Title: Our little girl is missing
Post by: star on June 14, 2010, 22:19:55
Our lovely Maggie jumped out of the landrover window while I was helping my friend get her bike out of the back. I can only think she got spooked.

The sad thing is when both dogs are in the back of the landrover you cant see them, and to be honest I didn't do a head count. They have never tried to get out without being told.

So our days since the 2nd June have been taken up putting fliers around most of the county. Ringing vets, microchip place, dog pounds (and going there to check for ourselves) local councils, RSPCA, dog sanctuaries, and basically asking everyone we see. We have just tonight thought to put this info on lost dog websites as we have been quite frantic and it never crossed our minds.

We will keep looking, and we do think someone has taken her in. I hope they give her back.........we miss her so much. Her litter sister has gone off her food and is as distressed as we are. Even the blinking cat misses her :'(

Star, I am so sorry to hear about your missing dog Maggie; how you must miss her.

Can you put a photo of her on here, give a description of what she looks like and say where you lost her?  There will be people who visit this forum as members or guests that live in the area and may keep a look out for her.

I hope she returns soon.

We adopted a dog last year and as he was so good and had been well trained we felt sure that some one was missing him. The charity told us that they get hundreds of dogs every year that no one re-claims. Many are good dogs which would have cost a bit to buy so could have been advertised.

At first I searched missing pets, just in case some one had been on holiday and had left it to be looked after and not realised because by law (they told us) a dog who has been in 'care' for a week can be re-homed and once it is, then there is no reversal.

We have a lovely pet and he seems more than happy. Is microchipped, has details on his collar and hopefully, if something happens we should get him back. Or at worst find out what happened.

A friend lost her dog when she had a motorway accident and the dog was found wandering on the central reservation. They were re-united a couple of days later.

Hope you get yours back but do keep on trying. There are so many different charities who take in 'strays' it is well worth searching the internet . She could have got into a lorry and end up miles away before being found or anything. It is a too scary to think about sometimes.

I would also search the sites that offer dogs for sale. Some one may think that it is a way to make a few bob. Not nice to think of but it could happen.

I do hope you find her star.

My dog ran out of the park and after hours of searching got back to find she had made her own way home.

Was you far from home, chances are she may find her own way back.

Don't give up hope .

Hi Star, I am so sorry to hear this and it would seem you have done lots to find her,you didn't mention an ad in the paper, sometimes I do know folks wait for that.Keep trying the RSPCA.. even well after the fact.

We took a ragged cat the in 2008 that had been hanging around a long time and phoned the vet among other things, they offered to check it for a microchip and it had one, the owner phoned me later, the cat had been missing a year, obviously it had been taken in by someone and then went astray again . I wouldn't expect it with a dog of course but keep on hammering at the various shelters and the paper.

Kids in the area are a great source of info as well, I would visit on a good day when kids are outside and ask if they have seen a new dog around, some kids especially little ones don't read posters too well, also find out of there are parks nearby were she went missing and go there too, whoever has her might start to walk her.Ask the people you bump into who are walking dogs .

Some Freecycles will post a message but not all.

Be persistant.

I wish with all my heart she is home soon.

Warmest good wishes

XX Jeannine

Good lord, me too!  My heart leapt into my throat when I saw the thread title!  Then I thought, 'dont be silly sam, if that were the case, she'd hardly have time to post it on here!'

Sorry to hear this Star, it must be so hard.  My boss had her cat go missing a few months back and she still feels so sad about it.  There is always hope and don't you forget that.  I hope today is a good news day :)

Star

With three of my own you are living through my worst nightmare.

If you have a mo put details of your dog on the site as there are so many people from so many places looking in here and they would - for sure - keep an eye open for her.

Hope you get her back shortly.

Best wishes

I tried to reply earlier today and add a pic of Maggie, it was a long post then found I couldn't add the pic. Photobucket is not the same as it used to be.

I kept trying to add it, then I lost the lot! So fed up in the end I am just closed the puta down.

Anyway I'm back and I would like thank you all for your thoughts and posts. I really appreciate everyone's concern.

The people we have contacted are the RSPCA, councils, dog pounds, dog sanctuaries, police (they dont do lost dogs now), lost and found ads in 3 different papers, Northampton radio, all the vets in the area, the microchip people, posters (we could get prosecuted for littering there are so many) and asking everyone we see in the area she went missing, also internet lost pets websites (D for dogs, Dogs lost and the National missing pets registry) If anyone knows another or more.........that would be great ;)

I still cant add a pic, will someone help me please. I will email it to any person who can put it on here, providing they dont mind. I would be very grateful for any help.

Star xxx

Poor you.  I would be beside myself if anything happened to my 'girlies'  I started to read this thread and kept hoping the further down I got that there would be a final post from you to say that your dog had been found safe and sound.  Where you very far from home when she went astray?  Best of luck I do hope that she turns up very very soon.

I'm not going to even try and read all the replies to this sad message, but as a life long and dedicated dog owner, could I mention the leads we have for both our dogs, which incorporate a clip to go into the safety belt base in the car? It folds into the lead when you want to use them just as leads and gives me peace of mind when I have the car windows partly open, to allow fresh air into the car.

I hope, with all my heart, that you have now found your girl.

Than you Belairebel, that sounds like a great gadget. Trouble is our dogs are in the back of a Landrover. There are no seat belts in there. There was no dog guard up either, we took it out to bring wood home from the DIY shop, and hadn't got round to putting it back.

It was totally my fault, I am completely guilty and responsible for her getting out. I have to live with these dreadful emotions. Its too late now to rectify a wrong, I just hope we get her back.

Star, you listen to me now, this was an accident, sad, scary and awful for you but nevertheless it was an accident, you are not reponsible, you must not hang this one on you, it will eat you up . Accidents happen , we always look for someone to blame but most times there is no one so we blame ourselves.. you stop it now, it was not your fault, it was a no blame accident.

She is out there somewhere, if she had been hit the shelters ect would know as they would have to retrieve the body, and they would be able to tell you that, so she is alive.

She can't be walking around lost either as someone would have seen her and with all your publicity you would have heard something.

So, someone has her. Maybe they think she is lost and have accepted here as their own, not what you want to hear but she is safe. They may get tired of babysitting her and then contact the shelters, this has happened many times, dogs show up later.

Watch the for sale ads too, it is isn't a nice thing to think about but hat also happens.

Many years ago when I bred and showed OES, the breeders around in my area had a rescue kennel for unwanted ones,if  there was an ad in the paper for one somebody  always went to see if they wanted us to rehome the dog rather than sell it on to just get rid. I went to see one, it was a lovely dog but the man was shifty and it was clearly not his, the man got it from someone who got it from someone etc. I broke the rule and bought it, with a cheque I cancelled the next day, then we started searching old ads, sure enough this one had been stolen from a garden 4 months before. It was returned to it's owner, a policeman,I learned later that he had visited the man I got it from!! I doubt he will do it again !!!

I  tell you this because it does happen and if you are persistant you may well find her long after she escaped.

So keep an eye on the for sale ads and the stud/breeding ads.

Too much info in here but I repeat, please stop blaming yourself,

XX Jeannine

Jeanine, all my friends have said the same about blaming myself. So I do know you are right, I feel its the same as grieving and certain processes need to be gone through.

We did have another sighting from a lady....last Friday. Which was a week and a half from the day she went missing. Everyone we see knows her by name and are looking out for her.

The one thing I hadn't thought of was the for sale ads, thank you. I will keep my eye on those from now on. We go every few days to the dog pound as I am not happy that they always scan for chips.

A lady rang this morning to say her lost dog was returned to her after 18 months, now that gives me hope too. We think she's making her way home as the sightings seem to be heading in our direction.

Thank you for your concern and your 'telling off'. I think I needed a reminder after being told before...... :-*

Star, I was hesitant to tell you this but feel I must...I know from experience when looking for a lost dog with a neighbour that if a body is found, it is not the RSPCA that get it..it used to be years ago, but it is a council department, I forget which but you could find out,the info that they have removed one doesn't always get to the shelters etc so you must phone them directly..horrible thought but do it and get that bit behind you. I feel she is still out there.

I am good at telling off when someone nice needs it.

Where is the picture.

That's great Jeannine thanks.

Yes re the councils, we have been in touch with four of them. They have all our and Maggies details, we go every couple of days to the dog pound. That's very difficult as it's a pts policy after 7 days.

And I appreciate your telling off, we all need it sometimes  :)

Star, I thought of you again today. In our local free paper today there is a lovely ending to a missing dog story. A family from Watford were visiting friends locally and their 18 month old King Charles was taken from the garden. The local couples autistic 13 year old daughter was very upset, although it wasn't their dog she had a special bond with it. The Police informed them that the dog had been found after they received a tip off from a member of the public, the dog was found at a travellers (house or site?). I just hope you have the same happy ending and your Maggie is soon found.

Lorna.......there are a lot of happy endings, I'm still hoping ours will be one of them. I am very pleased for the family who found their King Charles Spaniel. Specially for the autistic child, these children form incredible bonds even outside their own families. It was lovely to hear. Thank you for posting xxx

Jeannine....Maggie got out about 12 miles from home, its not the mileage. I know thats no distance for a dog, it's the dual carriageways and very busy roads that concern me. Our dogs are not very street wise. We only ever walk in the woods or big green spaces.

A lady did follow me into Tesco's today and told me a dog (she thinks, because it could have been a badger or fox) was run over several times on a slip road. I still feel she's alive, so does my husband. I can't say I wasn't upset though. I left the shop with nothing in a flood of tears.

I sound so melodramatic, but I will tell you what....its so nice to be able to pour it all out.

The roads are a worry but when my dog ran out the park and returned home she had to cross a seriously busy main road so please do not give up hope.

Also we had only lived in this place a very short time and I still can not believe she come home  :)

I'm so pleased your dog found they way home Betula ;), they are quite amazing animals. I don't think we will ever give up hope, even if we have to believe someone has adopted her. We need to believe she is safe. Having said that, I think those thoughts are for the future. We still wait for phonecalls.........

Hmmm this thread is bringing back memories,a few years back Jill collie was down the river on a walk with OH.............frantic mobile call from him saying she was not responding to his calls.............she was sitting at the gate to our decking waiting to be let in.

Ages ago a little dog just trotted into my living room and lay down....................wearing a tag so was able to reunite the happy owners with their dog.Thank goodness my patio door was open.He had covered a good distance in inner city Brum.Thing is he was a cutie and if I was that way inclined it would have been easy to keep him so yes someone may have adopted.

Keep up the publicity and good luck.

I just remembered a story from  mnay years ago that might help.

We lived just adjacent to a slip road then  and saw a dog looking lost up the road ,after a while it was still wandering and was  quite close to our dog run. I went out, she had a tag on with a name and address, several miles from me.  It was a few days before Christmas. We popped a lead on and took her home but no-one was in, we left a note with phone number, but no one phoned, we went back the next day.In Canada many letter boxes are external to the house and I noticed mail in there, anyway we left two  notes, one in the  mail box and one pushed under the door. This time we went very early in the morning thinking we could catch them before they went to work, still no reply so we went back in the evening and still no one home. I noticed the mail was still there and the pile was bigger, so we figured the occupant was away.

I noticed one letter was from the phone company, and thinking it was Christmas and they may have gone to relatives leaving the dog with someone,.. I opened the letter, sure enough there were several phone calls to a number well out of town, so we called it. yep, you guessed it, the owners were there visiting relatives, then we got the story.

The dog had been loose in the back of a pick up, crazy eh, at the slip road entrance to the freeway the dog had jumped out, by the time they missed her they  were almost in Kamloops, they  looked around thinking she jumped out as the pick up stopped, they searched but realised she could have jumped out anywhere, they had kids in the car and no option but to go on.

We kept the dog for them till they came back after after New Year as the children were expecting along visit, no probs for us. It was great to see the reunion.

Star, things like that happen all the time, I was cheeky enough to open that letter but someone else might have just kept her.

Dear Star, read your posts and just wanted to say good luck with finding your lovely dog , its so hard to have something bad happen. Dont give up hope, youve done everything right and hopefully all will be well soon.

My dog jake would go off with anyone who threw a ball for him and be delighted and start a new life and though i would be beside myself he really wouldnt care much so long as someone played with him and fed him so it would be much harder for me than for him. fingers crossed that today is the day that you get your freind back.

A letter to the schools asking to put up a picture on school ground, head might even mention it in assembly, rare but have heard it. Pick up time at primaries, lots of Mums and some dogs, flyers to Mums, secondary school talk to the teenagers, ditto flyers.

Have you considered a reward, I know it sullies things a bit but  if someone does have her it might prompt them to give her  up. The kids would actively look too. You do have to be careful though.

Post by: star on June 19, 2010, 12:00:02
Betula....I came off Facebook, but I think my friend has put it in there. I will check.

Jeannine....We have done the school gates, and posters to children to take to school. That's also difficult because kids try to help and I would hate to think they may get bitten because they had forgotten the....Dont stroke a stray dog lecture...all kids get.. I have told them to tell someone as soon as they can but not to try and catch her. We have offered a reward after a lot of talking about it....as you say its a difficult one. Some callous sorts out there who would hold some to ransom, but we have to try.

PurpleHeather...thank you so much for doing that. There is just so much to think of. I really appreciate that hun

We went to the local dog pound on Thursday and saw a lovely JR cross. Then I saw his pic on a lost dog forum! I posted as there were no contact details for the owner, my post is on there today....I do hope they check the forum and go to collect him. That's always the fear, that we miss the obvious for Maggie. But I now know there is no chance of that with you fantastic people here, there's so much advice and support.......xxx

Feel sorry for you and hope you find her soon.  I found a dog in the snow, curled up frozen under our van, and next day took him to the police station and kept him until he was claimed.  Called him Jan as found on January 1, very cold winter.  I had him and loved him for 14 years, he was never claimed but he had a good life with me.   If she is friendly lets hope someone is looking after her and that you find her soon.

That would be great BB if you could, how will I get a poster to you? ( I can post one if you pm me your addy) That site is a good 'un, they said they would ring me today and send me some laminated posters as well.

I ran out of ink for the printer yesterday, I have just printed some more off, so will take one up to Tesco tomorrow. They can be funny about putting things like that up. But I can ask.

Subway have all our details and will ring if they see her again.

I agree with you, I think someone has taken her in too. I just wish they would ring and tell us that she's safe and well. Even if they said you're not having her back........it's the not knowing how or where she is that's painful.

More than a few years ago a cattery lost my cat, posters, phone calls, no reply, lost hope.....9 months later I got a phone call, he'd turned up at a local ladies house 150m from where he'd been lost. She mentioned him in the local pub and someone remembered our lost cat. This was an amazing thing especially as he was really nervous of strangers and would have been almost impossible to rehome if he'd been given to a charity. Soppy date if he knew you though. We picked him up and the cat she'd locked in a stable to stop him running off again went straight to me and got a big cuddle. Poor thing had servere worms and a chest infection but he was back.

Don't give up, good things happen and hopefully it will be you and Maggie in the papers soon.

Star, if you have any connections, no matter how weak, use your local papers to see if they will do a small story, use the other dog pining as a reason. needing meds, anything..anything to grab the interest of a reporter, you need to start upping the coverage if you can and  you might just get lucky, if they do it it will flood the area with a picture etc. Don't presume it is not important enough, it might just be... try..ask for help for the sake of the other dog.

They may say they get asked too often but try it..they would get a lot of  street cred if they found her for you.

Still cheering you on here.

I rang our local radio station again this week, they have aired Maggie's plight twice now over the last couple of weeks. But nothing today, possibly they want new stuff.

Our local paper won't do an article on lost or missing pets, they might do if it were stolen. But the free paper said if they had room in the editorials they would put it in next week, he asked me to email him a pic. So fingers crossed it goes in.

I have posters waiting to go to Mereway, I have been waiting for some laminated ones promised by a lost pets site. I have waited for 2 days now, so I'll put mine up tomorrow.

My daughters are coming up on Sat, to have another search....4 of us can cover much more area. I'm a bit useless on my own. Arthritic feet, which slow me down and become extremely painful.

Can I send you a couple of posters BB?

Star, all this running around , posters, printing ink, ads in papers must be getting expensive,,I would like to help with a few bucks..I can't go out there looking and I want to help. PM me your home e mail and I can send you a wee bit via Paypal..it will make me feel better. It comes out of our "givings budget" so Maggie can have a bit,, the lesser pink and purple spotted earth worms have had enough ;D

Star, have you thought of sending us posters, in different parts of the country, well outside of your area to put up.  You never know Maggie might not still be in your area as dreadful as that sounds.

But, maybe the bigger the area you can cover the better the search for her.

I know it's a long shot but anything is worth a try.

You can certainly send me some posters by email if you like and I'll print them off and put them up round here.

I am completely overwhelmed with the generosity shown.....Jeanine I can't believe you would do that for our little Maggie. I don't know what to say, except thank you....so much.

Sinbad....I will send you a poster in an email.......thank you for offering. It is quite possible she could be anywhere.

I am going now, I can't see the keyboard. I'll pm you Jeanine later today xxx

I know just how you feel, our cat Jango has been missing since Monday. I have been around the block asking neighbours to check their sheds etc and leaving notes for those I didn't get to speak to. I've phoned all the nearby vets, phoned the animal centre we got him from, phoned the micochip number and let them know he's missing, even phoned the council clean up crew... :'(

Posted him here too, find out if there are any sites for you area that do this for dogs ;)

This is a small tangent but I think that Jeannine must be one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever been in contact with! It is a privilege to know that people with such big hearts still exist. As we say in Oz, Good on ya!

Star, I keep hoping to see a post that says you have found your pup. I wish you the best in finding her. My cat decided to "holiday" in the neighbour's flat for 2 days this winter and I was beside myself, wondering where she could have gone.  So I fully sympathise. If she has not been picked up by now from some "official channel" (pound etc) I think she has obviously been taken in by someone. And they may either have not seen the posters etc or perhaps they like her a lot? In which case at least she is being taken care of. I  do hope you find her eventually.

Antipodes, my sentiments entirely. I have been a member of these boards for many years, I know many extremely kind people in real life but Jeannines genorosity is incredible, what an amazingly kind thoughtful and generous lady you are Jeannine, your thoughtfulness never ceases to exhaust me, you are a remarkable lady!

Star I truly hope you  become reunited with your dog, I am in Cheshire but if you would like me to display posters then I would be more than welcome to help you and truly hope that you are able to reunite with your pet very soon x

Jeannine.........thank you  :-* :-* :-*

What a day yesterday........in the afternoon I had another hoax call. Traveled a 30 mile round trip. The brainless morons, I hope it satisfied their needs >:(

Then at 7 - ish a lady rang to say a dog answering Maggie's description was playing with their dog. They went back out after seeing our poster and looked for an hour, taking a spare lead and treats. No signs. I took my friend out there as soon as the lady rang she showed us where Maggie was seen and we spent 3 hours hunting.

Lots of woodland and a huge golf course and meadows. Very beautiful. But still no sign. Sally (Litter sister) seemed to pick up a scent but lost it. Looking on the map she is getting closer,if it is her, but bless her its taken 2 days short of a month for her to cover 5 miles.

Sinbad....the email I sent you failed. I can still send one by snail mail. I know it seems daft if the dog seen around here is Maggie. But you never know. I will wait to hear from you.

I'm tired and my ankle is complaining bitterly, so I am taking a couple of hours off to rest. This mornings hunt was also fruitless.

My heart goes out to you hun and i will have a look around the rescue centres down here in Dorset just incase and send a picture to the lady who runs pound pup rescue as she goes to the 4 Welsh pounds once a week so she will keep an eye open there for you hun.

Sinbad.....Thank you for postering hunny, and also adding Maggie to your Facebook too  :-* x

Manics.......And your Facebook! Thanks so much......this is getting the word out so much better than I can on my own!  :-* x

You're all marvelous guys :).

I have just got back from another search, a mum rang saying her 10 year old daughter saw a black dog this morning. It could be any dog, but I have got to check it out.

Unfortunately the Landy's clutch has gone so I have to rely on friends to pick me up this week. Their help is invaluable, although it wastes a good half hour before I get collected and then make our way to the wherever we need to go to.

I'm not complaining, its all just very frustrating. I need to eat, I need to sleep and I need to stop crying. You would think I would have done that after a month.........stopped crying.

I'll stop with the drama queen stuff now.

Huge hugs to you all for doing what you have all done.

Just got back from a camping holiday and was desperate to see if Maggie had been found yet.
I do a voluntary collection and delivery of bedding, food and toys to our local dog pound, so will take Maggies picture up there on Sunday and have a look at all the dogs that are in the pound at the moment.
Will start scouring rescue centres in the South and will try and get Maggies picture on our Motorhome Forum as we have people all over the country travelling around. Most are dog owners and very caring so it's worth a try.
Don't give up hope and give her little sister a big hug from me. x

A good friend took me out to put more posters uplast night after she finished work, we covered 2 villages and a huge industrial estate. We dont seem to have made much impression on the indtrial site its so big.

I posted 20 plus more posters to vets in Northamptonshire, one receptionist said it was good to extend the info. A few months ago they had a pup in, it was picked up in a market town miles away and these 'new owners' took the puppy to another town for treatment....to avoid recognition . The vet picked  up on it and the pup was returned to its rightful owner.

I do wish I could feel more positive, just a little demoralised today. I guess its because my energy levels are so low.

Again everyone who has posted on Facebook and put posters up.........thank you  :-*

Star - Have there been any sightings of her?  If so the best time is to go out in the night when everything is quieter and your voice will carry further.  I would go to the place either you think she jumped out if you haven't any sightings of her or in the vicinity of where the last sighting was.

Poor you and poor maggie - but I have a feeling that we are going to have a happy outcome and soon!

Talking like that you may think I am a clairvoyant - but is it something that you could look into if there is a good one near you.  Sometimes they can help by pointing you in the right general direction.

I am hoping and hoping for you and your lovely Maggie.

Best wishes

Hi Ann...

You are right about going back to places you mention. We do keep going back to where Maggie got out, and the last sighting area. The last sighting was over a week ago.

I hope you're right abut her being home soon, I have a few friends who do similar things to clairvoyancy, they tell me Maggie is not on her own, and being looked after. But not necessarily round here, too many people know and the amount of decent people there are.....someone would have 'shopped' the new owner by now.

I keep postering further and further afield, and have had calls from genuine people saying they've seen a black dog.......only its male, or a Staffie, or got white toes, docked tail.....you get the picture. At least they are bothering to ring. So the posters are working.

I have put another lost ad in the paper, I get the other car to loan tomorrow, its a pity its not tonight. I could do with a break though, so its a blessing in one way I suppose.

Cheers Cornykev....

Thank you guys xxx

Yes hunny, I feel the same way. Its hard waiting though isn't it, that's why I keep looking and postering. I can't do nothing, because, bless that little girl, if she's making her own way back, she really has got her work cut out. xxx

Hi Macmac......it's difficult to know what's happening really. If someone does have her, I wish they would ring. Even it's to say....and you're not having her back, she's safe....it's the not knowing that's the worst thing.

A friend's cat was killed on the road yesterday, she's taking it very badly, but she said she at least knows what's happened and has closure. Now she is dealing with her grief.

Today I spoke to a fellow allotment holder.

Her son's dog went missing, it was chipped.

The dog turned up 200 miles away.

It seems that the dog after getting lost, attached it'self to a party who thought that they would adopt it and took it home. Then when they got home they thought again. So put the dog into a pound.

Not only did her son have to drive to get the dog back, he had to pay £200 to that local council for retrieving a stray.

Now I know Star would pay that to get his baby back as would we all. The point is that there must be loads of 'kindly' people who will take on a stray, then think again later.

I think Star's beautiful baby has been adopted by a loving family and since the dog cannot speak. She has had to settle in to their family rules. Now a member of their pack.

Otherwise any chipped animal found would have been reported back to the owner.

They only check chips when the animal is  'found'.

So, the new owner could simply call the dog theirs.

A beautiful dog with new and kind people, possibly thinking that 'it was meant to be'.

Vets will check micro chips but again if the current owner says that they have bought the dog, what does the vet do?

Vets are there to look after the animal, not research a dog's history.

Title: Re: Our little girl is missing
Post by: star on July 09, 2010, 08:55:49
I know what you're saying PH, Ive heard of a few cases where dogs have been returned to the owners after 18 months, 2 years. Because the 'new owner' had taken the dog to  a vet, thinking it was safe to do so after such a long time.

The vets, do scan for chips, if a dog is sold then then relevant phone calls and changes are made to the chip at the time of sale. They do have means of checking and they do check the missing pets register, its a bit like us and dentists I guess. We can be tracked through our teeth.

I can understand folk doing what they think is right, but only after all efforts have been made to find where the dog is from.

Thank you for your input PH, I keep my hopes up......there are posters up all over parts of the country (thanks to our members) all I can do is hope and pray she is safe and being cared for.

Thankyou so much Manouche, anything and everything people do means so much. I have been busy still postering over the weekend, plus helping feed hubby with tea and food while he mended the Landy.

Im getting more printing done as I type, to do some more this morning.

A lady rang this morning asking if we had found Maggie yet, I guess when posters have been up for longer than a month, people presume the dog / cat would have been found.

There have been no more sightings for a while, although there was a voicemail to hubby's phone saying this bloke 'John' thought he might have our dog, it was a male chocolate lab, but answered to Maggie.  ???

Its funny in a very sad kind of way..........we just want a proper call.

Do you know, its so hard to put yourself in a position where someones child may have gone missing....like little Madeline. There's a huge difference of course, as she's a child and daughter.

Maggie is part of our family. Its the 'not knowing', it makes you stuck somehow.

Title: Re: Our little girl is missing
Post by: betula on July 12, 2010, 11:36:24
Yes the not knowing must be awful.

A strange cat who seemed hungry come into our area yesterday, everyone made a fuss of it and fed it and it was a bit on the thin side so we all thought it must be lost.

I was about to ring cat rescue and look on the internet for lost cats and when it was so affectionate I had a thought that maybe I could take it in even if it meant a problem with the dogs when it's owner from the far side of the close appeared.

Beleave me it was so close to being rehomed........this may have happened to Maggie. She may at this time be living the life of a queen while we all worry ourselves.

I really hope you have some good news soon.

So sorry Star no new arrivals like Maggie, sorry to give you this news.
The lady at the rescue did tell me that not all counties check for chips which is really bad practice.
She did say that lots of dogs are found many miles away or even on your doorstep in the next county, so don't give up hope.
I shall check on a regular basis here in Portsmouth until we hear good news.  xxx

I spoke to a chap from 'Highways' and asked him what happened if a dog was 'found' after being run over and killed.

Apparently, no one checks for a microchip. Their job is to keep the roads clear, so as not to endanger traffic.

After all this time there are now two options. Either some one has found and adopted her and is so in love with her that they will not risk losing her or the worst has happened.

Either way, you have lost your little girl.

The not knowing is the hardest of course. Children, Grown ups and animals go missing all the time, it is terrible when it happens to our own.

Perhaps we could make a positive out of this and try to get a service going where we can ask that dead dogs are checked for microchips so that owners can be informed. It could be a complicated and difficult thing to do. Most charities such as the RSPCA are there for living creatures.

Personally, I do subscribe to the RSPCA. Would I subscribe to a charity which is in place just to inform pet owners 'your pet is dead'?  I can not say that I would but I do think that the people who do the 'chipping' might include a discoverers reward. It may cost more to register the dog, to make a deposit for a reward, reclaimable/refundable if the dog dies naturally or has to be destroyed.

It is in place  for only when dog's (or other animal's) corpse is found, the finder receives a fee from the dog owner, for their peace of mind.  The 'chip readers' cost money. Bin men would need to know that their investment was worthwhile. Because, they would have to invest in the readers so that they could claim that reward.

Dead dogs are not treated with respect, only humans are, so the corpse of any animal simply goes to the tip. No one bothers to identify them.

My daughter lost her cat some years ago and is still concerned about what happened to her.

I spoke to a lady, many years ago who told me that she had left her pram outside the temporary registry office, then went in, up the stairs to register to baby's birth in 1943. her baby was not there when she returned.

Madeline McCann comes to mind at this stage. Ben whose family were on a Greek Island some years ago. He went missing too.

When I was in Egypt they told me that during the Egypt/ Israeli war there were children found who were taken  in  as members of families. Seemingly they would have been left to die

Again we know that in Germany and other areas during the Nazi times people took in Jewish children as their own.

There are a lot of kind people about who will take in stray humans and animals.

I took in a dog. I still think that some one misses him to bits but even though I legally own him I would love to tell the person

Your baby is loved to bits and is happy. I am sure they must care (he is well trained) It had to be that he was loved............

I was so upset by this post, that I went to see my neighbour at the back and said Dulce (cat) (was here, and should I spray him with a water pistol so he went home.  She said she had seen him for 15 mins this morning but please DO NOT FEED HIM.  Guilty as charged.  Dulce has now disappeared, but she knows where I live, at the end of her house, b...dy h.ll, her house was so clean with two children, mine is a mess.  Maybe that is why Dulce likes it here.  Cut down my rose and grape vine which was going into her 'perfect' garden and she was very grateful, and I said anytime you want your cat just knock on my door. After him being sprayed with the water pistol he has disappeared but hasn't gone home, just next door or along the road.  The other twin cat was asleep in her garden so perhaps two male cats, twins, even if they have been neutered, don't want to live together.  It is all quiet here, but Charlie, my 18 year old cat, is missing his friend.  HELP.

Star, hang in there, we all know of stories about dogs that are found months later and I bet all those worried owners came to the point that you are.

When all this first started I reminded you to keep checking for the department that is responsible for animals found on the road. They may not check chips but they do keep records, of she had been found that way I think you would know.

Take care, don't lose hope, but do try to take comfort from the fact that she has obviously found a home, she is probably fine, she is  behaving herself or they would have moved her on, the hard part is that although she is fine and the new owners are fine, you are not, so please look after you and let time take it's course, I still think she will surface,

Hang in there, we are all still hanging in there with you.

I am keeping positive. I have to, for me there's no other way, to submit to thinking the worst is to give up....and I aint about to do that!! I have my down times....of which are many....but that's just being human with our human logic and emotions.

This morning there was a phone call at 7.30. A lady heard on Northants radio that a milkman picked up a black Lab. Their offices dont open till 9, so Im waiting for a call back.

A butcher rang as well asking if Maggie was still missing, as he has a poster up in his shop. He was lovely and will keep it there and will tell the locals to keep looking. It was the locals who asked about her. Villagers are fantastic :-*!

Re PH's post.......I have over the weeks rung the council asking if they have found any dogs that had been hit on the roads. Our councils policy is to scan every domestic animal they find and get in touch with the owner.

Even though I keep as upbeat as I can, sometimes these awful thoughts do creep in. Grrr I banish them and get on with positive thinking. You guys have helped so much with positive feedback and posters and watching found dog sites (there are so many sites, I cant possibly cover all of them).

When I need a boost I come on here, mostly when Im low.......because I know when I read reply posts you all lift me up again.

I have never had so much support from people Ive never met....you're all fantastic xxxx

Maggie will be coming home!!                                                    C'mon radio Northants, RING!!

I made the call and got through. The milkman.......now known as Mark....was lovely he rang me back twice with the man's addy he left the dog with. I went over, the old man said his dog wouldn't get on with the Lab. So he left the Lab in the garden, the Lab promptly jumped the fence and chased after the Mark the milkman's delivery van again. Unknown to Mark.

The old man watched helpless as the dog turned its attention to a woman walking her dog and tried to make friends there. After that he lost sight.

I have put several posters up in the village, everyone knows each other......its so small there's no shop or PO. Just a pub and houses.......typical English village. Very pretty.

A lady rang just as I got home, one who I'd spoken to in the village, she said the description matches Maggie. But....and its a big but, this dog is said to be between 9 months and a year. So I actually don't think its her, also its extremely friendly. Maggie is timid, but who knows? After time on her own (if its her) she may be craving company and she does look younger than her years.....a bit like me.... ::)humph!

In any case, all sightings have to followed up, 7 weeks is a long time and a dog can travel a very long way.  I also saw some council workers, I gave them a poster to put in their office. They work for Daventry council and sometimesthey scan for chips at the depot. Its a pity there's not a policy across the board for all councils to the same.

I think if the Jesters law could be enforced that would be a good start. The site wasn't active when I looked.....I mentioned that in another post. I will try again.

Jeannine I hope you get some sleep...........xxx

Thanks for all the ongoing and new support xxx

psssst guys........she tells me off for being up late. Hehehe I think Jeannine isthe queen of 'late'!! ;D

Oh what a shame.. but Star, she will have learned some street cred over the weeks, she has probably found that being friendly is not so scary after all and might have got quite good at it. I notice on the picture she is not a heavy looking lab, that might account for them estimating her as a young dog, so on the basis of those things I wouldn't discount the possibility.

Thank you all.........

Its been a difficult weekend, On Friday evening when we were taking Sally for a walk and saw a woman with a dog.....exactly like Maggie. It was a male, but nevertheless, he was a nervous type, he held his ears and body just the same as her. It was so hard walking past them, it has upset me dreadfully the last couple of days.

The milkman got in touch to say the dog he found belonged to someone in the village.

Im just having a down day, but Im ok really......xxx

I haven't been online for a couple of days, a couple of vets have rung to see wether we have found Maggie. As she is still missing they are happy to keep the posters up for us.

Everyone's being so lovely and understanding when I'm out. That's really difficult sometimes when it's in person.......you don't seem to get over one person's upset

(yes they are genuinely upset and I feel like I'm comforting them. I get all the comfort and support I need from you guys. It's easier here, because we're not face to face)

when you bump into someone else........It's wonderful really, just a little overwhelming. I'm ok again now. I've had a couple of days for me, I was just sharing my thoughts......I hope no one thinks I'm being ungrateful for concern shown by the public when I'm out. Far from it, it has renewed my faith in human nature.  I just needed a break from compassion............and crying in front of strangers.

There is no news of Maggie, the odd phonecall of someone asking if she had any brown on her, or what colour was the collar, or how many white toes?

We are still keeping our hopes up. No news is......hopefully good news.

Love Sue xxx

I have the same feeling as you guys, that Maggie is asleep on a comfy sofa somewhere and she is fine. I do believe that she will come home too............its this inbetween bit that's hard to deal with.

Her sister is Sally, she was terrible for the first 2 -3 weeks, wouldn't eat, always looking and whining........the way dogs are. She was ok after the 3rd week. I guess they (animals) have to be like that to survive, they have to get back on track quickly or suffer the consequences.

Its good though, because Sally reminds us there's other things in life that are still important. Ive been to see my daughter and grandchildren a lot lately........more than usual. I also need to look after myself. I have been so tired, I could actually go to bed now.

Hi Star... Yes you must look after yourself and rest if you can when you feel tired.
It's all to do with feeling anxiety and you have felt that for quite a few weeks now.
Whether this is for a human loved one or a beloved animal it's still the same, we all feel this grief and feel lost when we can do nothing to change the cicumstances we find ourselves in.
Take a rest and feel strong again. We are just lighting a candle for you Star on our kitchen windowsill andl wish you a peaceful sleep tonight. Lynn and Rick xxx
