Title: problem with rotovator!! Rally with Briggs and Stratton engine
Post by: RenishawPhil on February 19, 2012, 18:48:05
I have a Rally rotovator (with a briggs and stratton engine)

Up until today it has run fine, today however i have a problem (although managed to get most of the rotovating done and worked all the massive lumps of manure which needed working in before i can use the new allotment)

I can start it up and runs fine with the choke open fully

If i attempt to close the choke more more then about 5% it will chug and cut itself off.

I cant put it in to full "run" mode as it will just cut itself out

When it is running the choke cable seems to pull back and forth, it i keep hold of it with a pair of pliars it will run ok

Can anyone give me some pointers please?

sounds like a new choke cable needs fitting.. or adjusting

Thanks. Hope its a case of just adjusting I will get the engine number tommorrow night if I can and download the manual of the briggs website. Luckily my better halfs dad has a garage and us pretty handy.

Is adjusting it quite straightforward?

Hi . Have run it without air filter in place. Think it must be to do with the choke cable/leaver. Seems odd the way it moves a lot.

OH the lawn mower mechanic says sounds like dirt in the fuel.

Take out the spark plug and if it is white in colour it is the carburetor diaphragm, a simple job to replace,

Thank you. How can you tell that from the spark plug colour

I had a similar problem with a Brigg's with the engine running just for a few seconds then cutting out, the spark plug is the first place to look at really the colour  tells you a lot, if the plug is wet and dirty more than likely it is carb/fuel related, like others have said could even be something like the air filter being clogged up and dirty,

thanks everyone

I am going to check the spark plug first clean it then try it

Next i will take the carbeuttor off, and rebuild it with the OH's dad. as he is a mechanic i am hoping this is fairly easy

If you are running it without the air filter then the air to fuel ratio might be affected ie too much air which is why you need to have the choke out ( to give more fuel to maintain the ratio)
Hope you get it sorted. TC

Sorry I didnt reply back

Ohs dad took carb about. Full if Crap. Used a compressor to blow Crap out . Sprayed . Emptied out petrol which had nuts in it. Put back together and works fine:)
