Title: 'fair-share router'
Post by: tonybloke on May 26, 2011, 14:40:51
is there such a thing?
with stepson on his x-box, there ain't enough band-width to allow the rest of the family on-line! ( got an 'up to 20meg' cable system)
is it possible to get a router that shares the bandwidth equally?

Probably not, or at least one for consumer/home use and that's affordable...   :(

I think that NetGear make some that will give you bandwidth management capabilities, look for the ProSafe range.

Depending on how tech savvy you are, but it is possible to set up a cheap PC with two network cards that you's use as a 'gateway', installed on here would be your bandwidth management software.

Is there anyway of limiting his use to less 'popular' times of the day so other users get a look in?

Hope this helps?

What you are looking for is a router with Quality of Service (QOS), but that is about all I know so I can't recommend a model, and the fact that you are on cable not ADLS complicates maters.

Who pays the bill! ;)
Time he got some fresh air and helped out on the plot, so you can sit down and get in the shed again! :)

I have a D-Link router that was sold as a "gaming" router. It has a full raft of QoS features which were designed to allow smooth game playing but, I used them to limit the daughters bandwidth use and even cut her off the internet after bed time, full and complete control. They don't sell mine any more but the following may have similar features.
