Title: Verbena bonariensis Lollipop
Post by: Jayb on April 02, 2014, 14:55:14
Does anyone know if this comes true from seed or can it only be propagated by cuttings?

I have grown 'ordinary' bonariensis from seed but don't know about 'lollipop'..suppose if it is available as seed, then it should 'do what it says in a packet'.
Have you already got the plant itself?

I just googled the lollipop... "This new plant is propagated by cuttings commercially under licence from the plant breeder, so it is very uniform and identical to the parent plant - See more at: http://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/verbena-bonariensis-lollipop/classid.2000017445/#sthash.kbpOhxYA.dpuf"

You probably would end up with some % of seedlings that would be indentical for the original..and rest between lollipop and 'normal' bonariensis.  Are you going to 'play' with lots of seedlings? :toothy10:

Thanks Goodlife, I'll take a look at the link. I wasn't sure if it is because they are an F1 plant or just as it's new they are only releasing plants/plug plants.

I've got a small plant I overwintered from last year, it looks to be sprouting and I noticed quite a few seedlings germinating on the surface of the compost. Most look to be weeds but a few might be from Lollipop. Although if they are Verbenas they are likely crossed with the bigger sort which was growing other side of the garden. I was just wondering whether to save seed this year, the butterflies and bees adore them and it would be nice to have more of the short one growing too.

I would be if I could find the little packet of seeds I saved last year!

Yes, a mixture of types is what I thought also  :happy7:

For it being commercially propagated from cuttings...lollipop probably is lucky rogue seedling to start with..unless vegative propagation is more profitable...who knows.. :drunken_smilie:
As long as the plants are nice.. :icon_cheers:
