Title: Can anyone help me identifiy this tree?...
Post by: kippers garden on August 16, 2010, 09:26:13
I am trying to identify a tree.  At the moment it has red cherry like fruit, each fruit is the size of a cherry and has a stone like a cherry and is on a stalk like a cherry, but it has the skin that looks like a plum.  It has a definate trunk and the leaves  have serrated edges and are oval-ish without leaf hairs.

Looking through my book it is a possibility it is a Nettle tree or Cornelian Cherry but i'm really not sure.  I wondered if someone could shed some light on it for me.

(Sorry i haven't a clue how to put a photo on here)

Thank you

Could it be a myrobalan, aka cherry plum? There are lots of them fruiting in the UK at the moment - my OH and I picked about 8 kg of them yesterday, yellow- and red-skinned ones. They are often found in hedgerows as well as in gardens.

I think you are right...thank you so much.  Can you eat the fruit?....do you eat it raw or do you cook it?

I have made jam with the myrobalan plums.  Quite nice, and a bit sharp but an awful lot of stones.
