Title: Gutted no rain
Post by: Digeroo on August 02, 2011, 06:06:43
We had heavy rain forecast for last night, but not one drop fell.  It is more than three weeks since the last drop.  Even the sun flowers are beginning to droop.

All the showers forecast for the rest of the week have disappeared as well.  Just hot hot hot.

But on the bright side my tomatoes love it and looks like being a reasonable week for my daughters hols in the Lakes,

Who had my rain?

It was a heavy and humid day yesterday in Whitley Bay and late afternoon it absolutely bucketed down, and continued on and off for the rest of the evening. The ground is well soaked this morning. busy_lizzie

Well in my case it will be up to the lotty before work for a good watering, got to keep that Sweetcorn right, but there is rumour that thunder storms are on the horizon, :)

I feel like the slave of all the buckets.

We had a few drops this afternoon, a rubble of thunder and a rainbow, but as soon as the water reached the ground it evaporated again.   And it was about 30 C.

We have had hardly any rain since Feb.

We had rain early this morning enough so everything was damp when we got up and then a very hot sticky day and a 20-30 min heavy downpour at 6.30 this evening.

Sorry Digeroo :)

The heavens have opened and I hope they stay that way all night to fill my water butts and give my poor raised beds a good drink!

Very light drizzle for a couple of hours.  Hopefully will stop the flowers falling off my runner beans.  But not much reaching the ground.  We are due for a bit more very soon.  But unfortunately most of the heaviest burst will probably miss us.  So far only about an inch into the water butts.

Supposed to be cooler too and will hopefully dry up this afternoon and dry off the tomatoes so they will be ok too, meant to cover them but forgot.

Great just starting again.

Hmm >:( Its getting very desperate in here for rain too..and the sky just don't deliver. We had odd spot this morning..literally.. >:(
I can't remember drier summer while I've been living here..18yrs.
My sweetcorn won't grow..potatoes are all finished now and what they produced is very small. Plenty of seed potatoes for next year  ::)
As for rest of the crops..some have done well and others are on stand still.

Rain stopped here around 7:30 am after delivering 18mm, filling one water butt and half filling the adjacent one. Too much lush growth where the others are situated to get near enough to check them. I think the 'front' has passed now - still a bit cloudy with the odd spell of sunshine. The veggies have perked up but unfortunately all the flowers on the squashes are full of water (which I have now shaken out) so they probably won't get pollinated. Ah well - the rain was more important, there is still time for more squash flowers and hopefully fruit!

Good rain for a while but back to the drizzle now. Just about filled one butt from the roof at home.   Nowhere near 18 mm here much more like 4.   Nothing really heavy, will be stopping fairly soon.

I just love watching how the courgettes etc funnel the rain and let it run down the stem until they have had enough when they start to tip it away from the plant.

And I am thinking of all those lovely runner beans, they seem to set so much better when it rains.

Forecast is for sunny this afternoon and some wind so hopefully the tomatoes etc will get dried out asap.  I shall go out and take off some leaves to make sure the stems dry out well.

We've had now couple of hours sort of misty rain..hardy doing anything.
I think we are suffering for some sort of curse around here..all summer any rain that has been around has failed to do anything..5 miles away..its pouring.. ::) ::)
Aren't clouds suppose to pile up above you when you are cursed..so opposite effect then would be 'blessed'..but it doesn't feel like it.. ::)

You're having a joke.  It has been raining all morning it in not so sunny Enfield.  Wonder where Kev has gone on his holidays and if he has rain. Am missing his jokes (how sad).  ;D ;D ;D

There is a thread re Kev's hol, I think he has gone somewhere nice and sunny.

Jokes situation very slim at the moment, not much from ACE either.

Another few drops last night. Again better than nothing but it has been 9 days since the last lot.  Even the sun flowers have been dropping.   Unwatered soil dry down a good foot plus and 1/4 inch will not do much to correct that.   Even the sweet corn needs watering.  No runners on the strawberries.

Seems odd that in Scotland you are having floods.  We have had so little rain since February.  If this lasts through the winter we will have serious water shortages next year.

The trees are beginning to shed their leaves, it is like autumn.

Came back off holiday last night. Home half hour and it was raining.  Lost two trees so far this year to lack of rain.  Lots of trees have fallen in the Swindon area this year.  No shortage of wood chips from the council   ::) ;D ;D

Trees doing ok round here so far.  Having to water newly planted apple trees.  I think their roots are long enough to reach down to the water table through the gravel.

Another advantage is that the grasses are not growing as strongly as the wildflowers so the sides of the roads have been stunning this year.   Very good year for the vetches and scabious they must have very long roots.

We've finally has couple of rainy days..but only the top inch and half is wet-ish.. ::)
I've managed to keep all new fruit trees going..those are the main thing and most expensive to replace.
Well, its sun shine again..surfaces are drying out from last night..hopefully there is more to come tonight.

Not had any decent rain for ages here.  Soil dry as a bone to over a spade's depth.
