few of us have strayed into tales about our beloved cats.  So I'm moving that discussion here with a picture of Tiger, who adopted us last September.

I am so sorry about this, I swear that when I looked to make sure the picture was on the post, it wasn't there,  just a reclangle with a little cross in it.
Oh well now you've got it twice.
Just in case you hadn't already guessed it, I'm as daft as a brush!

MM, that is a fab pic - and so droll - but how come Merlin has gone from grey to brown?

Good question and bear with me as I try to type with him on my lap demanding a cuddle!
He is basically grey but in places particularly underneath he is almost a peachy colour.  And of course like all tabbies each hair is rarely just one colour.  Depending on the light his colour can change and the potted version was taken in bright sunlight and I think before I bought my digital camera.  But I promise it is Merlin but the first photo you saw represents his colour better.
oh that's better he's got off my lap now.  He's not too hot on typing!
I think it's said that all tabby cats have a brown colour in there somewhere, whether they are brown, red or grey.  Even black cats can have a brownish tabby markings in the right light.

Gorgeous photos!

I had a cat-tastic day yesterday. Went to Marwell Zoo to see the ?amur tigers (used to be called Siberian) and their three cubs. Still fluffy with slightly oversized limbs. V. cute. Didn't take photos though--two were indoors so behind glass and I couldn't get a decent view of the other one (posing outside with dad). Harrumph. But loads of big cats: snow leopards (the old one seemed rather agitated--that's the down side of zoos. Apparently there's a new improved enclosure being built.) Oh, and some teeny cats too--sand cats, I think they were called? I only saw one, curled up in a ball sleeping (as I expect our Katje was back home).

Given our wee discussion about the merits or otherwise of cat mint, do you think that  if I plant some next to my compost bin I can avoid the mouse-nest in compost bin horror I've read about? Or even worse, rats.... I know they have rats on the other side of the allotment site and I do not want to see any on my plot.

Best,
Melanie

Could be a plan, Melonie, but then again are you prepared for Katje - that is the name of your cat isn't it? - to start bring home little 'presents' if mice/rats do decide the compost bin looks comfy?

Hi Melanie,
I can see where you're coming from regarding the catmint but if you want to keep mice out of the compost I would think the best thing would be to make sure it doesn't get too dry.  I wouldn't think they would nest in compost that was on the damp side and being turned or forked or whatever you do with yours woud disturb them.  I have read about the mice in compost but they have all been on lotties where the compost has been left for some time, from the previous resident.
We have mice, I'm sure, under our shed in the garden and from time to time I catch Merlin playing with a terrified mouse.  Some times I can save it by catching Merlin not the mouse!!
Other times I find a little body on the lawn, thankfully he doesn't bring them into the house, well not often.  Horrid as it may sound I would rather he caught mice than our Blackbirds, but I don't expect the mice see it that way.

Post by: Melanie on April 04, 2005, 11:34:44
Katje does bring us mouse presents from the garden (not the allotment--it's a couple of miles away). Alas for her (but not for the mice), the garden isn't as much of a mouse paradise as it used to be (landlord has done some tidying up). However, I am grateful for her mousing skills because every so often one of the little blighters breaks in to our house. The first we know of it is usually the cat deciding to sleep downstairs instead of on the bed, and then we know to shut the bedroom door that night. They're definitely getting in of their own accord: we don't have a cat flap, so she's not bringing them in.

I've taken her away from a mouse a couple of times--could be why I'm not her favourite any more--but the best mouse trick I've seen is when one plays dead until she gets bored (it really does happen).... She comes in for a snack and mouse gets up and runs as fast as it can. She is most confused when she goes back to the spot where she left it.

In the two years Katje's been with us she's only caught one bird. Thankfully, she doesn't seem to know how to handle them. She miaows at birds, especially blackbirds and crows, and she ducks when they fly past her! We've watched her stalking them and really she's totally incompetent at it--runs at the wrong time, or miaows. I don't know if it's frustration or what that makes her miaow, but I'm glad for it. She seems positively scared of crows--I've never seen a cat scared like that before.

So, damp compost regularly turned it is then....

Best,
Melanie

hi maz, yes he is adorable (but of course I am bias) and very loving.  :)
No he hadn't been doing anything strenuous, just wandering around checking things over and making sure he still had some catmint.  But he loves to be outside when it is sunny, Toby (dog) is the same.

Yes she was 5 weeks old then, she's 7 years now but still very small as she's half Siamese.

This is Buster, sadly a birdkiller extraordinaire at this time of year but very lovable nevertheless

Title: Re: Gardeners and their cats
Post by: Merlins Mum on May 26, 2005, 21:46:41
Buster is a very handsome boy but looks like he means business!!
Unfortunately it's a natural instinct for cats to catch birds, mice and so on.  They will never be as domesticated as dogs, and I for one love them the more for it.  I'm surprised Lily isn't as bad being half Siamese.  When I was young we had a black and white cat who was half Siamese and he was a b****r.  Got into next door and managed to get their budgie out of it's cage and then left a pile of feathers under one of our trees.  :'(

MM

I mean I love them more because they are not wholly domesticated

Aww-wish I knew how to post photos-you could all meet `Rags`. I found her in a most pitiful state 7 weeks ago,fur all matted and starving.

£400 later and with her heart rate controled, five teeth removed,a thyroid removed and a shave that a skinhead would be proud of-she is now enjoying life in West Deping :)

My poor little Alice didnt see another cat for over a year after her 'sis' Hannah died.  :'(  There were  no other cats about. Then some new peeps moved in with Toby ( hes trouble, I can tell!)  ;D and next door have just got 2  x 7 weekold tabby kittens Clueseau (s/p) and Cato.

I love this thread too.  Stephen , my Alice was a rescue with a very sad tale to tell, its wonderful to see how shes blossomed. I wish you many tears of happiness with her.

People think of me as preferring cats to dogs just because I only have a cat, but I adore dogs ( am I allowed to use that word on this thread?)   :-X  ;)

Im just an 'animal person'.

Just loved looking at all the new photos of all the lovely cats and what unusual names some of them have :)

Lovely photos of Thunders and Tyla BC - Thunders really looks as if he has been at the old amber nectar doesn't he :D

How beautiful is Rags Stephan - considering all that she has been through, poor thing, but it looks as if she has found a really loving home with you, I'm so glad you were able to get help in posting a photo :)

Great photo of Egbert Kitty, what lovely colouring he is, but I'm afraid I cannot see the second photo MM, have kept refreshing the page, but nothing :'(

Rufka is lovely MM - I love black animals (as you will have guessed if you have seen photos of my dogs ;) :))

Keep the photos coming everyone :)

ALL the cats here are gorgeous. I wish I could comment on each and every one, but it would take forever :o
We've got any number of daft pictures of our two boys, so I'll see if I can find any more, when I get time ;D

I'm actually more of a dog person (but only barely). My hubby is the 'cat person', although we both just love all animals really ;D

Stephan, I can hardly believe that Rags was in such a poorly condition such a short time ago. You (and the vet) have worked absolute wonders, and she looks fantastic. What a lucky cat she is to have found you :)

sorry kitty, I have the photo named bunty and doris, so I've always thought it was your bunty.  ooops sorry myrtle.
doris was so photogenic wasn't she.  I haven't got a bad one of her and I seem to have quite a few.

maz, this is so weird, I wonder why we can't see them.  then again, sometimes they appear but not often  :(

Now I have the hang of this photo thingy, this is Merlin.  Bird killer and frog harasser extraordinaire
Title: Re: Gardeners and their cats
Post by: Merlins Mum on May 29, 2005, 08:36:44
oh baggy he goes after the frogs too  :'(
some might find this strange but I personally find this much harder to cope with.  frogs often scream when being played with by cats, a scream you wouldn't imagine they could make and they can play with them till they die but they never eat them (someone might prove me wrong on this).  chivers who was a bird catcher, a collector of a neighbours goldfish was also a molester of frogs.  It got so bad that in the end we filled in our tiny pond and took all the frogs (obviously missed a few) to a local pond about a mile away.
having said all this I loved him dearly and it brok my heart when he was hit by a car and killed :)
and I still think your merlin is a handsome boy.

also pleased you've got the hang of posting photos, the more the better  :)

What lovely photos-I still miss the ones now departed, but there is one consolation? Cleo and Rags are lazy ladies so there are birds nesting in the garden again.

That frog scream is eerie-wish I still had frogs, the garden used to be full of them until two years ago-the grass snakes moved in and took them all.

That's two Merlins I want now!   ;)

I am fortunate in that my two nearly-17 year olds don't bother the birds.  Fletcher brought a live Magpie, about as big as him, through the cat flap when he was 6 months old and the experience seems to have put him off for life.  (I caught it in a towel and let it go - it seemed none the worse for wear.)  We get the odd wood mouse and that's about it.

Tiger, on the other hand , looks like he might be trouble when he gets braver.  He's already chasing my large frog around and today he scaled the Jasmine - persumably after a bird.  Thing is, he makes so much noise I should imagine he scares off the birds 3 gardens down!   ;D

I hope it stays that way...

My Merlin has very soft fur.  He is a British shorthair but to be honest he is just a mog to me - I could never tell the difference apart from him being totally grey.  (no optical illusion stripes )  The frog he was harassing didn't scream so he either killed it outright or it was doing the I'm-dead-so-don't-bother act.  Let's hope it was the latter. ???

freddy must have a lot of bb in him-but he has a white tummy too-so far from pure bred-arent their faces lovely and round...i think frogs do play dead.....and i dont think they like to gnash them(cats i mean)as they taste nasty.....
lets hope your frogs ok anyway...

Just catching up with the messages on this thread, but sad to say I still cannot see some of the photos :'(  Can see the one of Bunty & Doris though - what a great photo :)

Talking of frogs 'playing dead', we found what we thought was a dead baby newt indoors the other night.  I gently picked it up - it was not stiff so I hoped it wasn't dead.  I put it outside and when I looked in the morning it had gone, so hopefully had found its way back to the pond.

Hopefully next time I look, the photos will re-appear :-\ :)

Hi Gardengirl

Aww what a fab pic of the two of them together.

I have something similar of Alice ( on the left) with her adopted sis Hannah. I lost Hannah this time last year at the age of 15 . :'(  She was such a sweetie taking to Alice in the way she did.  :-*

A lovely pic maz, but I feel sad for you to have lost Hannah, it's like losing a part of you. :'(  Still I know you will have so many lovely memories as I know kitty does of doris. :)
Some people say the pain of losing a pet is too much and they will never have another.  Not me, they give so much to us, that  the pain of their passing is a price I'm prepared to pay.  I can't imagine my life for long without a cat about the place.  :)

Oh Baggy I had the same thing for years with one of mine. She would go on the firld oposite me and get herself a nice mouse or rat to bring home. Sometimes she ate them and sometime she let them go in the house.  :o

One day the washing machine flooded the kitchen. She had brought a rat in, of course I didnt know, and it had eaten the pipes at the back.  ::)  The hassle we had to get it fixed and to find and get rid of that rat!

She use to catch something and eat it in the hall at night while we were asleep. In the morning I'd get up to a bird or mouse face ( she never ate that bit) on my carpet.  :-X  As the carpet is red I learned NEVER to pick bits up with my hands without looking at it properly first.  ;)

Why do we keep them? Cos we love them and they know it!  ;D

Then when she had her kittens she would take them over to him ( even though he was trying to sleep) to look after.
There are 2 in the bed. One of them is right by his nose.

Yesterday my favourite niece (I know you shouldn't have favourites) and her OH received news that all cat owners dread.  Their beloved Bailey had been killed. :'(  He was so much a part of their lives, always there to greet them when they got home from work and lending a helping paw when his dad was doing any DIY.
I have been feeling tearful ever since, it's as if I'm sharing their pain. :'(

Heldi he looks lovely, I love his smile.  We have a cat who smiles just like that but he has been missing since the 17th.  He does go off some times but never this long so I am beginning to worry now.  Each time the children come in they ask if he is back and his brother looks so lonely. I have phoned round all the local vets, RSPCA, council, put notes through all the doors in the area and a notice up in the shop, not much more I can do now, just hope!

Shall go and phone the vet and ask about microchipping for the one we still have now!

I agree it is revolting to hear of people who hurt innocent animals.  I have no sympathy whatsoever for them and it makes me feel very very cross!! >:( >:( >:(
What is amazing here is that the culprits are "two old dears"!  Incredible!

Hi Marianne. Yes unfortunately it is a couple who are probably in their 70's. It is the woman more thaqn the man,who looks completely downtrodden. The woman is always complaining..."wish they wouldn't feed the birds!" "I would poison all the cats" and also she moans about the kids making too much noise. Anyway I'll be telling her to stick to throwing rocks at the moon not at my cat when I catch her. Neanderthals.   >:(  ;)

I thought I would stick a couple of pics of our two since everyone else seems to be  ;D

First is our oldest called Blue.
Weird name for a cat but we thought it was quite fitting. She was living at a friend of a friend who let her in twice a day once in the morning and once at night, fed her then put her back out again  ???

As you can see she loves lounging around the garden.

Our other cat (well kitten atm) we got from cat protection in January he was about 4/5 months old then and
was rescued from a shed where he was living with his sister and ferrell mum.

He is a definate hunter, built for speed and mischief. As you can see I had to snatch this pic on the move as he is rarely in one place long enough to get a picture.
We think there is some varient of siamese in him and a definate streak of the devil.

Oh well, can't blame a gal for trying. ;)

I have two other cats who are both very loving but we had them from 8 weeks old, 17 years ago!  Poor Tiger, on the otherhand, had clearly been ill-treated in his short life (he was about 2 when he adopted us)  so it's hardly surprising he's still wary.  He has decided that he's my guard cat now, btw.  If I'm in any room he follows me then flops in the doorwell.  And if he senses I'm about to go out, he flops on the door mat, daring me to open the front door.  He's such a character, and so beautiful, I can't imagine why anyone would wish to harm him.  Still, he's landed a loving home now, that's the main thing I think.   :)

I seem to remember you said they were more senior ladies, well they don't look it.  And I'm glad it's not just Merlin who is allowed to sit on the worktop, ahem  ;)

How about some more pics of your other two Georgie.

Aw it's been nice to catch up with the puddie tats. Georgie I love Tiger,he is such a handsome puss. Gardengirl,Penny and Poppy look so cuddley. Have they been together forever? MM I want some more pics of Merlin pleeeease!

I would really like another cat. Spook was holding up the traffic today, sitting in the middle of the road. I didn't see it ,my brother told me after he went out to his car. My heart leapt into my mouth but I think most people around here know he is deaf. I wonder if I should do a leaflet drop to be sure? Its awkward as I've heard so many of so many anti cat people around here too.

I wanted another cat when we got Spook...a hearing companion...I was over ruled ...wished I'd made more of a fuss about it now. Spook has a very scrawny scruffy friend puss who comes to see him.I don't know if he/she is owned by anyone.Unfortunately I  couldn't take it in as Cass the dog is understanding of kittens but not of fully grown cats...apart from Spook ofcourse!

Oh Heldi, I love the idea of Spook holding up the traffic!  Cats rule, eh?   :)

Okay, here are some pics of my other two cats, Fletcher and Shelley, who are 17 now although these were taken a couple of years ago.  The first is a fairly typical pose and the other two show them 'helping' in the garden.   ;)

Aw Shelley and Fletcher are lovely. I grew up with a black and white cat called Felicity. Shelley reminds me of her. Fletcher would look nice with Spook!  I love black cats. We lost one last year. :(  Jasper. He was OH's cat but he lived with OH's mum. Jasper upped and left one day and never came back. He was very old and had been poorly for a while. He was lovely with the longest claws and the biggest teeth I've ever seen on a moggy  :o

Lovely photos of Shelley & Fletcher - cats are funny aren't they, my Penny loves to follow me around the garden and Poppy can often be found lounging on one of my pots ;D

You remember well MM - they are 13 years old now and yes Heldi, they have always been together.  Here is a photo of them when we first got them snuggled up together in the bed.  Apologies for the quality of the photo but it was pre-digi camera.

Oh bless them Gardengirl, irresistible little darlings.  :)

Pink suits them Georgie, and very typical pose for most cats, after all it's what they do best  ;)
I've got a frog in the greenhouse.  I worry about it as it gets so hot in there some days (it's just a little 6x6) but it seems happy enough.  Told it off yesterday for not eating a huge slug I found in the process of eating a tomato :o

Heldi I'm sorry about Jasper, always sad when you lose a puddie  :'(

Do any of you know of a really good and effective way to discourage a cat.  The reason I ask is  Merlin is frequently beaten up by one particular cat.  He limps back home and luckily so far it has only meant one trip to the vet.  I don't want to take him everytime if I can help it as they usually give anti-biotics and I think if too many are given then after time they just don't work very well.  He feels a bit under the weather for a day or so then he's back to his old self.
Yesterday morning the cat had a go in our back garden and Toby-dog and I rushed to the rescue, but even so he had a puncture in his leg and then in the evening it happened again but in a neighbours front garden.
Normally cats make a lot of noise before actually fighting or so I thought.  Not this cat, he's straight in there.
So Merlin says help all you puddie cat lovers

A hose or pressurised spray put on jet.  Hang around, everytime it approaches Merlin, blast it - it might soon get the message.

Alternativel, dress Merlin up in armour and then cover him with hawthorn branches  ;D

Post by: Merlins Mum on August 08, 2005, 19:04:57
Thanks RC, infact this morning it was all set to have yet another go at Merlin and I shooed it off but the little or should that be big bu**er just looked at me, obviously terrified!  Anyway I got the hose going, it has a pressure squirty thing as one of the options and that shifted him.  This is OK when it's happening in the garden but when it's further a field that's a different story.  It is a worry as I don't want Merlin to get so he won't go out.
The thing with cats is, there's always a top cat but this one seems to be really singling Merlin out, he really doesn't like him for some reason. :(

When Spook started to go out he was picked on an awful lot.Especially by the scraggy tomcat who doesn't seem to belong to anyone. Spook can't hear any warning hisses or wails so did not back down any.  For a few weeks he came back battered, scratched and probably bruised. Big chunks of fur missing all that sort of thing.I was wondering about the merits of letting him go out.Now I find the same cat comes looking for him but they sit together and make little purry mews.  (Until Cassie come out and takes great exception to another blinking cat in the garden...one is enough for her to bear!).

It's a difficult situation MM. I guess you'll have to continue with the watering of the bully and keep your fingers crossed that Merlin gets out of trouble when he is further afield.  Merlin might wise up and lure bully back for a good hose down!

["Merlin might wise up and lure bully back for a good hose down!"]

Heldi that would be great if he could.
This cat started bullying him about a year back but now it is happening more often.
I will have to have a serious talk with Merlin I think  ;)

Anyway I'm pleased Spook has made friends with the local bully.

Poor Merlin  :(. He's a lover not a fighter!  Make him a little furry suit with big padded muscles underneath! :D

I wonder what is going on with this other cat? I don't know what you can do about it.

I'm not sure sure about Spook being pals with the local ruffian. Scraggy now comes in and pees up my pots!!  ::)

I do like the idea of the little furry suit.  of course since I've had the hose pipe at the ready, unwound so I can move quicker with it :D he hasn't ventured into our garden.  OH was not amused the other night when he tripped over the hose. ::)

Hello cat lovers.  Three of my friends and I all have our birthdays in August and September and we go out for a meal to celebrate.  By way of gifts, I was thinking this year of sponsoring a cat for each of them via the Cats' Protection scheme.  I'd pay the the yearly fee and they would get the certificate, photo and occasional update on the cat's progress.  If you were my cat loving friend, would you like this as a gift or would you think it was a bit naff?  Please be honest.  I'm in two minds, I really am.

I'd think that was great, honest I would.
I had a friend who loved elephants and one Christmas gave her a fostering pack for a baby elephant that had been saved from near death.  she loved it, so much so, every Christmas after that I renewed it.  sadly the friend died some years ago but I know the little elephant with a mid year update on it's progress gave her a lot of pleasure.

I think animal adoption gifts are fab.  I've had a humpback whale adopted for me and my mum adopted a reindeer for my son for his Christmas pressie. We have to go up to the Cairngorms sometime to meet it!

I would be very chuffed to have any animal adopted on my behalf so I think your idea is a very good one Georgie.  ;D

Hi Littlegem. We were up in Scotland in early February. We were on our way to Loch Ness and stopped at a garage to refuel. When we got home (northumberland) my son's bumph about his reindeer had arrived. It turned out we'd only been about six miles from the reindeer centre when we'd been at the garage lol! Darn it! They bring some reindeer down to the stables but if you pre arrange a visit they can take you  up into the cairngorms to see the herd. That is what we'd like to do.

I've been up Scarfell and Helvellyn ! Haven't done any others.

Hi Baggy. The oily patch was finally  coming off Spook and he was beginning to look clean again, only he went out and got another patch further down his back and then yesterday he came in with a watery brown stuff all over his back. I haven't a clue what it was and dread to think! He seems to have managed to clean most of that off ,or maybe it has gone because he has been out in the rain.  He isn't really very good at washing and rarely ever does... unless its his bits!

Ah but I can see what is left of the oil...the slight grey shading down his back. Normally there is nothing but white, unless ofcourse he's been out under the cars or has got a bit dusty...he then has a sort of yellowy tinge!

He is very happy right now...just had a bit of fish. :)

In a word...nope!  Actually I've only come across them this year after seeing them in the garden centre earlier in the season.  I'm led to believe that you propagate by cuttings as  seeds aren't available.  I have absolutely no other  knowledge about them.I bought it on the spur of the moment and haven't made any effort to find out anything about the plant.  I have seen them in a great many displays around and about and there are some other colours available, some two tone. Not that I am advocating nicking a cutting here and there ofcourse!

By the way for those who are aware of the Merlin adoption story, we weighed him last night.  He is now 5 1/2 kilos and has grown all his fur back on his belly so he looks like a posh mog now.  Are we over feeding him or is he just happy since he moved in ?

I was wondering about Claude, so I'm glad you asked Baggy. ;)

So your Merlin is 5 1/2 kilos, that means I'll have to weigh my Merlin to see what he is.  I wouldn't have said it was too much as he looks quite a long cat.  Just done a quick conversion,  12lbs, nah that sounds OK to me :)

Oh Georgie bless them both.
Toby-dog always find trimming trees and hedges exhausting, obviously supervising is more tiring than actually doing the job  :)

Merlin wants you to know that catmint always needs trimming but he has a wicked mum who covers his plant with an upside down hanging basket  :(

It's true, I admit it, but if I didn't there would be no catmint, it would be trimmed to ground level, so the basket protects it from over zealous paws.  Mind you it never flowers, just doesn't get the change. ::)

Hi MM   :)

Our local branch of the CP has a homing officer, I'm not sure if we have a centre, as such.  Unfortunately all the birthday gals have not been able to meet up to swap gifts because one has been wisked away for a surprise holiday by her OH.  So we're hoping to have a meal in early October now.

Here's a joke of sorts, just uttered by my OH.  He asked me if I knew that the CP shop down the road had been taken over by gangsters.  Knowing there was going to be a dreadful punch line I said oh really?  And he said yes, it's called the Cats Protection Racket.   ::) ::) ::)

I can add to this thread now as we've recently become proud owners of a rescue cat called Poppy, here's a picture below. When Poppy came home with us a black cat who we've now named Archie decided that he wanted to come and live with us so now we have two cats. I'm still to take a photo of Archie but he's a beautiful pure black cat who has a purr as loud as a lion, he eats a lot too!

Here's Poppy :D

What lovely cats!!
I had a rescue cat called George, loved him to bits. He was a bit perculiar and kept bumping into things...I took him to the vets, and was told he was as blind as a bat....but he was wonderful...soon got to know his way around the house, though bumped into hoovers and things when I forgot to put them away... He'd sit at my feet and wait to be lifted up.... He was so funny. The water tank bust in the loft and poured onto my bed, so I had to remove the bed...George used to wander round where the bed was!! In a perfect rectangle.....
One day, some visitors left the door open, and he got out...found him 5 doors up in a neighbours garden, not alive  :'(....he was magik!

He's an absolute pest.  We have laminate flooring thoughout the whole dowstairs and he keeps us awake by chasing anything that he can swick across the floor and thundering up and down the stairs.  We had him a year on Christmas eve and he has got so much personality - still wont sit on your lap but enjoys a good scratch under the chin.
He has gained a lot of weight since we had him and his fur looks the real deal whereas it was a bit sparse when he came from his old home (if you remember he had taken a overnight dislike to the cat he was living with).  You could see the skin on his belly and back legs but not any more.  He also used to look like a moggy but he has filled out to BSH shape i.e. - fat  :)

Post by: Merlins Mum on January 01, 2006, 20:59:03
joji, the problem is merlin is spoilt rotten.  he would probably take to a kitten more easily but if I had another cat I would get a rescue cat (as merlin was) rather than a kitten.  we had a little girl cat (stray) turn up in our road last year and I ended up feeding her.  merlin didn't take to her at all although she wanted to be friends.  In the end I took her to the Blue Cross as I couldn't find a home for her.  I wasn't prepared to put his nose out of joint.  but maybe one day a little homeless cat will come along that he is prepared to welcome into his home!

Georgie knows me so well, what a gorgeous cat, well they both are, in fact I think all cats are but I do have a soft spot for tabby cats.

Glowworm, when you have clicked to reply, a box will appear for you to write your dialogue.  Under this box, just to the left you will find "Additional Options".  When you click that, the browse box will be there.

Have you paid your £10 to Dan yet to allow your pictures to be posted?

Pauline - maybe it's because I'm a newbie and don't know any better - but damned if I can see the 'browse' facility.

When I click Additional Options all I get are 3 choices to tick off... 'Notify me of Replies' -- 'Return to this topic' -- and 'Don't use smileys'.

Incidentally, is it just me - or is everyone else stuck with the same defective gear here... ?

When I type out a post and click 'Preview' to check it out - I am then not able to make any corrections. And then when I click 'Post' to send it onto the board nothing happens... ?

The only way I've managed so far is to write out a post - make a copy with my copy-and-paste facility - and then if I see I want to make any corrections I open up a new dialogue box and paste my copy into that... which then will accept corrections from me... and will post off to the board.

If I just type out a post with no corrections whatsoever and no checking it with the 'Preview' facility - it will go straight onto the board if I click 'Post'.

Lovely moggies everyone.

Georgie I can't believe the size of Tiger,he looks huge! Lovely lovely lovely !

I keep having secret thoughts of how I could accidently get a hearing pal for Spook. I'd have to be underhand as OH wouldn't go for another cat but I think it would be good for Spook. I don't think Cass the dog would be impressed either but she'd get used to it,I think she quietly likes Spook even though he's a cat.   ;D

Post by: Georgie on January 11, 2006, 20:44:13
Awww John, he's such a handsome cat,  how could you?   ;)

Heldi, Tiger is 5.5kg of pure (mainly  ;)) muscle.  He was starving when he adopted us so we did spoil him a bit, I must admit.  Vet says he could do with shedding a few pounds now, so I play with him (Tiger, not the vet!) every day.  At first he was terrified of even paper balls but his confidence is growing and he's beginning to learn that he's supposed to chase the ball, not just bat it for me to chase.   :D  I think he's having his first kittenhood now and he's getting more playful by the day.  But his claws are like Archie's so I have to be careful.

I am pleased, it's great when you give someone something they really like.  I give to the CP on a regular basis but I haven't sponsored a cat.  I do 'foster' an elephant, a tiger and a pair of snow leopards through Care for the Wild.  And for Christmas someone gave me a years fostering of a donkey called Cleo.  She's in Lincolnshire and we will visit her when we go up for a weeks holiday.

Does anyone else have "helpful" cats?

Yesterday no 1, going on 7, who likes to keep me company when I'm working at the PC spent most of the day curled up with his bum on th ekeyboard.  Hard to get at the shift and control keys!

No 3, 15 months, decided I couldn't possibly cut out my new top and skirt without a helping paw placing the pattern sheets and fiddling in the pin pot and when I finally started sewing and needed to press seams, no 3, 27 months, decided the ironing board needed warming up first and went to sleep on it.

Very helpful the lot of them!
Title: Re: Gardeners and their cats
Post by: Merlins Mum on January 13, 2006, 11:06:03
oh yes Merlin tries to be helpful  ::)
He's been known to help me with cutting out patterns, usually by getting underneath the material.  And when it comes to reading a magazine or paper he either sits on it facing me with a grin on his face or gets between me and what I'm reading then leans against me and pretends to read  ::)
Don't we just love 'em  one and all :)

MM
Title: Re: Gardeners and their cats
Post by: Georgie on January 13, 2006, 23:07:57
Ahh, yes, I recognise that level of helpfulness.  Shelley likes to help me with the crossword.  She sits right in the middle of it and looks at me as if to say well you were stuck, weren't you?  Tiger on the other hand feels sorry for me when I (and this is not very often I must admit!) clean the kitchen floor.  He can't understand where the cat prints have gone so he helpfully walks across the wet grass and puts them back.

Aw MM he is lovely. Such strong looking arms. Hee hee.

Merlin is gorgeous.

Georgie I will have to be sneaky about getting another cat. I might have to pretend it just turned up or something. Haven't worked it out yet.

Obbelixx, Spook tries to help with diy or any sort of repairs. He ended up in the space between the upstairs floor and the downstairs ceiling the other day when OH was "fixing" a water tank/heating/plumbing problem. We ended up with water coming through the ceiling. It set the smoke alarms off, which set my daughter off crying and we couldn't call Spook back.  He gets too involved and has nearly come a cropper on the end of some tool or electrical device many times. OH now does a full house search for him before he starts a job so he can lock him in a room. For his own safety and OH's stress levels!

Georgie, I packed him up and posted him off this morning, they have promised next day delivery, so should be with you first thing! ;D

Heldi, when we first had Merlin 6 years ago he wouldn't play at all.  Gradually with lots of encouragement from me he has learnt what play means.  Now he'll go to his toy box and pull it off the shelf and start to play with the various mice that he has, but of course he does have a favourite.  Then yesterday morning to my delight he started to play with one of the balls he has.  He has never done this before not even if you rolled one up to him and when we had gone to bed I could hear him downstairs playing again with it.  My previous cat loved playing with a ping-pong ball and would pick it up in his front paws.   I will try to find one of Chivers
Thanks for the quick lesson on posting pics. No stopping me now  ::)

Why do stray cats love us gardeners?-I am now feeding four mouths-Cleo and Rags(home girls) plus `Bertrum`-a timid tom,and `Mitzie`-a fiesty quean-all the girls seem to have the hots for Bertrum(ha ha-they are never at risk) Mitzie and Cleo get on OK but raggy Baggy gets quite cross when Mitzie is around.

We mere humans can never understand cats-but they sure do enrich our lives

After three months of feeding a very nervous grey & white stray tomcat, we finally got him in the house. Big panic, but with a bit of gentle restraining he eventually figured that the cat-flap was the way out, and not the glazed top of the door (gulp). One month on, and he'd come into the house as soon as we called, would feed at the bowls the rest of the mob use, then head out when he was ready.

We thought he'd got it made. Just a few more weeks and he'd join the clan. Bit of up-close human contact & TLC and there's one gentle cat.

Since then he's had:

- a foot injury (vets)
- neutered (vets)
- post-neuter bleed (emergency vets) and re-tie of blood vessels. Nice new splatter design on carpet.
- foot abscess (vets)

...then he disappeared for 36 hours, and reappeared on the sofa. Phew. Nope. Not Phew. At all. Tried to follow me down the corridor. Tail dragging. Tried to use the litter tray. Nothing coming out. Started to quiver. Oh ****. Emergency vets. Again. Sedation, catheter, x-rays, enema, drugs. Spinal injury. Legs okay, tail not okay, bladder & bowel dubious. Hospitalised. Wait. Catheter out after about 3 days. Wait some more. Litter-wise, things start working again - spinal shock (big phew), not knackered nerves.

Home & confined to barracks, with drugs... He recovers and, naturally, for an outdoor cat, starts going stir crazy. The pills go down, my fingers don't get chomped as much. He gets distressed every time he can't see anyone he knows - must have thought he was getting dumped at the vets - the wailing at night reaches appalling levels (when he's shut up in the spare room)... eventually we can't take it anymore, have to camp on cushions on the floor... he immediately shuts-up, starts purring, chirruping, and gets under the duvet too. Good Grief. He's with the larks before the dawn chorus (4 a.m.) and wants out! out! out! Not allowed! AAARRRRGGGHHH.

Can't have his tail amputated for another week (going for the Manx 'look')... now the cat's fine - apart from the dragging tail and some tenderness over the hips - but the rest of us are entering the twilight sleep deprivation zone.

But he's a beautiful lad, and we wouldn't have it any other way... it's been a while since we've had a chirrupping cat, and he's got a gorgeous temperament. Roll on the next 2 weeks.

Title: Allotment Cat Mystery?
Post by: paddyx on July 08, 2006, 22:12:20
I've spent a happy half hour looking through this thread! We aren't allowed a cat in our flat (though my GF is working on trying to persuade the landlady!) and Gobbolino, her grey-and-white 3-legger has to stay up in Scarborough rather than joining us in Bristol.
However, shortly after getting our allotment, I saw a fluffy grey-and-white cat - I didn't see it again but, from then on, we've been visited by a friendly tortoiseshell almost every time we go up.
Here are some pics of it from my blog:
http://www.floppycat.com/paddyblog/index.php?id=760
http://www.floppycat.com/paddyblog/index.php?id=761
http://www.floppycat.com/paddyblog/index.php?id=762
http://www.floppycat.com/paddyblog/index.php?id=763

One theory is that the grey cat was checking us out on behalf of the tortoiseshell. Another one is that the field manager is a were-cat, because the cat always appears just after he's left the field!
It's a well-trained cat - it's careful not to tread on our plants, though it tries to rub itself on the can while I'm watering, or on my hand whilst I'm chopping slugs: I have to be careful not to drench or stab it!
Happy gardening and catting. (I wish they ate slugs and pigeons rather than songbirds)
- Paddyx

I have a cat called Kylie and she is 16 years old.   She was never a very friendly cat and was adopted by my Mum when she was 2 years old.  My Mum loved her very much but was not over demonstrative with physical contact.  They both came to live with me in 1998 and just before Mum passed away in 2002, she was always asking if I would take care of Kylie should anything happen to her.  There was no question about Kylie's future for I was pleased to continue to look after her.  She became more affectionate and I am now able to pick her up and cradle her like a baby.   ;D

The first photo was taken a year or so back and the second one today.  Kylie seems to have aged quite a bit inbetween but only to be expected.   She has a good appetite and can still get around.  She doesn't go very far these days and I can always see her from the house.

The last photo is of Kylie having a cuddle from Meggie.  ;D   ;D

Paulines7, Spook would never be so naughty as to eat a rabbit, ahem. ;D  I think if a rabbit is part of the family then the family cat generally seem to view them differently to those they find wild, well mine did thankfully.  In fact they used to play in the garden together, it was lovely to watch :)

He does play with the rabbit ! I've watched him and he is very soft,no claws out and he tumbles about with her...in that pen! I don't let the rabbit wander too much as there are plants poisoness to her. I reckon the rabbit would give him a nasty bite if he got too much for her. She goes up to him first though, everytime!  Wouldn't trust Spook with the guinea pig ,he gets to have a sniff of him when Sweets comes indoors but that's all.

For all Spook is really mean to the dog...jumping on her when she isn't looking and that sort of thing,he really misses her when she goes away on her hols when we go camping. He looked really lost without her last weekend, she was only away two nights and we were back the first night because of midgey attacks. Dog doesn't care a jot though.she loves going away, she gets to play out all day and only has to go into the kennel last thing at night, infact she comes home for a rest! When Spook sees her,he jumps on her!  Funny how attached to each other they get  :)

you're right katy, although I hadn't thought about it until now.  our dog is really white/grey on his nose and head but it's never happened to our cats.  although my mother in law had a cat that sort of generally faded from a rich brown to a paler duller brown but then she was 22 when she died!

Merlin to Tiger, Merlin to Tiger.  Have patches just like that but there is some that desperately needs cutting.  But I don't mind as sometimes you can find a little toad underneath :)  Mum says I mustn't hurt them as they are a gardeners friend.  I'm not that interested in them tbh as they don't leap about like frogs do :o

O goodness butterflies can be very dangerous if not tackled correctly and really they are hardly worth the trouble as there isn't much of a meal in one ::)
As for the sparrow, well it just sort of happened, that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it :)
Wood pgeons can be easier to catch than sparrows as they can take so long to get into the air.  I have just been practicing my climbing skills on one of the apple trees but I ran inside when the man next door came along in his 4x4.  I'm off for a snooze now, meow meow

Hi there - just found out there was a cat thread!  I'd love to show off my two but can't seem to post pictures - I'll persevere though  :)  .  Anyway, there's a silvery tabby called Willow (a girl, peculiar - loves getting stroked and cuddled on the bed but a bit stand-offish elsewhere) and a very pale ginger called Barley (a boy, confident, vocal, small and just discovered catmint so that plant's days are now numbered!).  They're both almost a year old and love the garden - unfortunately have also recently discovered next door's garden and am worried they have probably moved most of their toilet areas into there now - neighbours claiming to be OK about it for now but I have said it's OK for them to shoo them off if they want to :)

Cheers, Iain

Oh Iain, Willow and Barley sound delightful.  I do hope you manage to post some pics soon - there's lots of advice about how to do it dotted around the boards but basically you either pay Dan for the option of posting pics here (via the PayPal button at the top of this page), or you need a host site such as Photobucket.

Thanks Heldi, the garden's not bad but I have plans for it and next year I hope to be able to grow a lot of veg too.  Perhaps Merlin in the second pic is thinking "I thought we were going to have some hens" ;D

Ian D, it's easier to pay Dan as posting pics then is really easy, well it must be cos I can do it.  As for the catmint, the only way I can save a plant from Merlin is put an upside down hanging basket over it, that way the poor thing has some protection and Merlin can still enjoy nibbling the plant ::)

MM

Dear Tiger, you will be pleased to know that I am now free to come and go as I please although mum does insist I'm in at night ::)  I expect if I refused to come in of an evening she wouldn't worry quite as much as when we lived at our old house. But tbh I like to share their comfy bed and snuggle up to mum when it's a bit cold.
You have to be quick to catch a dandylion seed when it's gusty but be careful of bees and wasps as they can sting and I have always been told I should leave bees alone as they are good for the garden.  Have you tried pouncing on a butterfly when it's sunbathing?

I am not impressed with your photo.  Where's the one with the chicken in your mouth?  I also notice that your human has tried the wire basket over the catnip trick.  Surely you have worked that one out or are you a soft northerner now?  BTW, I tried your advice re the butterflies and got a severe ticking off.   :(  However, my human doesn't seem to mind me chasing and eating craneflies and that's great sport around here right now.  ;D  Do you get anything to eat up there?

I hope Merlin and Tiger are better behaved than Joshua's two cats. They have made a real mess of a post which is part of the new fence that has been put up. Scratching post? Looking at the post you would think a tiger (real thing) has been on the loose.

sshh. Sorry Tiger, I thought you were dosing and wouldn't hear me. I will get a photo of Joshua's cats. One is called Laura and the other one is Alfie. Alfie sits on my window sill and looks through the window just to torment Elsa.. If Lorna is round here too long chatting they are both sitting on the mat in my front porch waiting for her!!

Being the nice cat that I am I will forgive you this once.   ;)  If my mum goes out then I dive out the cat flap, scramble over the fence and sit at the end of the drive guarding the house until she comes home.  (Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.)  Shelley says it is because I'm a mummy's boy and I can't stand it if she goes anywhere out of my sight but what do girl cats know?

Looking forward to seeing a pic of Joshua's two cats Lorna :)

Well spotted Tiger but I am afraid I am Catnip-less and the basket is covering an area where mum put in some bluebell bulbs.  I mean would I dig them up, tsk.  I think there is much more chance of those marauding hens digging them up than me.  I mean you should see the mess they make and what does Mum do, she chats away to them and tells them they are clever when they lay an egg.  Am I missing something or aren't hens supposed to lay eggs ::)  Well our lot aren't over generous with them, we don't even get one a day but Mum says we should be happy that they are at last living a more natural life and able to enjoy the freedom of pottering around the garden.  Pottering around the garden ::) more like digging it up.  Hmm hens ::)  Not well behaved like us cats.
O yes loads of craneflies up here in the North but I find there dangly legs a bit of a pain.  As for butterflies, you must pounce when the humans aren't watching.  I got told off the other day for playing with a grasshopper.  No sense of fun, but that's humans for you.  It's a cross we cats have to bear!

Hi again Merlin.  I'm sure my Mum still has some catnip seeds if you could send her your new address?  Pah, only squirrels eat bluebell bulbs to my knowledge and they are stupid creatures, bit like humans really.   Sorry you also having to put up with daft hens - you can always come here for a break you know.   ;D

Dear Tiger
Humans have their strong points - your mum is planning to get some lovely puddy play-doh and spread it all over the garden so you can enjoy rearranging it. Nice and clean on the paws. Watch out for the bag marked Strulch ;)

Dear Aunty SS

Thanks for the tip off.  Mum has seed catalogues all over the table and I was thinking about attacking them and clawing them to bits like I sometimes do to her newspaper.  Perhaps I'll think again now.

Does anyone want a 1/2 pedigree Maine Coon kitten?

'Mummy Morgan' comes from a line of prize-winning cats from
Kadacoon pedigree. She's brown tabby and has just had her 2nd litter of kittens - fathered by the local 'Chav-Cat'!

Please PM me if you would like one! I'm in Nottingham and the kittens are half-way up the curtains.

10 weeks old on 5th November.
