Yes, very good luck to them. A lovely young couple who are obviously first & foremost very good friends which in my opinion is the real basis for a happy marriage. My one wish is that our very intrusive & s**t stirring media leave them alone to get on with their lives as normally as possible.
Right I now have to decide between the red hat with the purple ostrich feather or the fuschia one with blue cabbage roses on it
Cheers !!!

I'm not going near the telly today - I just dont get monarchy or the way they are worshipped. Still each to his own and for those watching - enjoy. I'll be down me plot.

I can think of words other than brave to describe those camping out last night.

I wish them all the best but I have absolutely no interest in it personally.  Im going out on my bike for a ride - the streets should be really quiet and then down the plot to fix the water tanks!

I don't suppose Kate's dad will be asking if she's sure she wants to go through with it, the question most dads ask before they give their daughters away ;).

I haven't seen any of it yet - been at work today - but there was a party on the park today outside my house and ti was really good seeing so many folk out celebrating.  I'm flying the union flag from the shed for the week to mark the occaison rather than the usual Cross of St. George.

If I'd have thought about it I'd have got a commonwealth flag - so I'll fly it here instead, and congratulations to them both from me.

Most of us love a party and a reason to celebrate. Dress up and enjoy.

Our queen has dedicated her life to her people.

She can not walk around the streets like we can

Once when we were abroad and looked odd to the locals. We could not leave our hotel without being mobbed. They all thought we were rich and wanted a slice. Sadly we are not.  We were there for  three days and those three days were hell. We could not leave the hotel. (yes it was a five star and room service was magnificent). Point is we were glad to go home and live our normal life. Much as we wanted to enjoy that part of our holiday we could not. It is horrible to be restricted.

Would I swap places with royalty

NO.NEVER

Additional information

A person I worked with was a very very SOCIALIST type anti anything royal yet their biggest brag was that they had been to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party.

I wont mention that Lord Prescot of Hull who tried to refute that he had accepted a peerage on 'have I got news for you'

I am a socialist and want equal rights for all. I also realise that most people (especially the Yanks) enjoy Pomp and Ceremony.

I like to dress up too (once in a while).

Diana was the people's Princess and a lot of those people celebrated HER son getting married to a perfectly beautiful girl who had the education and intelligence to enjoy the situation that the Naive Diana had no chance of. HER husband wanted to marry Camilla and it was denied. Once Camilla was safely married off he was told to find some one else.

They tried the same thing with William , he split with Kate.

Then they met again and William, no doubt supported by his father, considering what had historically happened. He got the woman  he wanted.

The monarchy?            We love it to bits when they visit our area. Open this or that.

In London the foreigners love to see a ceremony. (it brings in tourist money).

Do we need a monarchy? Probably not.

Do we like having a monarchy?.........YES

No point in arguing. We do.

Sorry, i forgot to put"imo" it's a load of old bollox,
yeah Princess Katherine loked a picture, Harry looked the part too, but, and i may be wrong, at £74.00 of each and every tax payers money, as i was informed this evening, £74.00 of each tax payers wage being spent on this wedding of the 21st century,

Still a load of old bollox

£74 well spent and would be happy to double that.  At least we get to see something for our money. Its not as if we have this type of event every year.  Plus all the prestige for our designers and this country.  Just the feel good factor alone is worth the money spent.
When it comes to wasting money how about stopping payments to the lazy arses that never work or the alco's who get their money on a weekly basis and do b**ger all for it.  Or give us choice about who gets our hard earnt cash abroad.  I'm sick of the millions set out of this country in aid releif that never gets to the people that it suppose to help.  I could go on and on, on this subject but won't.
I second zigzags post.
Here's hoping you all have a good bank holiday.  God save the Queen.

I've never got the bit about Diana being the "people's princess" - how did that work? As for getting something for the money - all I got was nausea from having it rammed down my throat for the last few weeks (plus a day off  ;) which was useful to catch up down the plot and do some shopping whilst it was quiet). As for bringing in tourism - France has plenty of tourists - the buildings and history still exists. The vast majority of us will never see any of them anyway. I wonder how many people are really pro-monarchy - quite a few admittedly but I doubt it's as high as 99%. I suspect many are like christians in this country - celebrate the big occasion (like yesterday or Christmas) but for much of the time couldn't give two hoots.

Still I wish them well - they are going to need it.

I find it very hard to raise any enthusiasm at all for a wedding between two rich people that I don't know and don't care about.
I don't understand why anyone would get even remotely excited about watching anyone else's wedding at all, let alone a bunch of over dressed privledged yahoos.

Anyway it meant all the roads were empty so I had a lovely cycle ride round SE London - they can do it everyday as far as I am concerned if it keeps the masses quiet and indoors...

Of course 99% of the figure quoted was what it cost the country for the bank holiday. The same cost could be ascribed to every bank holiday.

Good gracious!  Assuming you mean income tax payers, and not VAT payers, that's 26 million times £74 equals, wow, nearly £2 billion.  Must have been one heck of a champagne reception, eh?

Why do people so rarely do a reasonableness check on these assertions?

the cost to the economy, whatever that means, was estimated as between 2 and 6 billion........CBI reckoned 5 billion.....
Title: Re: Will & Kate
Post by: non-stick on April 30, 2011, 12:23:43
I expect many cost estimates include the cost to the economy of another day of work. Estimates vary on that - with the TUC estimating that at £1.2 billion (although I believe the CBI quote as high as £6 billion when usually opposing TUC requests for an additional bank holiday). Then there's the cost of the wedding and security etc. I know the wedding is supposed to paid for by the Royal Family but it could be argued the tax payer is still chipping in for that. Obviously some costs will be offset against increased tourism for the event itself with people/media travelling into the UK to watch.

Who knows the real cost - not sure I care that much.

I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding.  The couple looked radiant and in love, the people there all looked happy.  The bride was truly beautiful and elegant.   The Abbey and ceremony both inside and outside were splendid.

A young couple starting their lives together in hope - whats not to like   :)

It made me happy and proud to live in this country, and see how well we can do things - even Google thought it was worthy of their main page.  Well done us  :)

Sorry All -  but I think there is so much to love in this life/world/existence for those who choose to look for it.  I loved every minute and it gave me much happiness and pleasure, and I shall remember it for years to come, hopefully when William becomes King and Catherine Queen.   :)  :)  :)

Can't help it - that's just the way I feel  :)

All the best
Sue

I didn't watch it, I find the media reverence distasteful, and I'm not happy personally about having the Queen as head of state, but I do agree the cost is worth it - there are other values than financial, holidays and collective celebrations are healthy.

The thing I didn't like was the stuff about who gets invited and who doesn't. They invited Tory ex-PMs but not Labour ones and snubbed the Syrian ambassador but invited Saudi and Bahraini royalty.

Actually I was really p-ed off on Thurs I can't work up any real annoyance today. Must be the extra bank holiday relaxed me!  ;D

Title: Re: Will & Kate
Post by: zigzig on May 02, 2011, 19:45:17
The cost of the royal wedding is supposed to be £10 million. there are nearly 61 million people in the UK that, costing wise is about £5 each.

Yet both the Queen and the Middletons paid toward the cost. Reducing that outlay.

The pomp and ceremony will have gained the British economy, quite a bit.

I reckon, as a nation, we at least broke even.

So, those who did not like the event wont have lost a lot.

Let's face it. We can not decide how much of our taxes goes on things like War, Dole, NHS, etc. It is decided for us by those we elect.

Perhaps a change to the voting system could change that. But then who will vote for a change?..

We will chose to keep things just as they are. AND MOAN.

You guys!! Last year we had the  Winter Olympics, the whole coiuntry was excited, folks were wearing the Canadaian logo. kids in school were doing programmes about it, volunteers were in the hundreds to help out. The feeling was one of  electricity all over the city and the country. I didn`t hear ant negativity anywhere. I am baffled here.

Why the negativity , I am not trying to be rude, truly, but why should the feelings be so different.

Surely it is an honour for the city and the country , one I would think the folks would be completely behind.

I don`t understand.

Is there something I am missing.

It is not the actual Olympics, but the coverage that gets people down. When some peoples diet of Coronation street and East enders gets messed about to fit in a sporting event, they get very indignent. I suspect they cannot deal with real life, they live their lives according to soap operas, and very sad lives they are.

I shall be cheering them on, even though sport ain't really my bag.

Those rozzers at the wedding were a bit over the top, they would not let me in because I was improperly dressed with in my clean jeans and Will and Kate T shirt. They also wanted to confiscate my 4 pack of McEwans export and my cheese and onion sarnies. I showed them my bus pass but they would not accept it as identification. I shan't bother next time when he gets married again.

No Jeannine your not missing anything.  I think Ace as hit the nail on the head partly.  The british have over the decades got in the habit that the glass is half empty, rather than half full.  So many seem to always look on the dark side about things, then when it goes wrong they get the chance to say ''I told you so''.  Fortunatly there are still a lot of things that are great about this country.  When we get to the actual day we will do the right thing as we always do.
Hope your weathers improving, we could sure do with some rain here!!

You wan't catch me moaning about the Olympics - and I'm not exactly the most sporting of individuals. We've gone for tickets in the Canoe Slalom (near Kev's house - get the kettle on!), Diving, Athletics & Gymnastics. A great chance for the kids to see what can be achieved through determination and dedication - and an inspiration to all of us.

HMS You Set Fire To Joan Of Arc

we could even have some money over to have some planes for them
