Title: Can anyone advise me I have to buy a new laptop and no-one here to help me
Post by: Jeannine on June 26, 2010, 09:25:53
Allowing for the fact that I am in Canada and you are all in the UK,,is it possible to help me choose. I have no clue what I am doing and John is no longer able to help.

I think many of them are both sides of the pond.

I just have to get one and am completely lost !!

ok a few things 1st
how much do you have to spend?
And what do you want to use it for? - playing on the internet, downloading films and music?  Looking at photos? Writing letters? Keeping accounts? These things can make quite a difference.

recently I've advised my MIL and a friend to start by looking at the John Lewis website (never knowingly undersold!) to get ideas - but I also pointed them in certain directions because I knew their budgets. FYI they both chose Toshibas (very robust. good warrantees, good company, and price wise very reasonable, and will last them quite some years to come)

Then when you think you have an idea as to what you like, you would need to consider what software comes with the laptop - it seems many are sold with half versions of proper software. But depending on what you are wanting that might be ok? As you know there are lots of us on here to help!

Don't get cought up with all the hype. If you want it just for writing, internet and other basic stuff then the cheapest one will be enough. Dell outlet sometimes do some good offers.

I would go for minimum of :
cd/dvd  writer (backing up all you seed lists ;D)
2gb ram
120gb hard drive
wifi (wireless)
14" screen

I use a Dell  Inspiron 1545
Dell Canada  http://www1.dell.com/ca/p/laptops?~ck=mn&scat=notebooks&s_tnt=23689:1:0, (http://www1.dell.com/ca/p/laptops?~ck=mn&scat=notebooks&s_tnt=23689:1:0,)
something like this would be ideal, i think the mini's would be to small for you. http://www1.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-15r/pd (http://www1.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-15r/pd)

when my parents wanted a laptop, I told them to go to Staples, the office supplier. Very simple to choose because they just had a small range. Simple to pick one that matched their needs. PC World's etc have just too big a selection, and you could end up with something that's just to over-specified (and too expensive)
I thought the one they ended up with was really good value

We don't have those shops here, I would probably buy one on line if I can get an idea of a suggested one.

I meant find a similar shop that carry a small range. Like Tesco's here sell a few laptops/PCs. They wont set the world on fire with their specs, but they wont be rubbish either. Pretty much any basic computer will do more than you need, except if you need good graphics for games.

Your problem isn't you might buy a laptop that doesn't do what you want, but that you buy one that does more than you want (and pay extra for it)

perhaps if you post exactly what you would want to use it for, peeps could advise what you do and don't need it to have

Neil, thank you, I need a cam thingy so I can see my grandaughter in Holland talking to me

Mostly used for internet use, buying online. files, geneology, veggie database etc, I do have some quilting sofware programmes which need to be able to go on.

I had  office and I think the other one I really liked  was one for doing newsletters, forget it's name, Publisher?? I lost a  lot of school  installed extra sofware, it pretty did everything but I didn't use it all  but lost most of it when I had the hard drive changed on this one.Needs to be wireless of course and not  heavy.

This the third one I have had, best was the first which was a Toshiba.

Good sound.

I can't see me getting the use from one full of bells and whistles .

I have never downloaded music or movies  but I guess I might.

We have Future shop here.Costco, similar to macro has a large range.

What is a notebook?

I can't help with technical stuff cos I've not got much of a clue but if this is any help-
I bought my last 2 laptops from the internet both have been Acer, very happy with both. I tend to go and have a look at review sites and when something takes my fancy put in a search for more info on that model and have a look at feedback from users, I usually end up with a short list and just do a compare. When I've decided on make and model I have another search for price. My last one came from a shop through amazon.

Screen size, battery usage, weight, what does it have pre loaded onto it, speed, I'm sure you have thought of lots more. I bought one which ticked the most boxes for me and will I hope last me for several years.

I use Acer too. I have both laptop and a desktop X3810 (space saver), both work well. Look at the specifications, get as good a spec. as you can for what you can afford. You shouldn't need to pay more than the equivalent of £400. If you are limited in finance then see what PC World have in refurbished laptops. Staples often do demo models cheap (my x3810 was one, £235 without the monitor).

Notebook and laptop are basicly the same thing.
A  Netbook/mini is a lot smaller/lighter and designed to be used while traveling. The keyboard is smaller and for many people harder to use.

Cosco should do laptops, just look for one that suites your needs. Open office can be used for general office needs, it's not as advanced as Microsoft office (most people don't use it to it's full use) so Open Office should do you and it open MO documents and it's free.

Web cams are sometimes built in but i think a seperate one is better as you can upgrade to better quality. Some digital cameras/camcorders can be used as a web cams also.

I was looking at Acer in Costco just a few days ago but read somewhere they are different to most laptops,I can't be doing with anything that is  very different to what I am used to, this Vista is awful. My previous one had XP Pro and I got used to that one quite easily.

I guess I will have a cruise around and see what software I need.Problem is , the shop clerk can see me coming as I have no idea what I want and it makes me very vunerable.

Thank you so far, I realise it is hard to advise me when I am not in the UK.

you will run into problems with your software anyway Jeannine whatever you do  i'm afraid
i didn't like Windows 7 (which is what you'll get) at all (didn't even try loading Office type software). Got rip of it

WinXP was too old to run on the laptop

so I used Ubuntu, which I use on my PC anyway. You can get completely free software for most needs, but it is a different operating system

but some webcams don't work with Ubuntu/Linux.....etc

Agree with the advice not to get Vista. It is very slow and very un-user friendly. Most laptops will come with Windows 7 now, which is a lot better, however there are some unscrupulous places trying to offload their old Vista stock, which may not take Windows 7. Both are less user friendly than XP, unfortunately.

Toshiba are good, especially the Tecras, which have splashproof keyboards and are quite robust. HP/Compaq are OK but have been told the parts are often specific to HP so will be more expensive to upgrade.

I have a Samsung NC10 netbook with XP Home on it, am very happy with it for what I use it for - surfing the net and catch-up TV. They are easily upgraded to 2GB RAM (there is a hatch in the base), is light, and its got v good battery life. Wouldnt want to type on it all day though, although you could plug a monitor, mouse and keyboard into it easily.

One thing- make sure whatever you're thinking of buying can be easily repaired locally.
Our grandson-the computer expert- recommended Toshiba but in our area there is no repair shop so, to his disappointment, I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7. So far so good but still adjusting to it after having a Mac. It has a numbers pad on the right which hubby thinks is wonderful to use.

Jeannie,

I think what you need is for someone who has the knowledge and understanding of this new age to come to the rescue.

I am far from that but will help if I can.

Try this web link to see if any of these catch your eye in a price range of your choosing.

Good luck with your new venture.

I have a Dell and I am quite pleased with it.  Did like my Sony that I had before.  If I forget to plug in and it runs out of juice the Dell simply shuts down but the Sony used to warn me first.

Biggest problem is that they seem to have their help lines in India and the people there seem to talk a rather strange version of English which I find very hard to understand so if you have a problem it is not always easy to get it sorted.  They do not seem to know that they are not in fact speeching English.   Though Dell have an online help system which is not too bad.  The operators are helping several people at the same time so a bit frustrating if you are a good typist.  They sent me a very power lead without a problem when it failed.  Though at first kept on telling me that I had a different problem.  Since borrowing the powerlead from my daughter solved the problem I was pretty sure what I knew what was going on.

I would pretend you have a problem and ring the help line of any company whose computer you think you might buy.  If you do not get through in five or ten minutes try a different option, particularly if you are being held on a premium line.  Most answer their sales lines very quickly indeed.

If you take lots of photos then a good size memory is a good idea.

If you want to play a lot of games with amazing graphics you need something more powerful but I certainly do not tax my laptop unduly.

I think that you need to be a bit more confident about what you want. Make a list of the things you do with your computer and maybe things you would like it to do better.    Go and have a play on some of the computers in the stores.  If a shop assistant makes me feel uncomfortable I think it is time to try a different store.

Thank you all. The only thing I know for sure is not Vista..I have that now..it is awful.

One of the problems is that I really don't know what the programmes do, so am not in a position to choose blindly.

I am more comfortable looking on line and if I can ask questions here I can try that.

Good idea about pretending a problem, I never would have though about that.

I have Norton on the systems here , had that installed at the same time I had the had drive changed. My laptop keeps changing things, and I don't know if it is the laptop being faulty, Vista, or Norton .We paid for 2 years with Norton too, it seems to be fine on John's pooter

Thank you for the link Landimad, I will check that out.

In fact thank you all for your suggestions, they are all very helpful. This is as bad as buying a car..I hate that too!!

Jeannie,

I found out from a friend that they have been using Mac. Whatever that is!!!
They say that they get on very well with this and it maybe another system to look into before making a final choice.
Windows 7 is the standard for most pc's now unless you get an older model or fit the xp to a new one from a second hand seller.
Again happy hunting.

A MAC is an upmarket version of computer. It has certain advantages, mostly that it is more stable than Windows but I wonder if the cost is worth it. They certainly have fewer problems with virus. The cheaper way to go is with Ubuntu/Linux OS, very stable and free, the software is free too, but it does take some studying to use it. It can be installed on any IBM type PC. I am 81 and I managed it.

have you got any further with ideas or choices yet Jeannine? And yes Marg - publisher only seems to be included in the full on version of Windows now (I used to use it lots), you can buy it separately, but obviously that gets pricey too!

Jeannine, one other thing to look out for is how big the keyboard is compared to the touchpad (the mouse bit), I've seen some where the keyboard seems particularly small. Just something extra to think about if fingers aren't so nimble!

The only other idea I've had is to have a look online, find a couple that you think you like (don't worry too much about the details) and post the makes and model numbers on here and we could have a collective positives and negatives review of them for you. Like gardening everyone has their preferences and there's not always a completely right or wrong answer!!

How about something like this? http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=9653&category=

Our last four notebooks have been Toshibas, and two of those from Toshiba Direct.  They're simple, reliable, tough enough to last our kids through college, and I'd recommend them highly.

I've got a Tecra, which is excellent, but my son uses a Satellite like the one in the link (but with XP when we bought it, not Windows 7), and it's been faultless.  It has a camera for Skype or whatever, WiFi built in, the works, really.

Everyone that I work with who uses Dell hates them.  The Sony Vaio is well regarded, but expensive.

Thank you again for the help.Asbean I actually have a wireless mouse, i have never used it and can't for the life of me  think why!!

Melbourne, that actually looks pretty good, I wonder if there is something t should have and doesn't, I see Office is just a trial and it doesn't have Publisher which I really wanted but i will look into this a bit further.

Taxes would put the price up as they are on top of the quoted price, we have  a BC provincial tax plus a Federal one and just this last month we have had third one tagged on, so it would be much higher. I always forget about that when shopping.

As far as office goes we all use Open Office at home (5 of us). My daughters at University doing English and it hasn't held her back. My other 2 are at college and its all they use at home.
This is their site.
http://www.openoffice.org/
Many millions of people use it worldwide as well as an number of goverments.
Its totally free, updated every couple of months rather than every couple of years.
If you don't like it you can delete it. It cost you nothing.

I upgraded about 6 months ago. They've already had a mention, but Dell are excellent value for money just now. Mine is an Insipron 1564. It looks better than Dells used to, you get an i3 processor which is fairly good & Windows 7 64bit (which means it can actually use all it's memory). Fill it up with Open Office for free (already mentioned) instead of Microsoft Office, and AVG Anti virus (also free) and it's fairly hard to beat for the money.

Hi Jeannine and all.. this is my first post on this forum.. good news is I've had 22 years in computer industry.. bad news is I know zilch about gardening!

Jeannine.. asking for laptop recommendations is a bit like "how long is a piece of string?" but I've read through and note lots of conflicting advice which at best will confuse you or at worst lead you down the wrong path. Hope that doesn't come across as harsh as it reads (to anyone), as believe me the last thing I'd want is to upset anyone! (as my reason for joing this forum today is to get some gardening tips!).

I've noted just a few of the things you said as what you need is far more important than what works for someone else.

Things like webcam, internet, wifi etc will almost certainly come as standard on any model that will be fit for your purpose. Other general software factors such as Open Office vs Microsoft are nearly always down to a mix of your budget and how much you like to be 'controlled' by the masses. What you don't need is a great big list of things that everyone else has got!

The one thing you've said that stands out above all others (to me anyway) is:

"I do have some quilting sofware programmes which need to be able to go on"

You don't say anything about your current system (assuming you run the quilting software on it?). Assuming that particular software is windows-based it might be an idea to write down the version/product info (click on 'help' then 'about' when it's up and running).

Personally, my first move would be to contact that software provider for advice on minimum/compatible hardware and ask if there are any known restrictions on upgrading.

Rather than post lots of other stuff to confuse you I'll stick to just 3 bits of advice;

1. Be sure what you are buying can run the software you need it to (without having to encur additional expense).

2. Of all the hardware options, 'Memory' will almost certainly have the biggest impact on performance and so will be the single element which makes you happy (or not) with your purchase, hence when comparing products like for like (particularly new ones) ask how much an extra 1GB (for example) of memory would cost.

3. Don't be afraid of buying something "second-user" (commonly used  I.T. term for 'used' or 'second hand' computer equipment). Think of the % cost savings just as you might with the used car market (I'd rather buy last years top of the range model  as it's been tried and tested).

Any potential supplier who can deliver on all 3 elements above is worth talking to.

I got the impression you don't have many options in your locality but a google search for coquitlam+laptop threw up quite a few?

that's a mostly better specified netbook than I just bought.

you don't need any of the extras on that next page

the only issue you might have - is that it doesn't have a floppy disk drive (the extras page has one as an extra). Only a problem if you have lots of important stuff on floppy disks.
If you do - easier and cheaper option is use another PC with a floppy disk drive and copy them onto a USB stick

I do have some pretty extensive plant files and they are growing(pardon the pun)

EG Squash, I have info on about 600 varieties with written data and a picture for almost every one, plus history of squash, diseases, suppliers etc

Sweetcorn much the same, and this one gets bigger all the time as I receive more data from plant breeders.

Tomatoes, mostly the data on what I have (about 500 types) but all with pictures

Beans, not as much as the above bit it is growing fast.

I am  working on a book  on growing corn and squash and that is well on.

Plus I have a lot of data on food preservation and a book half done on that subject too.

So far it seems to be OK but I have  the 2 in progress books  on the home pooter which makes it awkward.I would prefer to have them all together.

So maybe I do need extra somethings??

I am not really looking at  getting the cheapest, it is not the primary thing, but I don't want to waste money on stuff I wouldn't use.

I have a programme designed to help an author..forget it's name but I do use it when I am working on the two written works.

Jeannine it kind of depends how big these files (books and documents) of yours are, and how big they might get.
What do others think about if she bought a separate external hardrive to keep her work safe and separate? They are also very cheap! Sorry to add something else into this - but it's worth a thought. I have an external hardrive that I keep my photos on, so that my laptop doesn't get too cluttered etc

Just a thought?!

I was trying to post but my PC crashed (ha!). 320 Gb is quite a big hard drive. You would struggle to fill that up with pictures and text

but you could really do with some back up for everything. Think if you lost it all. I have everything backed up  3 times at least + the original

Hi Jeannine - wow, you write books about this stuff? :o

I got a new laptop this year, a reconditioned Compaq, 4Gb RAM, not sure of the hard disc size. I agree with the other correspondents - a separate, external hard drive would definitely be a good idea - they're cheap, and they can act as backup drives. You wouldn't want to lose all that info you've spent 000's hours typing in would you?

And go for Windows 7 - forget the hype, I really do find it increases my productivity for the technical writing that I do.

P.S. I do proofreading (books) for Cambridge University Press . . . reasonable rates! 8)

to help pay  private daycare for the kids..ah well now that is different. however when I tell you that they were published in magazines like Peoples Friend, Woman's Weekly etc you will understand why I would not want to boast ::) Got me though school though!! No laptop then.

Still on the search but trying hard, can you folks bear with me a bit longer, the one I have now is losing it's functions fast so is going to die anyday now.

I have been on Amazon and have made a wishlist which I am told is visible to friends , if I have done the link right you should be able to see it

http://www.amazon.ca/wishlist/N11TKE1QBMS9

There are a few there, a couple say Vista which I don't like but have/ Pro after it so don't know if that is different.

One has Windows 7 which I don't know

and a couple on sale, not in my wishlist still have XP which I understand better but I should probably move on.

Hope this works as I am getting desperate, went inot 3 or 4 shopa last week and it was terrible, they could just see I was a sitting duck.

It seem to have done the link so please, if you still have any patience left with me I would really love the help

I think it is the bottom one which I favour. the one with Windows 7..don't know why.

It looks ok Jeannine. re Windows 7, my OH has it and it seems good, and from all reports is miles better than Vista!!

I'll go and have a proper look at that last one you mentioned .......

oh this is tricky, but it looks good to me, its a tough choice Jeannine, XP is great, but as you say maybe time to move on. The Toshiba seems to have all the features you mentioned needing. It also seems a decent price
But I'd like to have a 2nd on it!!! Anyone else???

Hi Jeannine,

I too had the problem of buying a new computer and couldn't decide which windows 7 or Vista, I chose Vista as I thought most of the glitches would have been sorted. I honestly do not think that there is much difference between any of them,  my last computer had XP and I find that Vista has really just moved things about and made it a bit more complicated but much the same. I have a book called Windows ME for dummies and it still works for Vista. I suppose they have to make money with these new ones. At the end of the day they are all same. Does anyone out there agree with me.

Oh Ta ever so..we are getting closer.

The one at the top of the list says Vista/XP Pro... I don't understand that.I tought it was one or the other.Does this mean on this machine I have a choice of either or does is mean it has both..sorry to sound so dumb.

I don't want Vista.. I have that now and don't like it.

XP Pro was what I had before till it  died on me and I got on OK with that

Windows 7  I guess is the new one and I think that is perhaps what I should get, but would like to know the answer to my first question before I decide.

I think the one I am leaning towards is the bottom one, probably because it is Windows 7

I have just looked and the prices have changed since I first posted, they were all on sale a few hours ago!!! This is driving me nuts!!

I've just been back on Amazon and most of what I looked at this morning have already gone, I should have just hit the button and bought the Toshiba  with Windows7..or well what is here now is different, I guess because I was looking at the flyer that told me about the ones on sale I might have expected it.

Hi Jeannine
I'm a Mac person myself so no expert on PCs but from what I have read Windows 7 has, allegedly, got rid of all the things people hated about Vista so would presumably be preferable.

Do you have ebuyer in Canada? cos I've used them here to buy laptops, and they do excellent prices and good products

Anyone else any bright ideas? Or could sanity check the one in the link?

Hi, I checked it, bit I wonder if I was on a winner withe onw that went quick, it was $700 someting bit that was half price almost as it was on sale so i presumed I was getting a better one for my money.

Someone just told me that Amazon do this all the time but they only sell a few so folks buy them fast, I was told to watch as there may be more coming along.I took their offerof am e mail if tey get another one like the one I liked.

I never expected them to go that fast.

I was quite proud of myself this morning..somewhat deflated now, but I did learn a valuable lesson.

What is an ebuyer?

Yes it does look like Amazon do these things on "sale", I guess as you say you will have to keep on looking

Sorry I should have been clearer - eybuyer.com ( http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Computer/cat/Netbooks ) are a company here in the UK that sell laptops, software etc etc, and I've used them for some years now, and they tend to do some good deals, are very reliable etc. and I was wondering if there was an equivalent company in Canada. Ebuyer only seem to ship to the UK

hope you find something soon

I think it is a bit of luck whether you get a good product when you buy one.  I do not always find the time taken to choose a product always equates with success.   When I decided to buy something I usually come back with one.  My OH goes to have a look and spends so long looking I have long since given up and gone home.  Sounds like I am impulsive but I get the urge to buy things so infrequently there is no problem.

Not sure you need a better one for your money Jeannine  Do you play computer games with amazing graphics?    If something is reduced it is because it is not selling.  If others do not want it, why do you?

If you take lots of pictures go for a large hard disk.  I also have a partable harddrive which is a great idea if I could find it.

Any new thing takes a few days to get used to but in the end you learn to live with what you have.   I have Vista and quite frankly have had few issues with it.  Though it worked better before it upgraded itself and now when you log on the screen goes blank.    I wish I had one with a separate number pad, but that is only because I spendt years at work using an adding machines, so I bought a separate number pad.

:) I agree with Digeroo. Often you spend ages looking and then still don't really get what you want.

It is horses for courses I'm afraid. You need the fastest chip with the most memory and biggest hard drive for the money you can get. After that Vista or Windows 7? I have both, vista on my main PC and 7 on my netbook. I think I'd err towards Windows 7 as I have a few problems with Vista (all my accessory programs have vanished e.g paint  ??? )

Hope you find a good replacement soon.

I find if it something I understand I can go out and make m mind up in seconds but if not I need to educate myself s bit first.

A few years ago I bought a new pressure cooker as my old one buckled, simple one would think, John oicked up the identicale on at Argos but I sent ti back, it was lightweight, part were flimsy, thw whole thing was really poor standard to the one I had so I needed to search.

Given everything I needed in a pressure cooker I started to look and I fund there were tons more out there than I wa aware, I finally settled for a Scandinavian one, expensive but a superb pan.

This is probably the last laptop I shall buy and I don't want to by soemthing I don't like or with features I won't use BUT.. becuse I don't understand them I don't know about many of the features anyway so need to learn more about them generally.

If we were talking about an electric kiln, they come with tons of options and I know them inside out and  I doubt too many people do,,I do not know laptops so am in a shady area. I just don't feel comfortable buying one. All y others were provided for me so I took what I got.

Regarding buying one on sale, I presume beacuse they are last years models like most things they may have more features than a cheaper one, I may not use them or go looking for them but if they are in the machine I do have the option of learning about them and if I didn't pay extra to get them in the first place I have nothing to lose.

John was always my mentor for stuff like this but he can't help me anymore.

Something will no doubt come along when the time is right.

I really do appreciate your help.

I guess I could have asked, if someone had bought a new laptop what made them buy the one they chose.

Hi Jeannine,

It is hard to decide isn't it!  We have three Dell laptops in our house....

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/laptops_great_deals/fs.aspx?refid=laptops_great_deals&s=dhs&cid=HDLaptop&cs=ukdhs1&dgc=IR&lid=SHP_BK1

sounds a lot but two were bought for offspring going to uni and I have just got one too, we are really pleased with them, we have Inspiron 15 dual core and they certainly have done everything we need.  I have Windows 7 and am really impressed with it.  I have other friends with Dell who have been impressed too.

Good luck xx
