Title: What seeds are you sowing?
Post by: cestrian on February 16, 2013, 00:36:11
It looks like the snow has passed and the weather might be picking up. The evenings are definitely getting lighter! What seeds are you sowing and where - indoors on a window sill, in a cold frame or in the greenhouse?

The tomato challenge and other toms, peppers and cucumbers in the prop next week, small cabbage and calabrese will be in the unheated poly but covered, salad box in a polystyrene box are already sprouting. I've got ground warming up for early carrots, they will be under fleece and I will be starting some parsnips chitting . Then of course, there are the herbs  :toothy10:

I've got chillies, aubergines, leeks, spring onions and giant onions and cabbage
in the greenhouse.  I'll start some tomatoes next week.

The only things outside are broad beans which I sowed last November.

Onions, tomatoes, basil, indoor cukes, parsley, peppers - propogator to start, now on a sunny windowsill, as usual not enough room even though I'm giving aubergines a miss this year. Oh, and dahlias, coleus and morning glories altough I wasn't going to bother with flowers...it just somehow seems to happen!

I have not started my seeds yet I am waiting for it to warm up a little. I have a unheated greenhouse so I think it is a little cool for me to start just yet. I will be sowing my onions in early march. I normally sow them on march 3rd as I have always had a good crop when sown on that date. What I might try this year is to sow a week earlier and put them on my windowsill and see if that makes any difference.

I will be starting me seeds soon though. After I have ordered a few that is :P

Have onions cabbage cauli toms and lettuce going all in the greenhouse which is heated overnight at the moment. Interested to see some off you have started your cucumbers. I did start them early last year but lost them all (collapsed). Spoke to a local nursery about this and he told me this was due to the lack of sun with the weather being so wet and dismal. So left them till mid April and they were ok. The variety was carmen an indoor female type and I had some great results. Would be interested to know what cucumbers you guys are growing and if you experienced similar problems last year as myself.

tomatoes and leeks next week, little gem are up outside on a window cill and will prick out today. I already have onions, garlic, shallots and spring cabbage up and doing well . Chillis sown in a propagator in january are growing steadily indoors. I can`t think of anything else yet, too early for most stuff and anyway I am sowing far less this year as had far too much last year. Would like early carrots but they just do not grow well here on clay so am not bothering

Chilli peppers, sweet peppers, onions, cabbages, aubergines, chives, rocket, peas, sweet peas and banana shallot seeds. These are what I have been sowing last few weeks.
Outside I have garlic and overwintering onions growing steadily! :blob7:

Today I started the spring sowing (hurrah).. Maincrop onions of various types, three sorts of shallots (last years very successful Prisma and Banana have been joined by Camelot), some round carrots and radishes in bedding strips, two sorts of alpine strawberries, a couple of trays of the Broad Bean "Express" plus a rootrainer kit of the dwarf french bean "Speedie". They're all indoors on windowsills, and the French beans, strawberries, shallots adn some of the onions have heat under them too. THe speedie's will probably live their entire lives in troughs in the greenhouse, they're a bit of a gamble really this early in the year, but they are so fast I reckon it's worth a go...

I think you are right not to be in too much of a rush. Seedlings catch up quickly and grow away strongly but it's hard to hold them back and prevent them getting leggy if you sow too early. PD cold where I am.

Ground's been frozen for weeks and still was this weekend, temps of -1 & -2, bitterly cold so no plot of me. Watched rugby on Saturday but spent a few hours in the greenhouse on Sunday morning. Fired up the old propagator and sowed some celeriac, toms, chili peppers, peppers, onions, caulis & minicole cabbages. I love this time of year after the dormancy of Winter - could be a little warmer though ....

Unfortunately saving seeds from Picolino is a gamble, as it is an F1 hybrid and won't breed true.

Have never started calabrese this early.  How do you sow them?  Individual pots one per seed or prick out or?  Would like to start brassica earlier, but haven't had good experience and lost many through damping off.

I have just started on the peas in the frostfree conservatory, peppers are being moved into individual pots, parsley is up, tomatillo is up too.  Tomatoes in the next week or two.

Welcome Big Tomato.  I like your self watering seed system.  I use a lot of plastic bottles and love this new use.  I am due to do on holiday in May and will have some plants that are not ready to go outside and OH is not very reliable they are usually over watered or bone dry.

As my Romanian does not seem to be any good, I also used Google translate, but some words get missed so it can be a bit hit miss.  I can get the front page translated but do not seem to be able to find a way to get the others done.

Are you really sowing zucchini etc already?

I have sown parsley, calebrese, lettuce, leeks.  Trying early sowing of summer broccoli Sante.  Celery.  Chilli Peppers.

chillis are about 3 inches tall and strong, were sown in january. I did tomatoes and leeks a few days ago and little gem are sitting ok in a cold greenhouse after pricking out, I did those in january. Onions, garlic and shallots were autumn planted, so no worries there. Nothing else now, just waiting for longer days. Oh lady christi are slowly chitting. Two beds getting tidyied up today so slow and steady with me, no point in rushing things too  early. makes no difference in the end and I am not bothering with carrots on the allotment, they just don`t grow well in that clay soil, hasn`t been worth the effort. Oh yes aquadulce broad beans are thriving outside in root trainers, after sowing in january, will be ready to plant out in march, very strong plants

Sounds like I am way behind most of you, but yesterday I sowed my early nante carrots in my baths. Everyone says I'm too early but I found that the first sowings at this time do much better than later sowings. Well for me they do.. Sowed some carrots last year on 21 February and they were brilliant. After last years miserable weather it is taking me a while to get back in the mood. This year seems the aches and pains are getting to me as well. Good luck everyone..

Tomato seeds for cold greenhouse going in today - late but with this weather...  :tongue3:

Broadbeans are in - also late

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for enough good-weather days free to escape to the plot to keep the whole lot productive and tidy.

If the worst comes to the worst I'll just have to take my two very elderly parents down there for the day while I get on with it.  :glasses9:

Two weeks ago when we had the only two lovely days in March I sowed 4 trays of onion seed and I of shallots. Then a range of tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, basil and cape gooseberries.
The hope was by the end of March to have them in my unheated greenhouse!
Then winter returned with a vengeance with 9 inches of snow! Daily turning round my seedlings hoping that they don't get too leggy before the weather improves!

Me too.  Daily turning of seedlings and checking for new ones popping.  Reallly pushed for space indoors now I've had to pot on the toms.  Chillies, Christmas basil and PSB needs potting on.  Sweet peas pinched out already and waiting to go outside.

Summer savoury getting very leggy now and peas and PSB heading that way with hollyhocks and lupins following soon.  I need those to go out in the greenhouse asap so I can sow more stuff.

Seeds up in the poly are cauli, calabrese, sprout and cabbage. Small cabbage potted on and started romanesco, filderkraut cabbage and kalibos cabbage today. Loads of flowers coming up for the plant sale and we're not sure how long it will be until we can have one, usually first bank holiday in may but, this weather's putting us all behind  :happy7:

Chives, basil and toms on the kitchen windowsill are finally up now we've had a bit of sun, but no sign of parsley, coriander or peppers yet. Calabrese, leeks and a few broad beans up in the cold greenhouse, but parsnips and sweet peas doing nothing. Itching to sow more but nor sure what!

Toms on kitchen window cill, and peas not too bad, spinach was doing well then gave up.  French beans in outhouse have just rotted, have compost and seeds but am going to wait until next weekend when hopefully the weather will warm up.  Sweet peas from saved seed seem to have given up, so may have to buy some more.  Luckily I have overdosed on the seed buying so have plenty of spares.  I am little miss impatient.  Next time I buy a house, will make sure I have large window cills in every room, or a heated greenhouse, dream on.  Not sure that Dulce (beautiful cat) sleeping on the seed trays in the plastic greenhouse was a good idea, but maybe he warmed the soil up.

When we had a temperature of 10ish degrees a few weeks ago in March (I am not dreaming ) I sowed some cabbage Golden Acre, some Brussels sprouts , some lettuce some leeks and some celeriac in one of those long window sill lidded propagators for Aldi.
All the seeds are now up the Brussels and the cabbage I getting a bit leggy but they are going to have to stay where they are for a week or so as the next home for my seedling is the unheated plastic green house in the garden. and I fear if they go in there whilst the weather is as it is they will be gone.

in the green house are some onion and shallot sets with are now sprouting little green shoots and some runner beans in kitchen roll holders they have germinated but the green part seems slow to show above the soil, I haven't really watered them much as I would hate for them to freeze. not sure if that's what they need?

heaps of flowers but most of them have been on the go for ages (years even) but as far as veggies go, leeks in greenhouse (freezing though), parsley, hopeful lettuce (outside) tomatoes (I was just so bored) not doing peppers (which is a slight relief this year) mange toute on plot, more sweet peas (I seem to have been obsessed with these - 19 varieties). Spring onions.
Put some black PVC down for potatoes.

Tomatoes - 2 batches, one up and pricked out, the other just done so still waiting
Sweet peppers - sown 2 weeks ago still no show
Broad beans - in modules in greenhouse, sown 2 weeks ago no show
peas - see broad beans
leeks - in a seed tray under glass, just done so just waiting to see
lettuces - 4/5 varieties, same as leeks

Mixed results. Dont get me started on flowers. Lots sown but so far only got few sweet peas (just) to show for it it.

I have sown the last of my maincrop brassicas indoors this week and they are up, I am sowing a few more red cabbage than usual re the potential weather-induced veg shortage, red drumhead stands up to a lot of adverse stuff and has a good tight head so is good wrt slug damage. Nothing fancy this year as it is going to be a toughie but tomatoes and chillis are being nurtured and I am getting them out into a cold greenhouse during the days now. I want them early, like last year, when I got 40kg from 19 plants, I dehydrated a lot. This year only 12 plants and only the hardies that did so well last year

A few more veg to go and that will be 2013 sorted

Carrots
Parsnips
Root Parsley
Beetroot
Peas and Mangetout

I can't be around to plant in the next few weeks - so it's early ... or late!

Tried to protect the peas from the mice by soaking them in strong chilli and garlic infused water before planting.

parsnips, turnips, 40 day turnips, short carrot, giant red carrot,
Bought seed from the real seed co.uk online (orders @realseeds.co.uk) this year for the first time. So far the rate of germination appears to about 98% on plantings in modules in the polytunnel, Brassicas various.

With a bit of luck this weekend I will be able to prepare the seedbed at long last (temps are at least no longer freezing!) and sow cabbage, romanesco, chard, leeks and salads. I will also try to do half a row (let's not get carried away! ) of early carrot and parsnips and turnips (unless the early sowings have finally showed through!). I might try to do some more peas if I have time, and I have some herb and flower seeds too that could be done - all under fleece and plastic of course!!!
Also have to get in the last spuds and some more spring onion sets.

My tomatoes were doing quite well in the kitchen on the window cill, hot in there, but I have moved them to the lean to, which gets very hot when the sun is out, but they don't look too happy, but hopefully they will be OK, after they have got over the shock.  Everything is very slow this year, the only thing that is coming up is my peas in pots, which I have just put in the plastic greenhouse (unheated, of course).  Well luckily I have plenty of seeds so can sow more when it really warms up.

courgettes and squash sown indoors today. It will be min 7 tonight so all seedlings and small plants will be able to stay either out or in unheated greenhouse and that includes tomatoes and chillis, which look very strong now. I must get to the allotment and clear a bed for parsnips.I believe that they like min 10 in the ground so I`ll cover with black weed fabric for a few days and perhaps sow 7-10 days after that.

Tbh, it has been a godsend for me to have the planning done last year for this year, including the numbers of plants that I want. Stopped me sowing too many seeds

I can hardly tell any difference if it has melted tad or not...it has FINALLY started to rain so perharps now the last of the snow drift piles will disappear. ENJOY!!??? :angry5:...I can hardly wait until next winter.. :tongue3: :angel11: No +20c over here..just 14 was promised for us..that's if the sun don't drown before that..

Anyhow..thats enough of the weather..I've been sowing some herb seeds.. :toothy10: pricking out some seedlings...potting up some scented geraniums...doing some cuttings...LOTS of compost therapy :icon_cheers: Soon is time to start over spilling the pots and trays into unheated GH..windowsills and floor don't take much more..I even have grow lamps wrigged up under the bed and some reflective panelling there too..to keep my tomato plants totally cosy.. :icon_cheers:

c'mon, goodlife, it will be a bit nicer and warm from next week as they say: have faith in our weather forecasters as they haven't been wrong so far this winter... :angel11:

my GH is 3/4 full already and the window tables (sills too narrow) will be filled up soon enough. seedlings still tiny though. have my tommies and chillis at friend's as they helped me start them off in their HM propagator (blown up now, so didn't last long!) so will have to reclaim them soon enough!

Absolutely no idea. I've got two 'energy saving type bulbs and they are on timers. I don't see any noticeable difference to my energy useage during these few months that they are switch on.
This sort of bulbs.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/45w-Blue-Spectrum-6400k-CFL-grow-light-lamp-bulb-ES-E27-/200497172938?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item2eae9011ca

I'll let you to do the running cost calculations...
edit to add; just noticed..there is some calculations sown on the page..

Lettuce, calabrese, rocket, Flakkee carrot, Telephone peas, spring onion, cucumber and coriander if it's warm enough.

Total re-sow of the beetroot, plus Aprils' sowing, and more Chantenay carrots if the last sowing doesn't show their faces soon. Roll on Monday, that's when I get busy.

haven't got my brain wired in to work out the costings. maybe they are cheaper than i thought they would be. i managed to save myself £300 just by having just 3 nights worth of gas fire on for the duration of the whole winter period (yes, i'm prone to  getting chilblains and contracted them 3x this year!)

That typo shows what my brain has been really thinking :glasses9: :icon_cheers:
I had good 'old' forage in my seedbox last night..sorting some seeds that I 'need' to sow next...and it was impossible job..just going through different brassica options resulted big pile of chosen packets.. :BangHead:..now I'm asking myself 'how many acres my allotment space was again?' :BangHead: (answer;not even a one)
And could I find a single packet of brussels???!! :BangHead:..thought that I had 'tons'..that means only one thing...SHOPPING! :icon_cheers:
Today is BIG sowing day..found so many things in box that I didn't 'remember' I 'need' to sow...kales, collards, cabbages, caulis, broccoli, more lettuce, cape gooseberries, more parsley, more basil, more coriander.. :icon_cheers:

A couple more peas, brassicas, mainly kales, and TPS. It was quite warm on the plot today, so I'm going to put some wrinkle-seeded peas in next.

Everything in my seed box tomorrow, some years out of date, but who cares.  Don't really want 320 broccoli plants.  Not planted at allotment yet, just in plastic greenhouse and lean to.  Tom seeds looking good.  :sunny:

flipping heck. It was sunny and windy and seedlings are fine outside in their root trainers then all of a sudden with no warning, hail with quite some force. I am so glad that most trainers were under enviromesh cages but not all. What dodgy weather again, so unlike april of past years. No gentle fine rain so far

I would say that all my seeds are sown now, beans in cold greenhouses and squash and courgettes indoors, only little sowings left like salad stuff. Looks as though this year will be an in/out year, particularly next weekend.

Same on my plot. I managed to put in Simpson's Special and Magnum Bonum, and plant some onion sets, with a few shallots mixed up with them. These were small sets I hadn't bothered to put in earlier, but which I then mistook for onions. The first peas I planted are starting to come up.

I planted turnips, spring onions, florence fennel and raddish today. First rows of peas, mangetout and sugar snap peas earlier in the week. All in the greenhouse at the moment.

Squash and courgette plants moved from the window sills to big pots in the greenhouse this week. Toms and chillis are still on the window sills, but getting a bit leggy. I may pot them up in the greenhouse at the weekend too.

I decided to bring all the bean seed trainers in the house today and they are on the floor, on warmth retaining stone tiles, in covered trays. It was just too cold last night and I am aware that they might rot and not germinate where they were, in a cold greenhouse. I have made space for all the tenders to come in at night, from tonight, for a few days at least. Warm sunny days = freezing nights at this time of year

Tricky year this year so beetroot seeds are in modules and even swedes, first time for me re swedes but they are in polythene pots that I can cut open to plant out

By the way I have numbers down to a fine art on my plot, thanks to my dt brown free trial of their planner. It is fantastic to use, so much so that I have bought the sub

It is a bit warmer here, more than 20deg this week, and no frost at least even if cooler at night. This weekend I will sow parsnips, tall peas and some Mangetout peas too, and keep sowing radish. I also need to get my seedbed finished and start to sow out the later crops: sprouts, pak choi, cabbage,  summer cauliflowers.
Indoors I think I will start off a couple of cucumbers and courgettes, to get a head start, and plant them out under cloche first week of May.
