Title: Chooks - a better time of year ?
Post by: mentallot on March 28, 2011, 21:01:12
OH - now convinced that chooks are the way to go - has read that Autumn is really the only sensible time to stock up. Any comments ?

Many thanks

I got some more hens 2 weeks ago; my others went the journey 4 weeks prior.  Now is a better time to get point of lay as you will get eggs almost immediately.  You get less eggs in colder weather and could be waiting a little longer depending on the breed if you get them the back end of the year.

When I collected my 6 Light Sussex, (4 POL and 2 chicks), I put 2 hens per box on the way home from the poultry farm supplier.  When I got to my allotment to let them out..... there were 2 eggs in the travel box!!  Eggsellent start I'd say ;)

Autumn/early wintyer they might start moulting, then definitely no eggs and loads of feathers everywhere!
