Title: chriscross1966's squash swap and mass buy 2011
Post by: chriscross1966 on October 19, 2010, 11:59:46
OK folks, in view of the wonderful European seed sites that someone put up in another thread I'm going to suggest combining the squash swap with a group buy for some varieties. I'll try and harvest a list out of the sites over the course of the next few days and get a googledoc spreadsheet going so people can put themselves down for things....

please explain to a beginner? do i detect the possiblilty of getting new varieties of squash seeds. sounds great but I have grown all mine together and in view of the notorious promiscuity of squashes would not have anything to donate except a heinz57 :'(

It's not that hard to keep strains pure if you have daily access to your plot, so their are plenty of seed-savers out there... that said some of the saved seed I got in the last swap turned out Heinz :D....

From the buying point of view, as an example, I don't think I'll want more than two or three seeds of any squash, I like variety and next year I'll be concentrating on dwarfs due to my space restriction (unless another allotment turns up avalable on my site)... I still won't need a packet of ten of them though and that's the s,allest pack that bobby-seeds does.... KCB-Samen looks like doing 15 in their standard pack.... Now I could some of the seeds I waqnt and swap for the rest but it should be just as easy to set up a group buiy as well as running the swap. So [eople send me spare seeds for swaps and money (somehow) to cover things where two or three of us are splitting a packet. It saves on postage overall as I would be posting stuff out in the swap anyway but it means that the stuff coming from abroad comes through in one parcel with an overall saving on postage....

I told myself the other day NO MORE NEW SQUASH SEEDS

I do an annual order from Baker Creek in USA (www.rareseeds.com), they generally have about 25 squash seeds per packet. Happy to donate a few seeds from the packs that I get.

Pretty certain you did that last year Suzanne.... indeed, I'm also pretty certain I should be holding you responsible for the Boston Winter that is currently blocking the door into my lounge :D

OK folks, the spreadhseet is here:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0An48BOmv88h_dERlM01KWUprc1RkM0hzcTdFNV9sVHc&hl=en&authkey=CLGZxZAB (https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0An48BOmv88h_dERlM01KWUprc1RkM0hzcTdFNV9sVHc&hl=en&authkey=CLGZxZAB)

At the moment anyone can view, but you have to be added to the list to be able to edit.

I hope that works. can folks let me know. PM me your email addresses if you want to be able to join in. PLease do not send me a long list with a request that I do it, I don't mind doing the odd line or two.
TO add you name as a requestee for any given squash when there is already a requestee then using ALT+Enter at the end of their name will add another line inside the same box (just like every other spreadsheet program does)

Sorry folks there will be a day or so before I get the permissions etc sorted out, I just spent the evening elbow deep in my PC to get it up and running on a new OS (migrating from Mandriva to Opensuse and it's not completely plain sailing)... turned out the new hard-drive adn controller card (LSI Ultra-320 SCSI into a 15k cheetah sca drive) isn't a bootable combination.... gah.... so by the time I'd finished messing around with that I'd run out of time and need to go to sleep now....

Likely cutoff will be sometime early January anyway so plenty of time....

THe spreadsheet is pretty easy, what we want  is one line per variety with folks who have seeds of any given variety either adfding it to the list (if it isn't there already) or else adding to the entry already there. Ditto on the same line for people looking for the variety. If you need to enter your name and quantity into a box where there is already such a thing then highlight the box, and its contents will appear in the edi tbar at the top of the screen, click the cursor onto the end of the line, press and hold Alt and hit Enter (then you can let go of Alt) and it will create a new line inside the same box..... If you have a request for a variety that isn't already on the list create a line for it....

This sounds fun - do the Squash varieties have to be rare/unusual - quite new to squash growing and only really got the more usual varieties, so possibly this would be unfair to ask to be included in this swap Criscross?

permissions up and running for first batch, everryone who has PM'd me is on there...

Rules are:

This is a SWAP... no massive shopping lists of rare stuff with half a dozen defender courgettes in return :D

One line per variety please. If there's allready a line for it go to the end of the box for each box you need to enter in and use <alt> +<enter> to add another line in the box. Please do not trust the autowrap to do it for you....

If for any given variety there is a mismatch between available ansd requested I'll investigate options regarding a mass buy.

Is that all clear (i'm a bit rubbish at documenting stuff like this...)

1066 I seem to have lost your address, please re-PM it... sorry....

Hi pigeon seed.... I've redone y0our permission.... you are aware that you have to register that email address with Google (top RH corner of Googles homepage usually) and log in as that addresws to edit the doc. Anyone with the link can view, you need to register adn log in with google, then go to the "Documents" bit of the "More" dropdown and you should find it there.... following the link without logging in will only let you view... hope that helps.

Also I have some the same squashes as those already on there. Shall I add my details within the same line (i.e adding my name and no of seeds for Thelma Saunders within same line?)

thanks

Yes please add the extras into the same box. To create a new line inside the box highlight the box, place your cursor at the end of the edit bar that has the boxes data in it near the top of the page, press <alt> and <enter> and make your entry, then press <enter>.

PS, PM me if you addy still not working.... it's possible Googledocs doesn't like me adding people who aren't registered and then them registering..

The summer crookneck came from real seeds:
http://www.realseeds.co.uk/courgettes.html
The one I left for seed had a skin that was so hard that it was very difficult to remove, so definitely recommended for summer use only, though the flesh was still good.

The winter carnival I got at a seedling swap:
http://transitionnorwich.blogspot.com/2010/11/autumn-splendor.html
They are typically 1.5 - 3 lbs, but with one outlier of 6 lbs.

Both are self-pollinated.

Hi Chriscross - unfortunately the google link still wont work for me - dont know what I am doing wrong - can access it but not edit it.

Would it be possible for me to tell you what I can offer and what I would like (realise this makes more work). I have Marina de Chioggia (6 seeds), Festival F1 (6 seeds), Summer crookneck squash (8 seeds), Squash spaghetti (10 seeds), Thelma saunders sweet potato (6 seeds), squash Crown Prince (6 seeds) to offer.

I would like Rugosa Fruiliana (3), sweet dumpling (2), black futsu (1-2 if available), kikuza (2), bon bon (2) if possible.
Thanks for organising this - hope this is ok

Oh god I mustn't! I've got seed coming out of my ears now. And though we pigeons like seed, there must be limits.

I've managed to find a few 'local seeds for local people' - well from the south east of England, and I know you said you'd be interested. I've been given a bonus pack of Kew Blue beans, and some monastic coco (from Kent) and I've forgotten what else. Would you like any?

Sorry. That's not talking about squash.

Hi All,

I am a little uncomfortable at the fact that I have selected 6 varieties on the swap list and yet when time comes, I have nothing to package off to anyone as none of what I can offer is needed.

That said I still want the seeds as I have got squash fever.  In addition to these I am also buying some seeds on-line which are: £1.25 for eight seeds, two each of tuffy Sweet (acorn), delicata, utchiki kuri and blue kuri and also a packet of 3 rolet squah seeds for 75p.

If anyone would like some of these seeds then I would be more than happy to buy a packet of each when I buy mine, by way of contribution to the swap

Oh that's lovely! I've always heard good things about the taste of delicata. But you didn't need to as far as I'm concerned. I could change one of my requests to one of the other things you offered.

Actually looking at that sheet now - there's so much offered, with no one taking it! We've all gone seed mad. And I think a few people want the black futsu you've offered.

Anyway, your kind addition of delicata is much appreciated.  :)

Just in time as my seeds came today.  I ordered two packets (one for me and one to share) of 'Squash Surprise'.... can you see where this is going?

8 Seeds, 2 each of Delicata, Tuffy Sweet, Blue Kuri and Utchiki Kuri and I haven't the foggiest which is which!  The seeds are distinguishable though.

Pigeon seed, I could either send you just like the whole packet, one of each seed or the four biggest seeds as I am guessing the two of the bigger ones are delicata an.  Either way I have eight seeds that require a home.  Anyone want a surprise seed in there package?

I just had a fun conversation with the lady who supplied the seeds at moreveg and she kindly helped me identify which seed was which.

I felt like a a complete plonker but problem solved  ;D

phew! How come they were mixed together? Did you order them like that or did they get mixed up after? (Sorry am I being thick?  :))

And what a list of squash for 2011 - where are they all going to go? Mind you, I bet you can grow stuff underneath them if you tie them up bamboos. (Am I repeating myself from earlier in the thread? Bit tired  ;D)

I didn't read the small print.  On the packet is says squash surprise and you will not know what you get until they grow.  Would you like the mix as I have no use for more or do you just want me to single out the delicata?

I have roughly a 10x10m patch for 10 plants to trail along the ground as I just will not get it all dug so therefore they can help suppress weeds.  Its a bit snug and I have gone from 2 each of 5 plants to 1 each of 10.
Rolet, Loofah and Tromba will be grown up supports, over sheds and anywhere they want to go within reason.

You've given this a lot of thought. You're a planner, aren't you? Me too. I've drawn so many diagrams of my allotment, they waft out of drawers and cupboards every time I open them. And I keep making lists of things I'm growing.  I don;t know why, I don't need a list, I just like making lists  ;D

On the subject of swapped seeds - thanks but I would really just like the delicata, if you can extricate them. I am a bit pushed for space now as well!

But on the plus side for you with all your many seeds, you can use them next year. Saving squash seeds is a bit fiddly with the hand-pollinating, so at least if you have spares you can give yourself a year off that seed saving.

You're right about the lists.  I make mine as I keep changing my mind so I feel that If I put it on paper than the idea is not lost.  However, like you I have plans at home, plans at work, so many plans that they defeat the very reason for making them.
But I like it and it helps clear out my head :)

OK folks are there any more for any more?

Well, at a seed swap somebody gave me seeds of Invincible: blue-grey skin, about 5 kg fruits, apparently very tasty, and stores well. But when I googled it, it said it's F1, and I don't have the details of the person who gave me the seeds. So I didn't add it to the spreadsheet, but if someone wants to try, I have 6 seeds available.

THat reminds me I must sort out that small blue and add its seeds to the list in case anyone is interested. I'm calling a cutoff date of the end of January for all filing to the list to give us plenty of time to get the rest done...

I've been going through the list this morning and ATM it's all swap, we will not be buying anything.... I will send PM's round over the weekend to all concerned to say how many of each seeds to send in...

This can also be taken as a last call for people who want "in", PM me with what you have and what you want and I'll add it to the sheet (be easier than walking someone new through trying to edit the sheet themselves at this late stage).

Hi Goodlife, two envelopes turned up this morning.... Black Plum Russian in one with no note and Mortgage lifter in another with an old date stamp on it and the envelope looking like its been ripped and resealed.... there was no note left (but at least the seeds were in there....) were either of them you?

Hi there...well well..morgage lifter was from me as I promised, I put seeds in little plastic bag and taped it on card. As for 'Russian'...if it came separate envelope it's not from me..if it was inside the same envelope than the morgage lifter and it's little brown one..then it could have 'poped' in by accident ::)
But I only sent one envelope.
Have you got secret mailer? ;D

me again...now that I'm thinking about it..anything else by the morgage lifter is not from me..I can remember seing card trough the envelope and wondering if I should chance the envelope..I wonder if somebody in post thought there is money or something in and ripped it open to check. I did send it for while ago..that's why I thought to ask if you received it. Postman must have felt guilty and added extra packet for you.
Secret mailer it is ;)

Hi All,

I guess this is the best place to ask for some info.

I am trying to organise my squash planting to best accomodate the plants since nine of them growing in rows 1.5m from one another and others on supports and where I can fit them.

Can anyone advise if any of the following need a lot of space or are reasonable compact:

Thanks in anticipation

Peter

Kikuza
Thelma Sanders
Tuffy Sweet
Delicata
Uchiki Kuri
Blue
Rouge Vif Etamps
Queensland Blue
Spagetti squash
Rolet (aka. banana squash)
Loofah
Tromba di albenga
black futsu (mine was small last year, may have been stunted?)
Bon Bon (compact I believe, bush?)
Hooligan
Ash Gourd

;D OH YES,,they do need room..half of them do romp away given a chance and providing the soil is fertile and moist enough.
Queensland Blue particularly did grow guite monster size for me last year.
Black Futsu wasn't far behind.
Uchiki Kuri, Thelma Sanders, Loofah and Futsu would be good candidates for climbing on supports as their fruit is not too big and the weight of the should not pull the plants down..the strenght of the supports are another story..

I've grown uchiki kuri for a few years and the vines weren't massive, but maybe they don't like the conditions. I grow all of mine up supports, and if necessary support the squash with cloth or netting. those big squash cage things are good, lots pf points to support the squash from:

Bon-Bon in a good year can strangle out other squash, one thing to bear in mind though is that it can also climb,  though the structure will need to be quite strong cos the fruit while not massive, aren't small. Ditto Tromba di Albenga

Chrisc,

Not one for these veggies, but if you can point me in the right direction of which would be the best squash to try on the family I would be grateful.
Having not tried these before I would like to know which would be good to eat and therefore before growing them, would buy some to see if the family get on with then first.
Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest T+M's Winter Festival F1. The plants are fairly well behaved for a squash, the fruits aren't terrifyingly enormous, it sets easily, the flavour is good if you leave it a month or so in storage, it stores really well in non-perfect storage conditions, the skin is soft enough that you can leave it on when cooking and you don't need a chainsaw to get into them. it's also pretty early, I've had ripe ones in mid August before, butternuts are way later than that, even the supposedly "bred for this country" ones...

I recently sent goodlife some seeds and didnt get round to posting untill a few days after I aimed too.  Just kept driving around with the stamped envelope on my car seat.
