Title: Allotments 4 all meet 2010
Post by: cambourne7 on June 28, 2010, 00:09:07
Hi Guys,

I was just wondering if anyone was interested in another meet this year, looking at the barnsdale photo the other day did bring back a lot of happy memories?

Suggestions from past posts were

- Ken Miur Fruit place
- Jenka herb place
- David Austin Rose Garden

I was just wondering what people though, unfortunately i dont think us all going to visit a certain person in Canada en-mass is a option unless we have a few lottery winners here who can charter a few planes over hehe :)

I  could offer extra sleeping facilities by using  my 2 sofas, a king sized blowup bed ,a recliner chair, and a spare king sized 5 inch thick memory foam slab..now if I pull the other MF slab off my bed and just use the normal mattress I could sleep  10 -20  depending on how friendly you all are. ;D ;D

So let me know when  you all coming and I will bake a pie.

If you google "Jekka herb",  however...... ;)

I'd be up for a meet, but have to say im not particularly into roses. Where are the other two? Guess we could do with somewhere fairly central to get the maximum number of people there.

I enjoyed last year at Wisley but neither Ken Muir nor Jekka herbs are very central, though they both look interesting.

I'd love to meet up, if possible.  :)

How about Ryton Organic Garden, which is in the Midlands and therefore perhaps more accessible for more of us? Or Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire, which has a fabulous kitchen garden that I've never seen and would be free to National Trust members. (Sorry I haven't managed to track down entry fees.)

When are we thinking of? August? September?

Eat out together or bring a picnic of homegrown fare?

 :)

May I suggest Caulke Abbey as well:

 http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-calkeabbey/w-calke-photo_gallery.htm

It has wonderful kitchen gardens, orangery and an auricula theatre. The house itself is also well worth seeing, a bit shabby not your usual pristine NT property.

Also worth visiting, Biddulph Grange.....

I'm sure I could fit it in - maybe the 28th? - but I'm not sure what to do if it rains. There's nowhere on site, and while I probably could get a room, it might be a case of having a whipround to pay for it. The easiest thing would be my church, about a mile and a half away. It gets quite a lot of use on Saturdays, but I should be able to squeeze us in somewhere. The nearest pub is one of these places that serves food in minute quantities (three small boiled spuds and a couple of slivers of meat) and charges for a proper meal.

I'm in Birmingham too and you would all be very welcome to come to our site, maybe after Robert's?  We are in the north of the city, Robert is in the south but we are very easy to find.  We have a large(ish) meeting room, kitchen and the all-important toilets.  There is a pub just minutes away which does cheap food.

It's a shame because I would have loved you all to visit our allotments... :(

I think they mean a big tent....
I'd vote for Betty's, having seen both sites but would want to avoid the BH weekend... she has an Open Day on the 12th if I remember rightly...
If it all goes off we have another Open Day here in Derby on the first Sunday in September...

We could get to Betty's site its only down the road from our plot. It is a nice big site with a good sized meeting rooms and of course the pub. We go to her open day and all of the proceeds go to charity. We met Saddad and Alison  and Deb P last year at the open day.

I would LOVE it if you all came to our Summer Fayre on August 14th, I never even thought of that so thanks Saddad!

There will be plenty of things to do, lots of food to eat and  lots of cover in case the weather is bad.

As Shirl says, we raise money for the County Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support and every penny we take is divided between them.

I hope you can come, it will be nice meeting you  :)

Don't know about a workshop but our scarecrow competition will have been judged by then so people can see the new ones.
The one that's been standing by the pavilion for almost a year has got wasps living up his jacket so he will have to be removed.  Shame, it won't look the same without him.

Sorry Digeroo, I meant to reply to this but then forgot....

Our Summer Fayre (14th August) starts at 12 and finishes around 3ish.  We are fairly easy to find as we are just off the A34 down the road from junction 7 (Great Barr)  There is a map on our homepage www.growit.btck.co.uk and we have put big signs up on the main road to show where we are. There is plenty of parking in Perry Park just at the side of the allotments.  We are actually situated inside the park, next to the Alexander Stadium.  The entrance is in Church Road.
I hope all this makes sense, just ask if I've missed anything out.

Val, don't be daft.  it Saturday 14th I think at Perry barr in Brum starting about 12.00 noon.  If the bus numbers are still the same as when I lived around that area the number 33 goes somewhere near there.

Valmarg - I'm really sorry - of course you will be welcome!  My fault entirely, I replied to a post from Digeroo and assumed that you would have seen it.

I know it can be upsetting when it seems that a post is ignored, it happens to all of us from time to time but honestly, it wasn't intentional. I wish everyone could come on Saturday but I know that's impossible so I'm really looking forward to meeting those who can.

lottie lou - I don't know about the 33 bus, but I know the 51 and 52 go quite near, on the main Walsall Rd, the A34. If people are coming from the City they need to get off the bus at Perry Avenue then cross over the main road and head for Perry Park just a minute's walk away.  There are lots of signs up so hopefully people will see where we are.

How are we going to recognise each other?  Should we have a meeting-place at a certain time or wear badges or something?  (maybe hang a courgette round our neck although we might get some funny looks) It would be a shame if people come a long way and then don't get to meet everyone.

Who is hoping to come?

Tony suggested we all carry an M&S bag but I said that Wilkinson bag would be better cos I'm sure most of us shop there. Anyone who cant get a bag will soon notice the sad b******s outside the tea rooms having their tea and cake. ;D ;D ;D

Would love to join you but something else sneaked into the diary before the date became clear.

Have a great time, everybody, and be sure to admire those squashes, tomatoes and other burgeoning crops, on behalf of absent friends!  ;D

Oh, and please report back - I'm sure lots of us will want to know how the day went.  ;D

There should be plenty of cover in case it rains but we'll keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't!

According to the forecast(and we don't really believe them) We are in for a heavy shower at about 1pm. Perhaps they were talking about the shower of A4A's ;D

We have lots of gazebos so there should be plenty of cover if we get showers (of rain ;))

I've made (so far)
4 gingerbreads,
4 carrot/orange cakes,
4 choc fudge cakes,
4 orange/lemon cakes
12 cornflake things.
Some of them are dairy-free.  I've labelled a few as dairy-free but I'm wondering if some people would be put off buying them if they are all labelled as such?  Anyone have any thoughts about this?

I hope everybody has a smashing day and I look forward to hearing the stories and seeing some pictures :)

If one comes nearer to me, I will definitely pop along.  Being a non driver poses a bit of a problem otherwise.

It is absolutely pouring down at the moment :'( We've got lots of cover - the local Scouts leaders came and put up a massive tent yesterday - so we've just got to hope that people come.
Who's going to eat all the cakes if they don't..............
