Title: Can I re-cover a cheapo polytunnel?
Post by: Squash64 on March 15, 2010, 15:02:41
This is what my cheapo polytunnel looked like in June 08 when it was new

and this is it now!

It was brilliant for the first year, and not too bad last year but it's had its chips now.  Does anyone have any idea if I could re-cover it and how to do it?  The frame is strong.

Have you looked on eBay?  There were some replacement covers on recently (cost about £30).

Thesehttp://www.allplas.co.uk/acatalog/Ultra_Violet_Inhibited_Polythene_Sheeting.html (http://www.allplas.co.uk/acatalog/Ultra_Violet_Inhibited_Polythene_Sheeting.html) have clear and green tint UVA plastic that would be ideal and they were very helpful when i phoned.

I think it would be easier if you made a wooden door frame at the end, then the plastic around the sides could be tucked in neatly or use the clear tape/connectors they sell to join the ends and sides.
See the last picture on page two for the idea http://www.overthegardengate.net/UserPages/pp_view.asp?FName=polytunnel&Page=2 (http://www.overthegardengate.net/UserPages/pp_view.asp?FName=polytunnel&Page=2)

I have just made a home made green house and used monoflex sheeting from Scaffold Direct. Supposed to be guaranteed for ten years. You get plenty on the roll so you would be able to build yourself a bigger one.

That's a good idea, I need more places to grow squash.

Thanks Nilly and Jenny for the suggestions, I will measure up and look into those sites.

Amazingrotovator - is monoflex sheeting the same as the green debris netting?

Monoflex is a reinforced plastic.Have a look on the Scaffold Direct web site and it explains about the net and mono.

Squash,
If you want to do a proper job of it look at some of the Polytunnel manufacturers web sites, they sell all the components including the correct grade of 'Poly' for your tunnel, :)
