Does anybody here by any chance have any to swap for something ? Or do you know source where to get it from?
I would love to grow some...another one of those 'tick the box..been there, done that' jobs.
And even better if I could get hold of 'non-commercial' variety seeds..but any really would do.
I would love to cook and taste it as veg and not to try to make some syryp..takes too much time and effort.

While you are at it, why not try for some mangle wurzles as well, great for winemaking!
Cheers, Tony.

I have an idea that Edwin Tucker do beet seeds though there is no sign of them on their website.
But as for eating them, have you turned into a horse? :toothy10:

Not quite yet.. :toothy10: I read it that it can be eaten by humans too so I thought I have to try at least...just to 'tick the box'.

OHHHH...cheers...bloody brilliant! :icon_cheers:

I grew Mangelworzel a few years ago. The top growth made great spinach/ beet leaves.
I cannot remember wether we ate any of the crop though.
Love the name Mangelworzel :happy7:
-
Have you seen the Wild sea beet that Thomas Etty sell?
-
Fodder beet although not quite so high in sugar is I think similar, only tasted fodder beet so can't be sure. Tuckers have some seed http://tuckers-seeds.com/index.php?route=product/search&keyword=fodder%20beet
Off to look at Thomas Etty and Wild sea beet :blob7:

I read somewhere that grated sugar beet amongst other root veg in a bake is really nice.....so then my mind started to wonder and....
I don't like beetroots and such unless they are pickled...its the earthy taste, yuck. So... I thought how I do like sweet pickled beetroot.....and thought of pickled sugar beet...and now I just have to test it and see how it would taste...or roasted sugarbeet, I do love honey roasted parsnips and carrots...so maybe it could work with sugar beet, though I doubt honey is anymore needed for that.
Never tried fodder beet or mangleworzel.... true...name is fabulous...so that will be in my 'to try before you die' list too.
One just have to experiment.. otherwise you never know what you might miss out..
I've got now couple sources for sugarbeet ...and if all goes well and they come...there might be few spare seeds to try for others too... :glasses9:
-
I've only tried fodder beet raw, definitely sweet tasting and similar taste to beetroot, maybe a bit of swede flavour mixed in too. I think it would be really quite sweet as a cooked veg. Good luck with your sugar beet foray, look forward to hearing how they taste.
Just a thought do they grow them around you it might be worth asking a local farmer if they have a couple to spare, you could get experimenting all the sooner!

Yes they do, not that far, but they are all lifted up now...and in past I've seen them stored in huge muddy piles on farmers yard...not that inviting..and particularly when I don't really know how they've grown. I'm bit funny of that issue...so idea is good, if I would know more the farm and their growing methods. Hey ho...its not that long to wait..it will be sowing time for those in few months time.. :icon_cheers:...and harvest later on this year...plenty of other things to eat and process before that (I hope) and as they say..time fly when you are having fun! :icon_cheers:
-
I've got some!... :icon_cheers: :toothy10: :hello2:(http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/smileys-and-emoticons/dancing/smileys-dancing-121746.gif)(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-dance015.gif) (http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/)

2 lots from different sources now! :icon_cheers:
I've been searching some recipes and other info about SB...and came across this.. "On regular consumption, sugar beets are a great source of energy and a natural aphrodisiac."
That'll do for me... :drunken_smilie:

Remember to leave the tops next winter for the Pink Foot Geese!!
As for the "other" properties- is that why you were so keen? :blob7:
-

NO...that's just added 'bonus' if it does anything.. :tongue3:
What's this 'pink foot geese' about ? ...will pink footed hen do same?
-
It's a type of wild goose.
-
Ah....well...wild or not..but none of those over here and if I don't eat the tops chickens will :icon_cheers:
-
The reference to Pink foot geese is because the farmers in Norfolk leave the tops for the Thousands of Pink foot geese- which come over from the scandanavian countries to overwinter- maybe you call them something different. To see them flying overhead is awe inspiring.

Hi  I'm looking for sugarbeet too, Good Life you said you found two sources ? It would be great if you could post the address's as I've only managed to find an American address. Happy growing :sunny:
-
Well..actually I ended up with 3 different sources :toothy10: But those were swaps, so I cannot pass any details.
One that I did buy is this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUGAR-BEET-SEEDS-Naturel-Anatolian-Sugar-Beet-100-seeds-ottomanseeds-/221203277604?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item3380be2724
...although from Turkey..there wasn't no problems with ordering or receiving the seeds....all went smoothly and quite quickly too.
-
That's brilliant goodlife, thankyou I'll order some now :icon_cheers:I'm really curious as to how the leaves are going to taste.... Happy growing :sunny:
-
I was going to grow the leaves for the chickens and the roots for myself... everyone for themselves...I should imagine the leaves are very much like chard (don't like those) so that's why I'm not going to even try the greenery
-
I just planted some Albino beets that I purchased from www.rareseeds.com . In the description, it mentions that they can be used to make sugar.
-
Goodlife, I'd be keen to hear how you got on with the sugarbeet. It's something I've though about in the past, but never got round to growing.
-
I'm glad to inform you that my first experience with SB has been success :icon_cheers:
I haven't had chance to try any roots though. I have bucket of roots dug up and waiting for me outside...so any time now I'm going to do little culinary 'adventure' and see how edible they are. Chickens were very happy with tops :icon_cheers:
My plan is to leave larger roots into ground and hopefully they will yield new lot of seeds later on.....
Growing itself wasn't anything different to beetroot...SB just need much wider spacing so both, thinning out and sowing very sparsely is necessary. I also made all the effort with ground preparation..and my roots truly has done well.
-
Sounds interesting. Perhaps those seeds will make it in to next year's seed parcel :-)
-
Are you aiming to make your own sugar?
Now all you need to do is build a multimillion pound plant to process it. :toothy10:

No, I'm not making it into sugar or syrup, but plan is to try it as vegetable and as 'sweetener' in food.. or amongst pickled beetroot etc.
As for the processing plant....well...I think if I cannot find time for apple crusher and press...venturing sugar manufacturing is out of question too..so little time in one life time... :drunken_smilie:
