Hi I'm looking to buy some garlic bulbs (my crop was hit with white rot so no using those for planting), and wondered where people got theirs from?

I buy from my local garden centre. I do like to be able to see what I am buying when it comes to garlic - no dried bulbs etc and I can pick the biggest juiciest looking bulbs..

Depend what variety you want. I have expereimented with several types over the years, the ones i have had best results with are 'Marco' and Messidrome'. These seem to suit my soil (clay) and conditions (Midlands). I have tried supermarket garlic and I.O.W farm garlic, and neither did well for me.
I had been saving my Marco garlic and replanting it the past two years, but this year I decided to plant later because of the snow and put them in late winter...lost the lot to the very dry Spring.. ::)
If you are not fussed about variety I would try Wilkinson's garlic (cheap), or any of the online biggies like Thompson & Morgan, Suttons, Dobies, Marshalls, Tuckers some do 'starter' mixed variety sets for autumn planting but they are not the cheapest. I haven't tried Marco, and I'm on clay so will look that up. I've never had sucess with spring planted garlic. What I've found has worked have been the softneck varieties from the Isle of Whight guys, but they are pricey! And I was wondering where people go theirs from :) And what with white rot, I'm a bit loathe to sepnd loads!

The porcelain garlic comes from The Really Garlicky co., and can sometimes be found in specialist veg shops.

My best garlic came from a greengrocers in Nottingham. When I bought from the IoW garlic people it ALL got white rot. So I went back on Friday to get some from my original greengrocers; 49p a bulb, and he charged me half price for some reason. :D

I think it is worth trying to save the best of your own garlic to replant the next year if possible, hopefully it will aclimatise to your conditions and do well as long as it isn't affected by the dreaded white rot. I had a bit in one of my raised beds, and I know you are not supposed to grow alliums in affected soil for at least 7 years afterwards, but I risked it and grew salad onions as a catch crop and they were fine (perhaps because of the shorter time they are in the bed?) I won't put any overwintered alliums in that bed for 10 years. I have a five year rotation in the raised beds section of my plot so will just miss out the affected bed when it is the alliums turn again.
I also only plant the biggest 'outer' cloves from the bulbs and eat the little inner ones! You seem to get bigger bulbs that way.

I thought that it wouldn't be a great idea to save my own if I had white rot. :-\

This year my biggest and best garlic came from the bulbs from the Really Garlicy Co that I bought in Waitrose. The others from the allotment shop were fine, just smaller. I will probably grow a mixture of both again this year as somtimes I need a large clove and sometimes a small one ;)

I grew garlic for the first time this year up here in Yorkshire. It was a variety called Germidour, a purple-ish one sold by a local nursery under the brand name of Taylors. It did fabulously with huge bulbs (on a rich medium loam). I'm going to plant some of the cloves from this years crop, buy more new ones and compare the two come harvest time.

Wilkies had had sold out of Garlic,the lady said they have their garden delivey on a wednesday night so will be down there tomorrow.Got some jap onions though.

Got my garlic from the garden centre on the way to the Allotment yesterday after all that LOL.............one of the IOW ones.......£2.99 looked nice and healthy.

Must've struck lucky at our wilkies, got 2 packs of garic, no name but looks fine and 3 packs of 50 mixed colour onions, they'd ran out of shallots :)

I've just received mine from Edwin Tucker beautiful bulbs, large & firm. They worked out to £2.08ea inc p&p. I found them to be cheaper than T&M, Really G and the rest ....
