Title: A pole ?
Post by: Admin Dan on September 02, 2003, 13:35:15
People refer to the size of allotments as 5 poles, 10 poles etc.

What is a pole - my lottie is about 50 x 30 foot, which on our site is half a plot.

How does this relate to poles ???

Cheers

5 ish poles!

a pole is 30 square yards approx and a plot 10x30yds is 10 poles.

I make it 4 1/2 poles - if you take 25ft x 50ft to be 16.5 yards x 8 yards, which makes 132 square yards, and divide by 30 gives you 4.4 poles - mind you this is seriously schoolgirl maths from way back when.  Now percentages I'm great at!!

Poles are the same things as rods, and the rod supposedly comes from the length of the whip used by oxen drivers whose length had to reach to the lead oxen in a 8 oxen team. It is equal to 5.5 yards, 16.5 feet, 1/40th of a furlong, or 5.029 meters.  ;D  Always remember its a measure of length, not area, otherwise you can get yourself in a real pickle when talking about 2 or more square rods :)

Thanks Ceri - but it's no good - can't get my head around it at all!  And the darn oxen have wandered off so I can't check me whip either! :D

Hiya,  :)

National has just standardised the "normal" 10 Pole Plot at 250sqm.

4" is a hand, 22 yds a chain, 5.5 yds is a rod/pole/perch, 40 poles is a furlong.

10 links a chain, 10 chains a furlong, 8 furlongs a mile.

Henry I said yard is distance between tip of his nose and end of his thumb.

All is now clear.  Easey Peasey when you know!  'Corse depends how big your nose is ....

perhaps we should look at this in a whole new way - pole position - not how big is the allotment but how far it is from.....

the pub, the cafe, the pub, a loo, the pub - do you see a theme at all?  ;D

For the record, mine is literally metres away from the nearest pub - which has loos and does food.  Now that's pole position!

Cripes Ceri!  I'd be on the back row for nearly everything!

The nearest pub is miles away (We do have loos, but like sheds, spiders lurk in there.....), the nearest I get to food is what I take with me (usually a banana cos it is prewrapped, I don't need clean hands to eat it and the wrapping goes on the compost heap  :D)

No pub nearby, and we're five minutes walk from home, should an emergency strike.  But the most dangerous thing is that we're near a parade of shops, including a branch of Greggs the bakers.

Another woman on the plot wodered why her weight wasn't going down with all the healthy exercise she was taking, then realised that she was munching pasties all day ;D
