Plenty of cover in case of rain, admission is free.

I'm one of those mad people who always wake up early.  Any time after 4am is normal for me.  I do go to bed fairly early though, around 10ish.

I have a poster in the back of the mobile shed advertising the plant sale, white elephant and cream teas.
We have new neighbours that have come from the Cameroon and yesterday she asked if she could bring the children to see the white elephant. When I looked at her with amazement she said "Its not areal elephant is it?" I said "No" and she said "I know its a flower isn't it"
Trying to explain was so difficult cos I was laughing so much.
When we go out she always asks us if we are going to the farm.

Good wishes to you for every success  I know how much hard work and organising goes into these events. Usually a good day is enjoyed by all. Pity you are too far away from us.  My bus pass wont take me that far and back in a day.

Parking is so easy so you won't have to worry
Title: Re: Plant Sale, Cream Tea & Bric-a-Brac
Post by: Squash64 on May 13, 2011, 17:35:33
As Shirl says, parking is easy.  Parking will be on the site near the gates and it's just a very short walk up our main drive to the stalls.  I'm not putting the potato sacks out to begin with because they go very quickly.  If you ask one of the stallholders to point me out to you I'll get them.  (or look out for a short, fat woman trying to do ten things at once  ;))

I've just got home and I am a bit tired.  No I'm not, I'm exhausted!  But before I collapse I just wanted to tell you all that we made close on £1000!  This included the Cream Tea, Jenny's Jams, Shirl's Bric a Brac and Shirl's glass paintings and the plants.  We have never made this much before and we are naturally thrilled.

We sold most of the plants apart from lots of tomatoes but we did have hundreds.  Less tomatoes next year, and more courgettes, aubergines and squash.

The weather stayed ok-ish apart from the wind but at least it didn't rain.  If the photos are any good I'll put some up on our website later.

Thanks everyone.  :)

It was only possible because of all the help we had.  In fact, we almost had too many people willing to serve on the stalls, something that's never happened before.

Yes, lots of men were there but no Birmingham teams were in the final so maybe that's why?

Grannyjanny - I did go to bed at 10 last night, but I've woken up even earlier this morning!  :o

Nice to meet you too Betty and Shirl..   Sorry not to post sooner.   Problems with my computer which has been getting slower and slower really needed replacing.   Got on-line today with new one.

I enjoyed my visit.  Lovely plants.   Nice coffee.   Lovely chocolate cake.   Helpful carpark attendants.    Would love to come again if I can endure the travelling to get there and back. Yes it would be worth it.

WELL
HOW DID IT GO?
We could all learn by your successes and failures to organise our own......
Share please

Plant Sale - we ask people early in the growing season to pot up some plants for us, this year we seemed to have hundreds of tomato plants and were left with quite a lot.  Visitors were asking for courgette, red cabbage and aubergine plants but we had very few of those.  Next year....

Cream Tea - this is organised by a team of four plot holders and their families so there is nothing for me to do.

Bric a Brac - I asked for donations of good quality items and people left them in the pavilion for us.  Shirley and Tony took them home and sorted them and then ran the stall without any help from me (thank you both!)  They also got rid of all the unsold items afterwards, a big help because in the past we have had to do it.

Jenny's Jams - Jenny brought her jams and preserves and generously gave us half of her takings.  The other half went to Cats Protection.

The takings were divided up as follows:-

Plant sales   £477.20
Bric-a-Brac   £135.68
        £612.88
For our Association funds, the only time during the year that we raise funds for ourselves.

Cream Tea   £164.75
Gate collection     £88.27
                   £253.02
For Macmillan Cancer Support

Shirl’s glass paintings       £88
Jenny’s Jams & preserves      £106.25
                      £194.25
This is for the Felix Fund, in case Felix needs veterinary treatment.  The other five cats are feral and if we can catch them, would be treated free of charge (to us) by the vet.

We advertise in the local free paper and by putting posters up locally.  We have massive signs outside on the road.

We are now planning for the Summer Fayre on August 20th.  This will be for Macmillan again and for the County Air Ambulance.  Other groups come and raise money for their own charity - Swan Rescue, local Scouts, Cats Protection (of course  ;))

A lot depends on the weather of course.  We plan for rain and try to provide enough shelter because the longer people stay, the more they spend.  One year we had some local Morris Men to entertain the crowds and they were brilliant.  The sun even shone that year.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.....
