Title: Flat Roof
Post by: Unwashed on June 26, 2010, 13:28:46
I'm building a flat-roofed workshop in my garden and I want to know what to roof it with.  Do you have any experience of this new EPDM rubber roof (http://www.online-buildingproducts.co.uk/p/1013083/firestone-epdm-membrane-060-grade-15mm-.html)?  Felt flt roofs only last 10 years and I can't do that myself but I can lay this roof myself and I think it lasts longer, though I can't be sure.  What would you do?

Hi unwashed, i have experience in high performance built up felt roofing which will last longer than 10 years if done correctly.  I have in the past had to strip falt roofs that have been covered with rubber membranes, one in particular that I remember near didcot had only lasted 10 years and when the customer tried to contact the installer they had of course gone out of business.  I haven't had experience of the epdm system so the case may be it might be very good and like you said you can do it yourself which will keep the cost down for you. As with anything in life there is pro's and con's to everything.

a lot of folk seem to be going down the in-situ GRP flat roofs round this way (decline in boat-building industry has left many grp specialists looking for alternative work!) ;)
