Title: Another EU ban.
Post by: telboy on August 15, 2012, 17:49:12
This is probably old news to you well informed.
I read that Bordeux Mixture is for the chop 2014(?). Jesus wept, with blight so prolific this year, what are us poor suffering allotment holders gonna do?

I thought it was 2013 but yes it's on the way out.  Time to stock up!

Someone on here makes their own already - apparently it's better when it's freshly mixed? Can't remember the recipe but it didn't sound too hard.

It is Copper sulphate (main ingredient of Bordeaux mixture) which is going to be withdrawn "as a garden fungicide."  I was told it was still going to be sold in Wine making outlets, but my memory may be at fault.
The reason is that Copper is very toxic to all life, so maybe spraying it is not such a good idea. Don't think it has done me any harm, grew up in Widnes which had Copper smelting and Sulphuric acid production. We lived in a chemical cloud of Copper sulphate.

In fairly low concentrations it will kill fish, I guess they are worried about it leaching into rivers.

I'm not normally pro-eu, as most of their laws are rubbish.
