I have opened a support ticket with the host - things have been pretty bad on and off for a few days - let us see if they have an answer.

I've been struggling too.  very slow indeed!

"Page could not be displayed" sign kept popping up for the first half hour at 8.30 this morning and now I'm waiting on average 13seconds for a page to open and close...very frustrating.

This site appears identical to our A4A and zips through, I was wondering if they could offer any clues to solve the problem? http://www.takingthelead.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl

Roy,

Sods law, but I've just tried to view the other site and it is down!

I have spoken to the hosts of this website, and they are taking action against some of there other customers tonight who are abusing the servers.

Everything should be allot better tomorrow.

Cheers

I've just got into http://www.takingthelead.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl.

The forum 'over there' is much smaller than ours - they only have 3 people on line at the moment, we have over 30 at the minute.

I will however get in touch with the admin and ask who they host with.

Cheers

Hi
I am the admin of the Taking the Lead site - I have pm'd Dan with all the information - not that I wanted it to be a secret but until I started to nosy round your forum - I never realised there was a thread on the problem.

My reply was a little lengthy so I will not repeat it again but I am sure that Dan will read it shortly.

By the way this is a great forum and its success is due to the contributions by the members - keep it up - well done
John    ;)

Thank you John for offering help, much appreciated, this is an exciting and vibrant site for allotmenteers young and old and speed is of the essence for knowledge gained so we can crack on with the growing of our veggies at this time of year. ;D

I am a newbie to your site http://www.takingthelead.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl and have gained a lot of help in my short time of owning a puppy (they don't stay puppies for long ::)) and enjoyed the banter and the fun photo's.

There's a lot of topics on this site that go back a long way - I've found a lot with threads going back 13 months or so. I'd set them to only go back, say, 10 months very maximum. Preferrably 6 months - particularly the gallery which, naturally, has lots of pics. Also the host sever will make a difference
Title: Re: SOOOOOO Slooooooooooooow
Post by: Admin aka Dan on March 22, 2005, 15:50:53
The forum history should not make a difference, the software used for the site, SMF is very efficient, as is the SQL backed which holds all the posts.

The issue is the host - I have been in contact with them, and they have assured me things should improve very soon.

As some of you will know we are on our 6th host, and the ones we are with now are by far the best (apart from lewismedia - but they stopped providing hosting services!), I am loathe to leave the current hosts, only to find ourselves in a worse position.

But the situation is being closely monitored, and if things do not improve very soon then ....

I have given up twice today already, almost gave up just now but i shall try and persevere.  Other websites seem to be OK Dan, do not want to cause you any headaches maybe it is just a small glitch and will sort itself out.

Well I have spent the day (in between gardening) hopping from one site to another and I have to say that they are all about the same speed. Mind I am usually playing Patience while waiting for pages to load so I may not notice exactly how long it does take to load uo. ;D

Not as of yet Roy,  there was a problem tonight which resulted in the whole site bing down for half an hour.

The speed here is much improved now, is it no better for you?

Marianne,

www.takingthelead.co.uk and www.allotments4all.co.uk are totally unrelated!

Roy was just pointing out another site he used to compare the speed of the sites.

Not only is it slow on and off for me, but I am having frequent troubles even getting into the site, and at the moment I cannot access recipes 4 all.  I end up having to google allotments 4 all and access the site thataway.  Have never had it as bad as it is for me at the moment.

I would like to join the moaners and voice the fact that especially today, with all the works AND broadband, I could not access the site.

It churned out and churned to "page unavailable" or something similar... ::) :o

I was about to say how nicely things are going over the past day or two, but didn't want to break the spell, I was unable to get on here during the day for other reasons so can't comment but tonight I had to go via Google to get in.

Shame really because things are coming together and at speed at times.

You are so close Dan, keep up the good work. ;)

When you can not get in,

Are you typing www.allotments4all.co.uk in the address bar or using a bookmark ?

If a bookmark, could you let me know to what page it points ?

Cheers

Hi Dan,

Sometimes a bookmark, sometimes typing in the URL.  both similar results.

The little black bar goes up ever so slowly and then "Page unavailable".

Very odd Roy,

I have a monitor constantly looking at the server performance, and looking at today shown in the graph below, you can see a definite hitch at around 9/10.

Note that this monitor runs over the internet, not on the server itself.

I will ask the people who host the site to have a look and see what happened.

Cheers

Dan

I'm really really sorry to have to say that yesterday I logged in  to find stacked PMs waiting. Managed to reply to ONE only, cos then real-life took over & I was time-expired here :(

Logged on early this morning, but had to abandon the attempt.

Logged on here later this morning & there was little difference. Managed to read rest of PMs & mail privately to another.

Logged on just now & have (successfully! hurray!!!!) responded to 2 threads. But waited an age for this thread here to load to log my experiences. :(

So sorry, Dan, but it's really not working for me at the times I can be here.

Anyone wishing to mail me, please,  contact Tim, Eric, Ina or Rosebud, who have my Hotmail addy & can pass it on.

Meanwhile, as I can't even access threads already posted, particularly if they're 3 pages long & contain pix, in a reasonable time-frame for me, I'm (reluctantly) off to pastures new until things clear here. - Regards, 'Lishka

On the 10/04/05 @ 0830 to 0835 I waited 5 minutes to turn a page and gave up, 92 seconds was my previous record on 25/3/05.

I really thought everything was sorted now but it's back with avengence :o

I could not even get into this thread earlier, it took me to the dreaded "This page cannot be displayed" - Hence my Mark II posting.

It has just taken me about 4 minutes to get here - Let's hope our host can find the source of this problem.

I'm sorry to hear that people are having problems.  I've been using the A4A site for half an hour this morning with no problems.  Does it have anything to do with the amount of people that are on the site at once.

Looking at the frequency of problems, it does not appear to be to bad.

Now before you all scream at your monitors, let me explain what I mean.

All websites cost someone money to run, and the more you pay for hosting, the more reliable service you get (as a rule).

You can go from free hosting on yahoo (or similar) with very restrictive policies on what you can do, to managed dedicated servers - costing many thousands of pounds a year.

We are hosted on a well respected host, rochen, who whilst having some problems, deal with them quickly, and charge a reasonable amount, they are not the cheapest, or the most expensive!

In the past we have been with, u-net, easily, lewismedia, ixhosting and some others I can not remember.  Some of these hosts resulted in the website falling over more than once a day!  Others where excellent, and I only with we could have stayed with lewismedia, but they stopped hosting.

I hope that makes sense, and I am looking for a better way of hosting the website, but at the moment I think our current home is a good balance between cost and performance.

Cheers

Dan
