Hi all,
Having discouraged the birds, the slugs have arrived!
Has anyone tried the jam jar in the ground, full of beer technique ?
Don't really want to use pellets, but the slugs are starting to become a real problem.

Hi danfulton - I have. Slugs do like beer and do fall in - and so do lots of other beasties. So they do work - but not very effective on their own.
At this time of year - especially in this weather - I'd wait for two or three days after the rain, and find the cool damp spots they hide in during the hot dryness of a sunny day. Under stones, bits of wood, plastic, rhubarb leaves, at the edge of my beds where the grass from the path overhangs the soil. And squash them!

PS - I reckon on doing as much damage to them as I can over the next coouple of months, and so reduce the population which overwinter ready for next spring.
Get 'em before they breed!

Those poor slugs, is there another way of distracting them I dont think I can bring myself to squash them and though drowning in beer sounds a nice way to go I wondered if anyone has used any fancy ultrasonics to deter!! Or am i being too soft on the squishy big eaters?

Hi cabbagepatchkid - hmmmmmmm! I have to admit I find slug squashing VERY satisying - but each to his/her own!
Keep an eye on all the cool, damp and dark places where they hide - and watch for their eggs!!!! They look like school meals tapioca - little clusters of whitish round eggs. Destroy those religiously, and you cut them off at source.
Look out for them when you're digging in autumn too.
I'll put up a list of slug and other links somewhere - it might be of interest.

On the beebs gardening mesage board, there is thread by hugh jones..... he has been experimenting with coffee and has published his findings there... it is very informative and fair play to him, he put me straight earlier in the year about using coffee and speaking only about me gardy, snce using coffee... I hardly see a slug or snail and the veg in me gardy is
looking good,
How many of you have a rabbit problem? aparently my site has a biggy bunny hoppity-hop-hop prob ;)
