Title: Yucca, or why I don't do houseplants
Post by: FennelandFern on January 28, 2010, 23:01:45
Hello chaps.
We have a yucca in our sitting room which we've had for a year now. I really don't like houseplants - I always kill them, and don't care what that says about me as a gardener!
Anyway, this Yucca has been fine but over the past month quite a lot of the leaves at the bottom of each growing stem have been yellowing. The newest leaves look fine and there is new growth. I only water when the soil feels dry as my chief method of killing houseplants is to drown the blighters. Is this normal for yuccas? As I said, I'm not really a fan of growing stuff inside - have only really had success with a massive hoya which is now sprawling around the kitchen and is very pretty - so am asking real stupid questions here!

Thanks for the help I know I'll get from lovely A4A people!

Isabel

According to my book it means the compost is too wet/over-watering. Also listed as a third option is sudden drop in temperature.
I always kill houseplants too.  ???

plant it outside, they are as tough as old boots!!
(current problem sounds like a lack of light) ;)

Sudden drop in temp is a possibility, as is the fact it is in our sitting room where we often forget to open the curtains  :-[

Our house is freeeezing during the winter, so hopefully now the temps are starting to pick up, it will perk up a bit. And I'll hold off the watering too  :-\

Veg are so much easier than houseplants!

Another vote with Tony.
We have two outside, and they survive every element, but as you stated do like well drained soil.
I don't have any houseplants for same reason.
