This is still current. (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,57122.120.html)

Averate rate for a 5-pole plot is somewhere between £3.88/pole and £5.39/pole and is most likely £4.64/pole, and if you get a ten pole plot the rate's about 20p/pole cheaper.

17 pole plot  £42 (£2.47/pole), but OAP concession £21 (£1.23/pole)

A pole is 30.25 square yards, and the standard allotment size is 17 poles. This plot size was arrived at centuries ago as it is considered enough land to grow enough veg for a family of four.

Todays useless fact:
An oxgang was viking measure used in the Doomsday Book, and was the area of land that an ox could plough in one season. Since oxen were usually used in teams of eight, the area that eight ox could plough was called a bovate, or carucate.

So an oxgang was about 15 acres, and a bovate was 100-120. Just to make it more awkward, parts if England not under Danelaw used the virgate, which was twice the size of an oxgang (because you used two ox instead of one), and a carucate was then known as a Hide.

Wonder if I could slip a few mentions of oxgangs, bovates, carucates and virgates into conversation with my friend while we walk the dogs in the park this morning?

Most research implies that these terms covered yeilds (?sp) for taxation purposes not modern measures of area... the "acre" was not a statute term and varied by @100% depending on the soil... smaller on heavy, rich soils, larger on light, poor soils...   :-X

I think mine was £25 for 1/2 a plot inc water, I've just extended it to 3/4 and rent is going up by 20% this year. I bet there is going to be a lot of upset people on our allotment.

Mine's a nominal 600 square yards (roughly 20 poles), and this year I paid £40 including Association membership for myself and wife. So that's a total £2/pole.

I currently pay 15 a year for about 10 poles on a faily basi site (we've got water troughs scattered through and legend tells of a site strimmer adn rotavator but I've never seen them) in Oxford...

Where I'm moving to in Swindon (and have my name down even before I've moved) 5 poles will cost me 19 a year .... on a similar site as far as I can tell.

As I work in oxford I'll be keeping the Oxford plot for at least another year (Our site doesn't have a waiting list, but the spare plots need as much breaking in as mine did :D...

I pay £20.00 a year they tried to put it up this year to £40.00
but apparently they have to give twelve months notice before it can go up.
So next year it will be £40.00............ ::)

Hi - Can someone please help me with a couple of calculations?

I've got two plots, which I know the metre size of, and I'm trying to calculate the poles.

Are these correct?

1.  4.5m x 20m = 90 m2 = 2.95 poles

2.  6m x 17m = 102 m2 = 3.35 poles

No.  1 pole == 25 m2, so:

1. 90 m2 == 3.6 poles because 90/25 == 3.6

2. 102 m2 == 4.1 poles because 102/25 == 4.1

I was being rough on the calculations. A pole is 30.25 square yards or 25.3  sqm.

You'll get your wrist slapped by the admin for points scoring if ur not careful, i did when i corrected people  :D

Oh...mine are (2) 40 poles together with a cost of whole £7.00 that's £3.50 a year per plot.
They are not council allotments though...and I have purchased the the plots for one off payment £25 each..but after that just £3.50 as a membership fee;D
If and when I decide to stop doing them I get the value (£25/each)back!! ;D ;D...but for me its lifetime commitment, if body can keep up..

It's likely that you're obliged to give some period of notice to quit, maybe 12 months, and if the agreement says nothing the common-law default is 6 months, and you can only quit on the rent day.  I've never heard of a council insisting that the tenant work the plot for their notice period, but it does mean that they don't have to give you any money back when you leave early.

Our plots are tiny 5 x 12m (2.5 poles is that right?).  £36/year.  Feel envious of plots where you have room for sheds, seating, ponds etc but it's better than nothing.

Mines a half plot (27ft by 50ft) just outside norwich
Rent is £12.50 a year. Water, a key and a carpark is included but nothing else.
A refundable £25 fee is needed when taking a plot on and returned when returning a plot if no major clearance work is needed.
I think its more than reasonable! :)

Yes, at £15/pole that's very expensive.  Here's a comparison of the rents (for a ten pole plot) in boroughs around Newbury, so you can see that £15/pole is more than twice as expensive as the most expensive (which is Newbury  ;) ).

Yes it seems that our allotments are expensive!  They are not private but they are run by our own association which took them over from the town council 3 years ago.  I think the association charges the same rent the council did.  The water's free.... ::)

For a 1/16 acre plot with water 1st and 2nd  year was £25 with a huge free delivery of the soil conditioner the council make ( bit of a free for all and never managed to nab any)

rent went up to £35 in nov and will rise to £45 next november..no more free condition but least the paths are being redone

Still a bargain I reckon
