Title: Greenhouse glass replacement!
Post by: mamahanh on December 26, 2013, 21:53:30
Have just lost 24 panes of greenhouse glass in these last gales, along with 19 in the previous ones! Anyone recommend where to buy cheap polycarbonate or another alternative to glass please.
Thanks

Blimey, not good news.

Can't help with a source for replacement glass, but I'm sure someone can... Wish you the best of luck though.

Cheers

Dan

If you want standard horticultural glass check out your local free ads , ebay search locally or freecycle as you can often find them for free or very cheap where people dismantle greenhouses sell the glass and scrap the aluminium.

Also on ebay you will find polycarbonate in packs of ten sheets at a very reasonable price

We lost a few panes in the normal gh to.

But lost half the roof of this massive old free house we inherrited , was huge, we took the extra allotment on just because of it!!
Now the is glass everywhere and need to find someone to take all the metal windows away

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you think I can get away with putting glass and polycarbonate in the same green house?

Cleared the glass up today!

People do do that on our site. The polycarbonate tend to pop out sometimes.
We found with our greenhouses that the problem of glass breaking was due to slippage.
This happens because the greenhouse moves slightly in the wind forming a parallelogram shape and the clips then do not keep the panes in the correct position. We watched this happening and since then have added extra diagonal bracing to the greenhouses to keep them rigid. ( Most are supplied with a few diagonal braces but we found this insufficient, we got more aluminium bracing and added them and since then this has not occurred)
Also extra glazing clips to the ones supplied. Two wests and Elliot supply cropped bolts which can be used to add extra bracing without having to dismantle the greenhouse.

The best of both worlds is glass on the south side and polycarbonate on the north side for insulation.

It's better than going all-PC because PC doesn't let UV through and this can impact tropical plants (cacti really sulk under PC all year - except the jungle ones of course).

It's a great solution if you've just lost half your glass!

Cheers.

Just to say I took the advice and have now got polycarb fixed with silicone and glass in the greenhouse and it all seems to be a happy place at the mo  :sunny:
Thanks for the help.
