Title: Yipee No more frosts after Tuesday
Post by: landimad on May 15, 2010, 20:21:17
Sort out the Half hardies and tender plants, get them ready for the big growing season in the ground. Pot on what you can and get the rest into whatever you can grow stuff in.
The race is on now and wont stop until the next later this year.
Good luck all in what you grow and who it is for, be it show or the table.

Heard a whisper from the fairies down the woods as the teddy bears picnic was going on.

Surprised they had time to whisper landimad, they've been busy prising open my hawthorn buds down here  ;D

Bean and sweetcorn plants up to the plot tomorrow  ;)

Hi all,

I think theres a full moon on the 27th May which, if there is a clear sky,  is a high risk time for a frost. I would earth up spuds and protect all new growth until that has passed.

What is the link between the moon and frost?

There's definitely a link between clear nights and frost!

There is, so if you can see the moon (full or otherwise) a frost is more likely, but there is no correlation between the phase of the moon and whether or not the sky is clear.

Well,
I have not seen another frost since the start of this post, but you all may have had the odd one further north from me here in the south midlands.

Many years ago we had a frost on about 6th June a lot of people lost their runner beans and there was such a rush on fresh seed that you could not buy seeds anywhere.  Was living just south of Swindon at the time.  I do not know the last know date for frost but I bekeuve that it is surprisingly late.

We had one on June 16th some years ago. It didn't kill anything of mine but it knocked one end of a row of toms back badly. The other end was unaffected.
