my daughter doesn't like potatoes (!) I'm thinking of growing waxy, yellow fleshed salad pots to try her on, as have tried, mashed, roasted, boiled, etc. Any suggestions for the very tastiest of this type?

Ha!! I have a daughter of the same ilk ::). She will only eat pasta and rice though. I particularly like yellow waxy potatoes but haven't managed to find any as yet, so I'm glad you asked reddyreddy.

here,s a few...Charlotte, PFA, Nicola, International Kidney,Rattle, Anya and Rosabella....there are loads more..this covers 1st & 2nd earlies and Main crop.. :)

Is your daughter a child or adult?
Is it the flavour she doesn't like, or potatoes as they are "boring"? because if so, she is unlikely to like waxy pots either...
I ask, as one can now buy tubers of Highland Burgandy Red and Salad Blue. They are NOT waxy, but very floury and are RED or BLUE all the way through - so produce great red or blue mash potato... I think its quite tasty too ;D great for adults who are kids are heart... ::) they are totally natural and are very old varieties.
See if she'll grow and look after them, and whether it will encourage her to eat them! They have lovely flowers
obviously, one can add other things to mash potato - cabbage, onions, garlic, leeks, carrots, swede, etc, which can change the flavour... if its the flavour she doesn't like

Exquisa and Pink Fir Apple potatoes are my favourites.

I tried Anya last season, but they weren't waxy in the slightest. Could the conditions ie. dry weather etc. make a difference? I am trying Charlotte this time.
Which spuds have you tried reddyreddy? I also like earthy tastering pots., any recommendations please?

try growing anyas, they are a really sweet nutty early pot - my grandaughter mainlines on them!

Nice idea, thanks will definately try both of those, although mash is her least favourite, possibly the texture - BTW she is 5. She'd love to grow some herself and she was good last year sowing seeds etc.

I've tried zillions of potato types but just from a personal point of view I know my favourite potato is a yellow waxy salad potato, no particular variety as I've never grown them - don't know why?!! This year it'll feature highly! Any views on belle de fontanay?

I like Anya. I steam them and find that it is almost impossible to overcook them (helpful if I have a Senior Moment and forget I'm cooking them)
They stay nice and firm and have a lovely flavour.

Charlotte is one of the "standards". Pink Fir Apple, of course - although it's very late. I love Roseval, but it's very difficult to get hold of. Belle de Fontenay is good, but doesn't yield as much as Charlotte; Ratte is even tastier, but even smaller in yield.
But then different potatoes like different soils anyway. This is my experience on London clay.
If it's the texture she objects to - 5-year olds can be fussy eaters! - PFA have a very firm, almost un-potatoey texture. Or try cooking them in different ways: wedges? roast in goose fat, so that they're really crisp? (My grand-daughters love them like that.) potato pancakes? (I think they call these rosti nowadays.) potato salad? And certainly get her to help you plant them. And dig them up of course!!
Or buy a pasta machine....?

pasta and rice are her staple carbs already! She will eat them as chips (of course), rosti or very small roast potatoes - so there is barely any fluffy potato left! Will research some of the suggested varieties, especially pfa which I've always wanted to try. Thanks all!

Nicola , yellow fleshed waxy potato, I grow it every year, pests etc don't touch them.Fantastic with just a thingy of butter and eaten out the saucepan ;D
Even Sarah Raven thinks its fab, it's included in her new catalogue as a top favourite ;) / shades x

Very much enjoyed Moulin Rouge this/last year, red skin and tasty waxy flesh. I second Anya very scrummy, Bella De Fontanay I'm afraid is still on my to grow list!

Absolutely .... if I had a kid that didn't like roast PFA I'd dump them off on the council and try again, some people aren't worth the effort :D....

Remember, the above two are not waxy, but are fun! You'll prob need to experiment with mixing with other foods to change the texture, as you say this is what she dislikes!

Thanks Chris, that would be ideal as I wouldn't really want more than 2 or 3 of those two. I already showed both my girls (3&5) the red and blue potatoes and they said they wanted to grow them themselves! I have two empty black bins so they can have one each and a blue and a red potato each to grow! Perfect!! ;D

I can recommend Juliet - grew them last year and will grow again this year. Fantastic taste ;D

I suspect if you give your children their own growing area the problem might heal itself. I did this with kids in school a few years ago, the gentle rule was" if you grow it, you eat it". We had non veggie kids eating all sorts of stuff, the really fun thing was listening to them verbally selling the idea of their veg to another kid who wasn't keen. Priceless..
Still say Charlotte, supposed to be second early but we grew it as a first and then left some to grow om, they actually grew quite large.
When you get your kids spud hooked don't forget the old wisdom" you can eat as many as you like,but you scrape your own".

Charlotte are excellent if they last, but last year they were the first to get blight, and succumbed in a few days. It's happened several years in a row so I'm looking for more resistant varieties this year.

Last year we were given some Blue Moon(blue/purple skinned) at the Whitchurch Potato Day to try out.
They were stunning and we've kept 20 or so back to grow again this year.
The taste was brilliant and they didn't fall apart even when my OH boiled them on full heat(plonker..)
Have tried to get more commercially, but they are still on trial.

I am a very fussy potato eater and really only like Desiree roast or baked. Hate mash or new potatoes and certainly do not like them boiled. My favourite way is roast with either herbs or chillie flakes sprinkled on. I zap them in the microwave with a spray of oil until they are cooked and then either put in the oven or pan to brown with a bit of butter and herbs. Anya and PFA are ok. King Ed, Red Duke of York and Charlotte passable.
Hate the metallic taste that many potatoes have. I particularly hate any of the pentland ones.

Just a suggestion but why not make Gnocchi out of them. They'll be something new, a different texture and you can cover them in a variety of sauces so that it looks like a pasta dish. I know...I sometimes have to tell a little white lie to my 4 year old to get her to eat her veg.
