Title: Can I sow peas I have just podded?
Post by: pumkinlover on June 29, 2011, 18:24:21
Noddy question I guess but I wondered if the seeds have to mature, or can I sow some of the "past it" peas to get another crop.

I saved some to make soup later but these have gone bit further so can will they germinate and give me a further crop. I'm not worried about cross polination. Just greedy for peas! :)

I very much doubt it. Think they have to be mature before they are viable

I think Goodlife did it but I think she dried them first.

If your pods were fully mature yes. I did sow some fresh peas few weeks ago, but those pods were already started to dry out although the peas inside were still  green.
I had 100% germination with those peas.

..I should add to that..
I did have some of the peas shelled and drying out for sowing for few days..but then I lost my patience and sowed them and sowed some straight from pods that were hung up to dry too..and there were no difference in germination. The ones that came straight out of the pods were only just cut and hung up couple days before.
So seems like as long as the peas are mature they will germinate. It was new experience for me too..l ;D

I once had some peas I was saving for seed get damp, and they germinated inside the pods. They do have to be fully ripe though, ie too hard for normal kitchen use.
